I am very and don't know what to do about it.  I have a 10 yr. old Mini Aussie and just over the last 4 years, worse the last yr. he has started lifting on my furniture and fireplace.  The Vet says as his age getting him fixed probably won't help.  Even though I clean with Nature's Miracle constantly the smell won't go away.  Any suggestions for me.  My husband is not as understanding as me and is ready to toss him out.  I really need your help.

Given the dogs age, maybe he is just "forgetting" that he needs to potty outside. Try regulatting his water intake, and get him outside right after he drinks his water. And tell your hubby to knock it off, he to, will get old someday, and hopefully you won't just toss him out!

Is your dog marking territory or actually taking a pee? If he is marking territory, he might be responding to an unfixed female in the neighborhood. They can detect a female many, many houses away. I would definitely get him fixed as it just might help, if not eliminate the problem. You can mostly avoid bad boy behavior by getting the dog fixed at a very early age, just after their sexual maturity shows. I agree with Best in Show: If bad behavior was a good reason to dump someone, husbands would be in the dog house all the time. :-)

the vet is right. any new animals in the house since he started this? you ll have to treat it like housebreaking 101 at this point.  Does the dog have a clean bill of health?

Assuming there are no underlying medical problems, have you considered a doggie door? My older female started having accidents in the house when she turned 12 and it turned out that her old bladder couldn't hold it as long anymore. Getting a doggie door so she could go out when she needed to worked 100%. Make sure your dog won't try digging under or jumping over your backyard fence before letting him have free roam (especially since he's intact). I've also seen "wraps" for male dogs that mark...kind of like a diaper but with changeable pads. Check into JB Wholesale, Foster and Smith, or some other dog catalogs (I can't remember exactly where I saw them).
