| Jun 11 Written by:kim_danoff Wednesday, June 11, 2008 Q: I have a rescue puppy that is approximately five months old. When I rescued her earlier this year, she was already spayed. About a month later she developed a lime green vaginal discharge. Of course I took her to my vet with concerns that something was left inside of her during the spaying, but she did not feel this since the puppy was otherwise fine, eating and playful.
We started her on Clavimox which decreased the discharge and changed the color to clear. Once off of that the discharge increased and turned back to green so we tried another course of antibiotics and had the same result. She is again with this green discharge and I need advice as to what to do next. My vet wants to perform an internal exam to evaluate for any abnormalities, which I feel is the next least invasive intervention, but my concern is that this is persistent and never really goes away and I am worried about her becoming very sick. Can you advise me on what I should do next and have you ever seen this before? A: A green vaginal discharge is not normal. You want to make sure she does not have a pyometra (uterine infection). This is not common in spayed animals, but sometimes we will see what is called a “stump pyometra” meaning there is an infection in the uterine stump that is left behind after a spay. Any type of pyometra is considered an emergency and typically requires surgery to remove it and clean out the “pus” to prevent systemic infection. I recommend pursuing this further with your veterinarian, and consider having some x-rays and possibly an ultrasound. Tags: 26 comments so far...
Re: Spaying Side Effects
I'm sorry your having to deal with this with your new pet... I think the advice from Dr. Danoff is good advice, and I pray they quickly find through the x-rays or ultrasound what is the problem, and it can be remedied with you ending up with a happy, healthy puppy... May the Lord bless you and your baby, as you seek the care she needs!! Laura

Re: Spaying Side Effects
In addition to all of the above, make sure you supplement her diet with some probiotics. Some foods already contain them, but since they don't list the amount, I usually add a little more. You can get in capsules, which you can open and mix in with her food.

Re: Spaying Side Effects
Both vets are giving you good advice. This needs to be taken care of as quickly as possible. I took in a little stray feral cat that had an infection in her uterus. When I took her to the vet's for shots, spaying etc., the vet told me it was a good thing I had got her in when I did because the infection was very bad and was ready to seep into the rest of her abdomen. Which would have killed her in time. Made me very glad I managed to get her into the house when I did. So don't take chances. She looks like a real sweetheart.

Re: Spaying Side Effects
I'm a vet tech and we do see a lot of puppies get vaginitis. They'll have vaginal discharge that will clear up after antibiotics. Maybe they need to try a stronger antibiotic or longer course of it. And as far as pyometra goes... that can be easily diagnosed with a CBC and possibly an ultrasound. And being as though she's spayed that is very unlikely unless it is like the Dr above said...that it's in the uterine stump that's left behind. Just ask your vet to do a CBC and if that's normal maybe try a different antibiotic. If the problem isn't clearing up I'd go see a specialist.

Re: Spaying Side Effects
Good Luck....I would be voting for the internal exam and ultrasound and xray before surgery. But if surgery is needed then by all means go for it.

Your girl is so beautiful and you are wonderful for rescuing her. Please get her to the Vet as recommended. I recently went through the loss of a beloved pet ----------- the grief is so overwhelming. Do what you need to for her. Good luck.

Re: Spaying Side Effects
I have a lab puppy that I adopted from a shelter when she was 2 months old, where she was spayed. A couple weeks after I got her, I noticed the same green discharge and had to get her put on antibiotics, which helped, but my vet said it was the "stump pyometra". Something about when they spay them, there is a little too much skin left or something. Anyways, she is a year old now and doing great so hopefully your pup's will clear up too! Good luck, she is adorable!

Re: Spaying Side Effects
Thanks to all of you who responded with advice and prayers. She is doing well, we are watching her, I had her evaled by another vet and she strongly feels it is puppy vaginitis and she will grow out of it. So far so good, and of course I would do anything to save her life as any good parent would do. Thank you Dr for your advice and wonderful information.

Re: Spaying Side Effects
Hi, I have a puppy like this, I rescued, she is a Catahoula Cur, full bred. She is definately worth all the shots and check up visits, if you are unsure, try a third opinion, but soon. And I do agree with everyone, we would like to know the outcome. Have a blessed one.

Re: Spaying Side Effects
WOW I'm glad you posted this, My dog has had a green discharge since we had her spayed. I had called my vet about it many times and they would say that it was normal. I thought it was odd that they would say that but trusted them, hey they are the ones who know what they are talking about. Any way Thanks a lot, maybe I'll find a new vet!!
