Meet Cindy Alvey

Cindy Alvey

Cindy (Williams) Alvey has been involved in the local rescue community since adopting her dog, Cody from the DC Animal Shelter in 1996. Since that time, 4 cats: Silver, Puma, Sam and Frankie, have joined the family.

In 2004, she started an online pet supply company called Pet Pantry Express and in the summer of 2006, joined forces with Sue Bell, Executive Director of Homeward Trails Animal Rescue to open PetMAC – the Marketplace and Adoption Center.

PetMAC only sells all-natural foods with no chemical preservatives or animal by-products, as well as treats, toys, collars/leashes, beds -- even home-baked treats and doggy ice cream! PetMAC hosts educational seminars, fun social events and donates a portion of PetMAC’s profits to Homeward Trails and other local animal rescue groups.

Falls Church, VA-based Organic Doggy Kitchen (ODK) makes great-tasting (so my dog has told me!) multi-grain dog treats made with human-grade, certified organic ingredients, free of preservatives and artificial colorings.   Certified organic foods are free of chemicals, pesticides, artificial preservatives, hormones or colorings, and therefore, safer for your beloved pets and better for the environment in which they are grown. The grains are freshly ground and the treats are baked to order, so are always fresh and delicious (one smell and you’ll be hooked!)  They have 4 standard flavors that are made year-round:  Peanut Butter Banana, Peanut Butter Biscotti (wheat-free), Apple Cinnamon & Molasses, and Cheese.  New for the holidays, they have just released a star-shaped, wheat/corn free Honey & Oat cookie that has proven popular among taste tests at PetMAC!  All bags will come with a red bow for the holidays, so will make an attractive gift for your tail-waggin’ friends!

Wait, they’re not done yet!  Gearing up for a very interesting and heated presidential race next year, ODK will be releasing Political biscuits - Republican Elephants in a red bag and Democratic Donkeys in a blue bag. These Peanut Butter & Honey flavored biscuits are wheat/corn/dairy-free and low in fat and, of course, 100% organic!  Let your dog decide which party they “like” best!  Additionally a portion of each sale of Political treats will be donated to the Washington Humane Society (www.washhumane.org), so whether your dog likes to chomp elephants or donkeys, they’re helping rescue animals find new homes!

Have a special occasion coming up – doggy birthday party or welcome home celebration?  ODK also does custom cakes that are T-A-S-T-Y (yep, I tried it!)  We had a delicious pumpkin cake with peanut butter frosting for our Halloween party and nary a crumb was left to bring home!

A healthy diet plays a significant role in your dog’s health and wellness. We watch what we eat ourselves, so why not apply the same concern to our beloved canine companions?  Organic Doggy Kitchen treats are a great start and can be found at PetMAC in Arlington (www.petmac.org) or at other area retailers.  For more information and a complete list of retailers, check out their website:  www.organicdogs.com.
