| Apr 23 Written by:kim_danoff Wednesday, April 23, 2008 Q: We have a dog named Benny and for a while he has had a little lump on his back. It does not seem like it hurts him and we took him to the vet they said not to worry about it. That was about a year ago and he still has it. I was wondering if that was normal? He is a male Shih-Tzu, five years old.
A: Having a lump is not normal. Lumps can be benign or they can be malignant. In order to determine that, typically it requires an aspirate using a needle where the cells can then be looked at under a microscope. If you are concerned, you can speak to your veterinarian about performing this test. Tags: 23 comments so far...
Re: Lumps?
I would make your current vet test the lump, if wont do it try another vet. I had my old dog with alump and it turned out to be cancerous. I caught it soon and was able to remove the cancer with surgery. There are many types of cancers for pets. Do some research on pet cancers.

Re: Lumps?
Is this an area where a vaccination was given? My cat has a small lump that is from a vaccination. It's been there for about 8 years.. I was told not to worry. I just watch it. It has never gotten any bigger.

Re: Lumps?
Some dogs get what are called sebaceous cysts. They are like huge zits that get big, go down, some times erupt. Take him to the vet, have it evaluated and even get a second opinion if you're not satisfied. My basset has two on her rump. My beagle/cocker mix had tumors grow around his rear, in his mouth, and were likely found throughout his system as a dog of 17 years. Always better safe than sorry though right?

Re: Lumps?
I would get a second opinion. Your vet can't know for sure just by looking at it. My son had one on his leg a few weeks ago. We had it removed on a Thursday and I had to wait until Monday to find out if it was malignant or not, longest 4 days of my life. So while it may not be anything that is detrimental to his health, NORMAL suggest that all dogs, at least of the same breed should have one.

Re: Lumps?
There are also some lumps that are "fatty"tumors, not hurtful..,But isn't it scary, My little Femal Tia,(10) looks just like your male, how sweet. Don't you LOVE their personality?

Re: Lumps?
Hi there..I have 6 Yorkies, and occassionally, they get a lump after removal of a tick. Sometimes, it lasts for quite a while. However, if it gets any larger, I would have it checked.

Re: Lumps?
I'm new to this wonderful site. Adding my good wishes to finding the lump on your beautiful Shih Tzu is not serious. I have a Yorkie, named Sami, two years old. I know how concerned I would be in your position. Yes, have it aspirated to be certain and calm your fears.

Re: Lumps?
I had a wonderful poodle, Raymond, for almost 16 years. As he got older, he began getting these fatty tumors. His vet aspirated several of them but the results of the tests were never bad. The older he got, the more he got and some of them got pretty big. Fortunately, he was never in pain because of them.

Re: Lumps?
Find a vet who cares enough to do the testing to know for sure. I have a shih tzu and would have it checked into. Nothing to mess around with; better safe than sorry.

Re: Lumps?
My Chloe has a lump on her back and the vet said it isn't serious, doesn't hurt her and hasn't grown in the 15 months she has owned me. I have it checked when I take her for check-ups. So far so good! Hope your news is good when you have your pet checked.

Re: Lumps?
many lumps are non-cancerous and do not need to be removed for anything other than cosmetic reasons. However, if the lump reaches the point that the animal is in pain surgical removal may be necessary.

Re: Lumps?
Simple decision. Have it tested! If your current vet won't do it, find one who will! He's sure a cutie pie.

Re: Lumps?
I had a little Yorkie mix. She had a very small lump on her back (like a mole). When she was about 4 yrs. old a Vet told me I should have this removed. I moved and began seeing another Vet who told me not to worry about it. Some years passed and the little bump began to grow. I wish I would have listened to the first Vet. It was cancer and my dog did not survive. If only...

Re: Lumps?
I have had two cats and one dog which died from complications of vaccine associated sarcomas. Just recently, I found a lump near the spine of another of my cats. The vet immediately opted to surgically remove the lump utilizing the "block type"? of removal because of our history with these tumors. I cannot imagine any vet telling you to ignore it without even doing a biopsy. Lumps are something we should always be cautious of. I know my situation is not the norm, but I would get a second opinion.

Re: Lumps?
Yes you definitely need to have the lump aspirated. That's the only way to know is it just a fatty tumor (lipoma) or is it a cyst, or is it something more serious. They can tell immediately if its just fat or a cyst...but things can be a little more complicated if it's something else. Depending on how good your vet is at cytology he/she may or may not be able to determine what kind of cancerous tumor it is if that's the case. Or the vet can just make a slide from the aspirate and send that out to a lab for analysis. If it's anything concerning then you need to have the lump removed. Or if the lump starts growing rapidly then have it removed. Things are so much easier to remove when small because then there is more skin to work with there surgically. Good luck.
