Jul 23 Written by:kim_danoff Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Q: I have a ten year old male neutered cat that was a rescue kitty. He is a great cat but in the last couple of weeks he has stopped using his litter box consistently and is defecating and urinating in strange places.
I did buy a new litter box over a month ago, but have not changed brand of litter or food. He has also stopped eating his food and is eating our dog’s food (it is an all natural Iams brand; I bought him the same kind for cats). He isn't acting ill or his fur doesn't look dull. Nothing else in his environment has changed. I do have an appointment to take him to the vet next week, but any suggestions in the meantime? He gets along great with our dogs. In fact, we call him our "cog" because he acts more like a dog. He is very social and well mannered otherwise. A: I think taking your cat to the vet for a thorough medical work-up is in order. I would speak to your veterinarian about bloodwork, a urinalysis, and possibly some x-rays to evaluate abdomen and bladder. Many cats get crystals or stones in their bladders and when they do, a lot of cats will start to go outside the litter box-sometimes urine, sometimes feces, and sometimes both. It depends on the cat. Your vet will need to do an exam before prescribing something because what to do depends upon the diagnosis. Write back after seeing your vet. Good luck. Tags: 2 comments so far...
Re: Cat Box Problems
Cats should not be allowed to eat dog food. Dog food does not contain taurine which is essential to a cat's health. Without it, cats can go blind. Please assure your kitty eats the appropriate food that has been formulated for cats.

Re: Cat Box Problems
I have a rescued cat that has been urinating outside the box since i got him. It is much less frequent now. but I asked questions about it here a couple months ago and got about 33 responses. Most were very helpful. So if you have the time look back in the blogs i think it was the end of may beginning of june. It does sound more like a bladder problem to me. I did most the tests on my cat and he just all of a sudden changed. crazy cats.
best of luck to ya
