Meet Cindy Alvey

Cindy Alvey

Cindy (Williams) Alvey has been involved in the local rescue community since adopting her dog, Cody from the DC Animal Shelter in 1996. Since that time, 4 cats: Silver, Puma, Sam and Frankie, have joined the family.

In 2004, she started an online pet supply company called Pet Pantry Express and in the summer of 2006, joined forces with Sue Bell, Executive Director of Homeward Trails Animal Rescue to open PetMAC – the Marketplace and Adoption Center.

PetMAC only sells all-natural foods with no chemical preservatives or animal by-products, as well as treats, toys, collars/leashes, beds -- even home-baked treats and doggy ice cream! PetMAC hosts educational seminars, fun social events and donates a portion of PetMAC’s profits to Homeward Trails and other local animal rescue groups.

It’s that haunting time of year again!  The time when cute Golden Retrievers turn into glowing skeletons, Dachshunds become Hot Dogs complete with ketchup or mustard, and cats don witch’s hats (well, for about 30 seconds, if you’re lucky!)  Why do we like to torture our animals so much by dressing them up so everyone will laugh and giggle at how cute they are?  ‘Cause it’s just so much darn fun! Just don’t look at the sad, puppy-dog eyes begging “Come on, mom, do I gotta?”  Yep, they gotta!

So, you’ve decided a good Halloween dress-up party is in order this year, but which costume to choose?  The best ones are the ones that say something about the animal’s personality.  At PetMAC, Evil One is a popular cat costume.  Why?  I’m scared to ask but I figure if people are spending money to dress up their cats, they can’t be too devilish…

Got an athletic dog?  Make him a Football Player!  A dog who is a bit of a diva – how about a Queen’s robe and hat?  Love to eat?  Piggy Pooch is perfect!  An escape artist?  Lock ‘em up with Prison Pooch.  The list goes on and on….  If you’re still undecided, here is a listing of the Top 10 Pet Costumes according to the National Retail Federation's Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey:

  1. Devil
  2. Pumpkin
  3. Witch
  4. Princess
  5. Angel
  6. Pirate
  7. Hot Dog
  8. Bat
  9. Black Cat
  10. Clown

All dressed up and no where to go? Not exactly!  There are events and activities all over town!  Check with your local pet boutique – they are most likely doing something fun for the holiday… a parade, a costume contest, a party….  PetMAC is fortunate to be on the edge of a residential neighborhood, so we get kids and dogs alike at our Halloween Party which is held the night of Halloween (for more info, go to www.petmac.org)  Take your dog trick or treating with you – some houses now have treats for the canine goblin at their door!

SAFETY!  Not to be forgotten, keep these helpful safety tips in mind this Halloween.  NO chocolate for your dog or cat!  Some animals react badly to the cocoa and can get sick or even die.  If your animal is a door-runner and you’re handing out candy, put them on a leash or in a safe room so when you open the door, you can focus on the kids and not worry about your loved-one escaping (better than climbing through bushes at 10:00 at night as well!)  If you’re out and about, understand your dog could be a little freaked by all the strange “creatures” wandering around, so go slow and be cautious when people come up to your dog. Have a pouch of treats and let the miniature Aliens and Cinderellas give your dog a treat – that’s a sure-fire way to make friends!!  And definitely keep inquiring noses away from jack-o-lanterns with lit candles – that’s just a disaster waiting to happen!

Oh, and take LOTS of pictures and send them to all your friends - humiliation this great HAS to be shared!  ;-)

Happy Haunting!

Re: Are You Ready for a Furry Halloween?

Ordinarily, I wouldn't think of dressing up my dog for Hallowe'en, but then again, Tas...aka "the new guy"...is enough of a goofball that he'd probably get off on getting all dressed up! I've decided to put a whole new spin on the notion of dogs and their owners resembling eachother; Tas has a very nice faux sheepskin coat (he inherited it from my last dog, Beau Geste O'Mahuna) to keep him nice and warm during the worst of Winter, and I know of a specialty shop not too far away where I can lay my hands on a black "outlaw" doggie hat and amber shades (made by a company called "Doggles") and I'll wear my real sheepskin jacket, black leather "Outback" hat and my own amber shooters' shades, so we'll be dressed in identical outfits! (On a more positive note, I'll be protecting Tas' eyes, since these "Doggles" are 100% UVproof!)

Mind you, this won't be for Hallowe'en so much as everyday streetwear when we go for walks during Autumn, much of Winter, and right through 'till early- to mid-Spring. This way we'll be able to dress and look alike right through all but the very worst of Winter, when it gets too cold for the sheepskin jacket and I'll have to break out the "big guns" of Winter wear! Tas even has boots to protect his feet from all the salt they use on the streets and sidewalks up here during the Winter...better to spend a few minutes getting his boots on before going out than to have him licking up all that salt from his feet after walking!

I know some people might not think too highly of me dressing my dog up to look like me, but I think it'll be just too cute to resist, and of course it'll make Tas "Chuffer" McGeek even more of a "babe magnet" than he is already! I'll see if I can't get a friend to take some pictures of us all dressed up together once I get his "outlaw black hat" and amber shades, LOL!
