| Apr 30 Written by:kim_danoff Wednesday, April 30, 2008 Q: My nine-year-old cat was just diagnosed with an enlarged heart and liver -- no liver disease. She also has a mass above her heart. I don't know if it's malignant, I wouldn't let them aspirate it with a needle. From her blood test the vet thinks the mass is cancer. She has no symptoms of any of these illnesses. Can you tell me if there's anything I can treat her with holistically?
A: We typically recommend a high protein, moderate fat, low carbohydrate diet-fresh, organic meats are preferred. And combine diet with supplementation including Poly-MVA (lipoic acid), fish oil, mushroom combinations (Maitake DMG, BRM4), and we are now using intravenous Vitamin C therapy. The goal is to support the immune system of the pet so that his/her own immune system can fight the cancer. There are times when a combination of alternative medicine and traditional medicine (ie chemo) can achieve the best outcomes, especially in cases of lymphoma. Good luck. Tags: 17 comments so far...
Re: Holistic Cancer Treatment
I'm not sure about Holistic Treatments. My 8 yr old Boxer had an enlarged heart for about one year and was on heart meds.He was doing great! Later he was diagnosed also with a tumor near his heart. The tumor was malignant, but had not yet spread, but my vet was not sure how fast it was growing. They planned on doing another ultrasound in 2 weeks. We sadly lost him within 6 days of being diagnosed, which broke our hearts! I.m not sure about Holistic Treatments, but we would have tried anything! GOOD LUCK TO YOU and your Kitty.

Re: Holistic Cancer Treatment
One of my dogs just had his leg amputated due to bone cancer. Our vet said that bone cancer is extremely aggressive and that we should just enjoy him since he is older (12). For this type of cancer he did not recommend chemo or radiation. Not satisfied with doing nothing, I have read every scrap of info online about cancer in pets. I currently have him on antioxidants and immunity support holistic supplements. I am using an antioxidant "cocktail" pill which includes grape seed extract and beta carotene, and an antioxidant complex pill that includes acai, pomegranate, etc. One if his immune system supplements is a fish oil capsule. I have seen similar immune supplements online for cats. It is a bit pricey, but well worth it!! His appetite has picked up and he is acting like he did before he was ill. His surgery was only a month ago, but we are so happy with the results, so far. We are praying that we have him for a few more years!! Best of luck to your and your cat!!

Re: Holistic Cancer Treatment
I am all for natural healing and any plant, fruit or vegetable which boosts immunity. I have not used any on my companion pets ,and know their metabolism is different, but I currently have just begun a honey/cinnamon recipe for myself and from the way I feel I would give it to my animals if I thought they would benefit. Another of natures whole foods for man/beast is Salba, it's like wheatgerm....add to anything.

Re: Holistic Cancer Treatment
I have heard tremendous success stories over the years from people enjoying a product called "CellQuest". I understand that people and dogs can and do drink it; however, I have been told that we cannot get it past a cat's nose. It is simply the extract of plantains, is totally natural and actually works. A vet in Tampa prescribes it for his dog patients. Typically it is mixed into beef broth or chicken broth so the dogs find it tasty. However, I have been told that it does not cure all forms of cancer and that after chemotherapy that tastebuds change. Sometimes, after chemo, the dog will not find it palatable. However, I strongly recommend this for people as well as dogs from everything I have learned about it. They have a website you can visit to learn more.

Re: Holistic Cancer Treatment
I read about something called "ES Clear" for cancer- there is one for cats and one for dogs. I don't know if it works...there are testimonials on the site (Googled it) saying it works. Our vet always recommended "Transfer Factor 4 Cats" when our one kitty had a cold to help increase their immunity. I also read something about "Graviola" pills....but they were for humans...supposedly it just target the cancer cells and not the healthy tissue. When I was looking for info years ago for an ex-coworker for cancer, there is some "flax seed oil and cottage cheese mixture" that a Dr. Budwig (think it is) in Germany has used on people with early and late -stage cancer...and it went away? Supposedly, cancer can only exist in an acidic environment...therefore, the challenge would be to feed the cat foods that are alkaline. Hopefully, something will work. She is a BEAUTIFUL kitty! Re: Holistic Cancer Treatment
Hi, I would recommend contacting a homeopathic vet for a consult. I have a diabetic cat w/a tumor in the lung. We only caught the mass/tumor by accident due to a liver episode. I have used a mushroom blend and alternated that with Transfer Factor Plus, and other vits., like C,E and multi, and various herbs depending on her current status. e.g. diabetics are prone to UTIs, so I use Tinkle Tonic, milk thistle, dandelion, for keeping her kidneys and liver in check. She has a liver crisis and was jaundiced, I pulled her out of that with these herbs and fluids. I also work with the homeopath and have used homeopathic remedies. They take all the symptoms and life history of the animal and prescribe from that. Soemthing has been working because the vets are surprised we've seen no real changes in the lung mass and she is generally healthy to have these things going on, or at least maintaining. It's a day by day watch for this and that thing, but so far, we are winning. I also use flower essences recently recommended by the homeopath and I am learning these help also. For the heart issue, are u using any conventional drugs to address the heart? Watch for increased breathing, congestion, and lethargy. Lungs are prone to get fluid with this. I lost a kitty recently to what they think was heart related very quickly. See a cardiologist to be sure and safe. -PR

Re: Holistic Cancer Treatment
Some alternative ideas.... My shepherd had been diagnosed with pre-cancerous anomolies in his anal sacs, a couple of years ago. My regular vet, also holistic did not have any answers. I wanted to try anything to help him. So the following may be something you are open to. I found Dr. Van Volkenbourgh who is a vet and energy healer (www.dranyes.com/index.html) and she helped us to understand what could help him and what coud be causing this to occur, it involved Poly MVA (a very expensive liquid, which my regular vet had heard of but did not have proof that it worked) along with clearing the energy in the home and not having any arguments in front of him (unsetteling energy). She also suggested egg yolks every day (he is 100 pds so 4-6 a day) she suggested that part of the egg has good properties to help fight the cancer. I also had Reiki energy work done on him regularly. She is rather expensive.
Someone else that you may want to try first is Bill Northern ,(www.billnorthern.com) who I have met and taken a class from who is a dowser and is able to find health issues in animals and communicates with them regarding their health. My shepherd, who healed, has some back issues and Bill was able to see where exactly a chyroprator needed to work on him in order to relieve his pain. (Bill also works with horse trainors in Kentucky, on a regular basis, who have race horses) Bill is able to find out what is wrong and possibly give some advice as to what can help, if not cure, to ease the distress. He is very affordable.
Lastly, if you are open to it, a wonderful animal communicator is Debbie McGillivray (www.animaltelepathy.com). I think we all know our animal friends are little people, we just do not know how to communicate with them. Sometimes we are not able to save our animal friends, but it can help us and them and give closure if they are able to express their feelings to us so they know we understand them and how much they love us and we love them. She is very affordable as well. I pray you are able to find something that helps your cat to heal.

Wanted to send best wishes and tell you to keep being open-minded, positive and proactive. I have cancer and though it may be different I can share that diagnosis must be met with good questions and the desire to receive good answers and treatment. Just wanted to write to support you in your journey with your pet. Bless both of you!

Re: Holistic Cancer Treatment
My Puncess was recently (February) diagnosed with oral cancer. The vet was really not much help, pretty much told me to prepare for the worse. Could be a month, could be six months. I couldn't not do anything. I called a homeopathic doctor here in the Bay Area that I've used before. My cats have always responded so well to homeopathic medicine. Puncess has been on the medicine for a few months now and is doing great. I know it won't cure the cancer, but I wanted to give her the best quality of life I could for as long as I could. She is 17 years old, and by the time I rescued her in 2000, had been through a lot. But she is doing great now. You wouldn't know anything was wrong with her. One of the tumors disappeared, but another is slowly growing. She has a wonderful appetite and enjoys each day. And that is what I want for her. I just couldn't stand by and do nothing.
