Beagle Back ProblemsQ: I have a beagle who I put Hartz Flea and Tick medication on. She had a severe reaction and we went to the vet. He did x-rays and said the medicine had caused her to jerk so that her back and disc became inflamed.

He gave her four kinds of meds, but after three weeks she can hardly walk and is great pain. What should I do? Take her back? Get more medication? She is really suffering, except when she has a muscle relaxant.

A: If this is due to a disc and she is in that much pain, I do recommend returning to your veterinarian and discuss taking some x-rays and possibly having an MRI performed. You should also consider physical therapy for animals. This is similar to what might be done for humans and can do wonders for relieving pain in many instances.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

i would also like to suggest that you look into the possibility of a Vetrinary Clinic at a University near you! While im sure that most Vets in private practice are fine and caring individuals, a University run Clinic usually has the very latest equipment and information available....I wish you and your pup all the best and a speedy recovery!

Re: Beagle Back Problems

I, too, have a beagle that has an inflamed disc occasionally. I'm luck enough that the medication the vets give her works so well. She just hurt her back again this past weekend and is on Dexamethasone (spelling?) I wish your beagle lots of luck, may she be feeling better soon.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

My beagle is 11 now, he used to jump down from the bed and one time he jumped out of the car before I could get him and lift him down and I think that's when it happneed, after thathe was yelping when he moved, so I took him to the vet, he had xrays and turns out he has two ruptured discs in the lumbar vertebrae, he was first on dexamethasone and then went to rimadyl now he is on another anti inflamatory meloxicam, he is doing very well, it seems to be common in beagles, since this i have spoken to other beagle owners who have had similar issues,

Re: Beagle Back Problems

When our dog, who has since gone onto Rainbow Bridge, had the same problem, she was on Metacam and that did wonders for her. I gave it to her everyday with her food and it really worked great. Take your pup back to the vet or the university clinic, don't let her suffer, they can do great things now for our best friends.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

There are also holistic vets who practice chiropractic on pets. If it works for people (and it does) then it should work for animals too. You can locate them by googling it.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

If he can barely walk after 3 weeks, better to have the MRI done and if surgery is necessary, have a board certified surgeon perform it. Don't waste any time. The longer you wait ,the more damage done and the less chance of him regaining full mobility.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

While not having a beagle with back problems, I did have a collie that benefited from Rimadyl. Anti-inflammatory and it worked for her. I did have a friend that was a physical therapist and she would do massages for my collie. They gave her some relief but the Rimadyl was the most affective.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

I've heard fabulous reports over the last year about the benefits of chiropractic assistance for our pets. This includes from vets who've also gained additional training in chiropractic practices in order to better take care of animals especially when general medical options were of no avail. I would not hesitate to use this for my "kids" should the need arise. I keep at the ready, two names and a clinic I can go to in my city. I wish you much success !

Re: Beagle Back Problems

HI! I have a Pomeranian with a torn ligament (ACL). The vet initially said that I needed to take her to have surgery in Columbus. The surgery was going to be $2000.00. I was told she may develope Arthritis as a result of the torn ligament. I am in school to become a Licensed Massage Therapist. I cannot afford that right now, but would come up with it if I have no other options. So I decided to try massage therapy on her, I do it everyday. With-in 2 weeks she began to put weight on her leg again and then a few weeks later she was running and jumping on it as if she was in no pain at all. Her diagnosis was 1 year ago, she went to the Vet last month and she does not have any Arthritis. Now, she still has a tear, but she is able to use it just fine and is in no pain. My point is that we should not discount the benefits of Massage as opposed to all those toxic chemicals (pain killers and anti-inflammatory's). Massage really does wonders. Massage is especially helpful with inflammation and swelling. I would check on the AMTA website to see if you can locate a Licensed Massage Therapist who specializes in Animal Massage or check with a local Massage Therapist to see if they could help. You would only need to take her once, I am sure that the Therapist would be more then happy to teach you what Massage Techniques to use on her daily so you can do the Massage yourself. It could really help her. Good Luck!

Re: Beagle Back Problems

Seek out a specialist - always get a 2nd opinion. An MRI and further xrays by a specialist would be worth its weight in gold and your beagle's health.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

Some vets use acupuncture now, which might be worth a try. Worked wonders on my herniated disc and accompanying sciatic pain. Good luck--that is a really tough and painful problem.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

if you are sure that the liquid that you put on your dog did this to him, i would be contacting the company from were i bouth this , because if your vet says thats what happend they need to run with the bills so your baby can get better, probably your baby is not the only one that suffer this, and this people have a bad product out there. we need to be care full with are babys and protec them since they can do it for them self. chuchi

Re: Beagle Back Problems

THERE HAS BEEN A WARNING OUT FOR YEARS ABOUT HARTZ FLEA & TICK MEDICATIONS FOR DOGS AND CATS. IT HAS KILLED MANY ANIMALS. WHY IT IS ALLOWED TO BE STILL SOLD IS A MYSTERY TO ME. FOR ALL OF YOU READING THIS "HARTZ KILLS". I TRULY HOPE YOUR DOG CAN RECOVER FROM THIS.

By Arkydoglover on  Friday, July 18, 2008

Re: Beagle Back Problems

I am surprised that your answer from the vet did not include information about the problems with Hartz Flea & Tick Meds.
It has been known for some time and I would contact the company also. Meanwhile, good luck and you might want to give massage therapy a try.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

I would get second opinion.
Never heard of medicine such as this causing a dog to jerk. Sounds silly.
Try some gentle deep massaging and some light swimming if possible.
I hope for dog this is only a temporary thing.
good luck.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

I work at a 24/7 animal hospital and although we strongly discourage using Hartz and others besides Frontline Plus, but theirs always people that call or come in because they bought some flea stuff at the dollar store or somewhere else and their pets having a reaction to it. Frontline Plus runs 14-17 bucks for one dose but it actually works, and most clinics probably over the 6 months plus 1 free deal through frontline Plus. Depending what state your in physical therapy or acupuncture may be offered at a vet clinic near you.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

Acupuncture! It works, it isn't a drug, there are no side affects. It helped Fang the Wonderdog immeasurably and I get "accurately punctured" once a month just to keep spinal stenosis at bay and am symptom free because of it. Much easier, less painful than injections in the spine!

Re: Beagle Back Problems

MY BOXER WAS HIT BY A CARE SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND REALLY INJURED HER BACK. SOMETIMES WHEN SHE RUNS ALOT, HER BACK LEGS GIVE OUT ON HER. I GIVE HER RIMADYL FROM MY VET AND IT HELPS THE PAIN ALOT. ALSO STEROIDS DO HELP WITH SWELLING. MAYBE THAT IS AN OPTION

Re: Beagle Back Problems

my beagle Joey - going to be 6 in september also has back problems. just this past april he pulled out his back and his neck was all swollen from the slipped disc. I had taken him to a specialist after being on meds for about 2 weeks. they wanted to do surgery for about $6000. - I looked into different options and spoke again to my vet. we tried laser therapy and I have to tell you within 2 weeks the swelling went down and about a 2 weeks after that he was off the meds. I watch him very carefully now that he doesn't jump up and down and also had special stairs made for him to get up and down off my bed.
I wish you the best of luck and ask your vet about laser therapy - just make sure they wet the area being treated so they don't burn his skin. I will keep your baby in my prayers.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

MY DOXIE SLIPPED A DISC AFTER BEING MEDS FOR A MONTH WITH LITTLE RELIEF I WAS BEING TOLD THEY COULD TRY SURGERY - THAN I WAS TOLD ABOUT A LOCAL CHIROPRACTOR, 2 SESSIONS + 1 FOR GOOD MEASURE SHE WAS BACK TO NORMAL! ALSO TRY ALOE VERA JUICE FROM ( FOREVER LIVING PRODUCTS ) - GREAT RESULTS FOR JOINT PAIN, ARTHRITIS & DIABETES ONCE I STARTED GIVING MY DIIABETIC DOG 4TLBS. JUICE A DAY SHE WENT FROM 13 UNITS OF INSULIN TO 7 UNITS AND STAYED REGULATED. BE' BE' WAS DIAGNOSED AT THE AGE OF 8 AND LIVED AN ADDITIONAL 8 YEARS AS A REGULATED DIABETIC DOG. AS A DISTRIBUTOR OF FOREVER LIVING ALOE VERA PRODUCTS I HAD MORE CUSTOMERS BUYING IT FOR THEIR DOGS THAN FOR THEMSELVES - TAKE IT FROM ME YOU REALLY WILL SEE RESULTS.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

My sister's dog just had back problems with a disc and was in terrible pain, yelping for 10 minutes every time she moved wrong, etc. She had to have surgery at a specialized veterinary center in Houston. It was expensive, but her dog fully recovered and has no back problems at all now. She was very pleased with the results of surgery, as there were no medications that helped her dog.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

Just a suggestion for future flea and tick problems. I used to use all of the commercial products for flea and tick supression with my dogs. I firmly believe this caused ( or at least contributed to) my first weimaraner's mast cell cancer. Since becoming a little more educated in natural approaches to this problem I have been using "Flea Free" flower essence for years with my Weims. I was skeptical at first but this flower essence has produced wonderful results for me. I have had no flea or tick problem since usng this product. A few drops in their food is all you need. You may also want to consider products with neem oil.

Re: Beagle Back Problems

I also would recommend taking your beagle back to the vet. I had a Scottie that had back problems from going to the groomer. They gave her chiropractic care, believe it or not, and you wouldn't even known she had problems after that. Before that she couldn't even stand up and when she came home, you wouldn't believe it was the same dog. I wouldn't recommend medication if its not helping her. Ask for some alternative medicine. Good luck!

Re: Beagle Back Problems

I hate to be the one to say this, but we had to have our Doxie put down because of back problems and the amount of pain she was having. Several years later, I developed back problems of my own and experienced that kind of pain! If you can't get your dog's pain relieved, please do the right thing. I belive your dog can be helped because there are wonderful new dugs and surgical techniques available today. My back was completely repaired and I wish the technology would have been available when our Doxie had her problem.

Good luck. Here is hoping for the best possible cure for your dog!

Re: Beagle Back Problems

Im sorry to hear about you baby's back injury. It's hard to tell if and what medications will or won't work; and what sid-affects they may cause for each animal reacts diffrently. Therapy is important but may I suggest a change in you begals diet as well. Here are some websites that sell all natural, organic and free of dangerous products you may not know your feeding your presious chid/children that certian commercial foods have. I have a cat that had a serious hip injury and arthritis do to the injury. I tried everything i knew to try to relieve him from the pain but nothing truly work for a long period of time. After changing his diet not only did he begin to show improvment with in two weeks his coat became shinnier, his pigment came back even brighter, he was doing things he han't done since he was a kitten. These websites also offer organic shampoos and dips that repel fleas and misqitios better then the products that contain dangerous chemicals. I used it and havent seen one flea on him ever since.
