Meet Cindy Alvey

Cindy Alvey

Cindy (Williams) Alvey has been involved in the local rescue community since adopting her dog, Cody from the DC Animal Shelter in 1996. Since that time, 4 cats: Silver, Puma, Sam and Frankie, have joined the family.

In 2004, she started an online pet supply company called Pet Pantry Express and in the summer of 2006, joined forces with Sue Bell, Executive Director of Homeward Trails Animal Rescue to open PetMAC – the Marketplace and Adoption Center.

PetMAC only sells all-natural foods with no chemical preservatives or animal by-products, as well as treats, toys, collars/leashes, beds -- even home-baked treats and doggy ice cream! PetMAC hosts educational seminars, fun social events and donates a portion of PetMAC’s profits to Homeward Trails and other local animal rescue groups.

It's that time of year again....what to get for Uncle George?  Would Grams prefer a pink or peach sweater?  Where do you find that thing-a-mig that little Bobby just can't live without?  Well, what about the animals?  Yes, I know... you've already gotten a stocking for Buster and some cute toys for Whiskers, but what about all the animals out there who don't HAVE families to love them?  What's going to happen to them over the holidays and during the cold months to follow?

Luckily, it's not too difficult to look around and find a business or oranization that is doing a supply drive for the local animal shelter.  PetMAC - the Marketplace and Adoption Center, is no exception!  Both PetMAC locations (Arlington and DC) are currently doing supply drives for some rural shelters we have relationship with.  These are very poor, very rural shelters who have few to no resources and can barely squeak by giving the basic necessities, let alone toys, treats, beds or sweaters to keep the dogs warm!

One such shelter is the Hampshire County Humane Society.  Located in a small, rural community in West Virginia, they struggle to rescue the dogs, cats, and recently a pig, who are brought to the shelter.  They work to find local adopters but have very few local adoptions each year.  The shelter has a full time shelter manager who runs the shelter with the help of a handful of volunteers.  They work to socialize each animal that comes in and really show the animals love and compassion.  They are very small shelter and fill up very quickly.  It's not at all unusual for the shelter manager to arrive at work in the morning to find a dog tied to the door or a box of kittens in front of the shelter.  The shelter does not have a lot of resources but they make do with what they have and they work hard to see that no adoptable animal has to be put to sleep.
