By now you've probably heard about the puppy mill in Tennessee that was shut down recently. If you're wondering what happened to the dogs there, I have some good news. There were too many dogs to for one shelter to accomodate, but about 130 were brought to the Humane Society of Broward County. (Fort Lauderdale is in Broward County.) It took a day or two before any of the dogs were ready to be adopted, but in the meantime the media reported on the dogs' ordeal. So...when the shelter opened on Tuesday, there were already over 300 people waiting in line to see all the new arrivals. More came during the day, and most of the dogs that were ready to be adopted had begun the process. More will become available during the week. Some of the dogs were in less-than-ideal health, but that didn't seem to deter people. For example, there was a miniature pinscher with an eye infection and a hematoma. The woman who signed up to adopt him was warned that he wasn't housebroken and might have some socialization problems, but she still was eager to adopt him. The larger dogs may have a harder time being adopted, but I'm also hoping that with so many people coming in, some of the dogs that were already at the shelter will get new homes, too. Happy endings!
