Silverstein wrote this, it is easy to detect his humor and style

ah ha ha… I don’t believe it... … hey Ray, hey Sugar, tell ‘em who we are…)

Well, we big rock singers, we got golden fingers, and we’re loved everywhere we go.
(That sounds like us)
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth at ten thousand dollars a show.
We take all kind of pills to give us all kind of thrills but the thrill we’ve never known
Is the thrill that’ll getcha when you get your picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

Rolling Stone – wanna see my picture on the cover-
Stone- wanna buy 5 copies for my mother-
Stone- wanna see my smilin’ face
on the cover of the Rolling Stone.
(That’s a very good idea…)

I got a freaky old lady name a’ Cocaine Kitty who embroiders on my jeans.
I got my poor old gray-haired daddy
drivin’ my limousine.
Now it’s all designed to blow our minds
but our minds won’t really be blown
like the blow that’ll getcha when you get your picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

Rolling Stone- wanna see our pictures on the cover-
Stone- wanna buy 5 copies for our mothers-
Stone- wanna see my smilin’ face
on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

ROCK AND ROLL!
(Aw, that’s just beautiful)

We got a lotta little teenage blue-eyed groupies
who do anything we say.
We got a genuine Indian guru
who’s teachin’ us a better way.
We got all the friends that money can buy
so we never have to be alone.
And we keep getting’ richer but we can’t get our picture
on the cover of the Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone- wanna see my picture on the cover-
Stone- wanna buy 5 copies for my mother-
Stone- wanna see my smilin’ face on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

On the cover of the Rolling…
Wanna see my picture on the cover-
wanna buy 5 copies for my mother-
wanna see my smilin’ face on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

(Man, I can see it now… there we are… on the front, smilin

Thanks for your kind words Sweet Jane

LOL, JJ! Good stuff. Good stuff from EVERYONE!!!

G- you just continue to surprise! You're the kind of guy who likes to read to your lady by the fire, aren't ya? :) Nice.

Henry Purcell - a favorite composer

I attempt from Love's sickness to Fly.....in....vain
Since I am myself my own fever
Since i am myself my own fever and pain
No more now
No more now
Fond heart
with pride no more swell
Thou canst not raise forces
thous canst not raise forces enough to rebel
I attempt from Love's sickness to fly....in...vain
For Love has more power and less mercy than fate
To make us ruin
To make us seek ruin and on those that hate

From the Opera "The Medium" -
Sad.....the music is written with the same beautiful suspense and minor key as the lyrics make it sound like it should be

The sun has fallen and it lies in blood
The moon is weaving bandages of gold
O black swan
Where, oh where
Is my lover gone?
Torn and tattered is my bridal gown
And my lamp is lost
And my lamp is lost
With silver needles and with silver thread
The stars stitch a shroud for the dying sun
O black swan
Where, oh where
Has my lover gone?
I had given him a kiss of fire
And a golden ring
Don't you hear your lover moan?
Eyes of glass and feet of stone
Shells for teeth and weeds for tongue
Deep, deep down in the river's bed
He's looking for the ring
Eyes wide open, never asleep
He's looking for the ring
The spools unravel and the needles break
The sun is buried and the stars weep
Oh black swan
Oh black wave take me away with you
I will share with you my golden hair
And my bridal crown
Oh, take me down with you
Take me down to my wand'ring lover
With my child unborn

Lovely words again Jennifer. It is great to be made aware of things I have not experienced before.

I have been known to read to a lady by the fire, in bed, or seated next to a tub surrounded by candles. Generally that calls for poetry and much of it I have written myself but othewise it would be usually be something like this:

i carry your heart with me by E. E. Cummings

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

This one is not easily recited and takes practice, an easier one would be Browning:

WITH stammering lips and insufficient sound
I strive and struggle to deliver right
That music of my nature, day and night
With dream and thought and feeling interwound
And inly answering all the senses round
With octaves of a mystic depth and height
Which step out grandly to the infinite
From the dark edges of the sensual ground.
This song of soul I struggle to outbear
Through portals of the sense, sublime and whole,
And utter all myself into the air:
But if I did it,--as the thunder-roll
Breaks its own cloud, my flesh would perish there,
Before that dread apocalypse of soul.

or Roethke:

Love likes a gander, and adores a goose:
Her full lips pursed, the errant note to seize;
She played it quick, she played it light and loose;
My eyes, they dazzled at her flowing knees;
Her several parts could keep a pure repose,
Or one hip quiver with a mobile nose
(She moved in circles, and those circles moved.)

Let seed be grass, and grass turn into hay:
I'm martyr to a motion not my own;
What's freedom for? To know eternity.
I swear she cast a shadow white as stone.
But who would count eternity in days?
These old bones live to learn her wanton ways:
(I measure time by how a body sways.)

I love the line, "I measure time by how a body sways".

This is the quiet time for me, most of  my guests departed late yesterday but five remained. Unfortunately I am used to rising early and it is a hard habit to break for me. I have a small pond on my property that now possesses a family of Canadian geese. Mother, father and seven gossling. They all want to be fed crackers or bits of bread but the parents are so protective.  If you reach towards them, both parents open their beaks to make a quiet hissing sound and expose their tongues, giving you a gentle warning. They swim in a straight line with the mother leading and the father bringing up the rear. The father tends compete with the babies for food when you throw crackers but the mother just stands, letting everyone else eat. (I make a special point to see she is well fed, it breaks my heart to see her standing and waiting.)

The baby geese are so cute!!! and the dogs want to see them so bad!!! but we are making them take turns using the pond and are sure the babies are safe. We hope to have lunch today down there and watch them as we eat. Diane is going to show us all how to make vegetable sushi so that should be fun.

I am still waiting for a sample of Gregs poetry, maybe one day.

Here is one I like, Emily Dickinson

I HIDE myself within my flower,
  That wearing on your breast,
You, unsuspecting, wear me too—
And angels know the rest.

I hide myself within my flower,         5
That, fading from your vase,
You, unsuspecting, feel for me
Almost a loneliness.

JJ--

I love Emily Dickinson. This is my fave:

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant---
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise

As Lightening to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind---

Great one Sky! This one has special meaning for me

Wild nights! Wild nights!
Were I with thee,
Wild nights should be
Our luxury!

Futile the winds
To a heart in port,
Done with the compass,
Done with the chart.

Rowing in Eden!
Ah! the sea!
Might I but moor
To-night in thee!

I like the other Wild Night as well

As you brush your shoes
And stand before the mirror
And you comb your hair
And grab your coat and hat
And you walk, wet streets
Tryin to remember
All the wild breezes
In your memry ever.
And evrything looks so complete
When youre walkin out on the street
And the wind catches your feet
And sends you flyin, cryin
Ooh-wee!
The wild night is calling.
And all the girls walk by
Dressed up for each other
And the boys do the boogie-woogie
On the corner of the street
And the people passin by
Just stare in wild wonder
And the inside juke-box
Roars out just like thunder.
And everything looks so complete...
The wild night is calling
The wild night is calling
Come on out and dance
Come on out and make romance....

and of course:

Hey, where did we go
Days when the rains came ?
Down in the hollow
Playing a new game,
Laughing and a-running, hey, hey,
Skipping and a-jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our, our hearts a-thumping
And you, my brown-eyed girl,

You, my brown-eyed girl.
Whatever happened
To tuesday and so slow
Going down to the old mine with a
Transistor radio.
Standing in the sunlight laughing
Hide behind a rainbows wall,
Slipping and a-sliding
All along the waterfall
With you, my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
Just like that
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
La dee dah.

So hard to find my way
Now that Im all on my own.
I saw you just the other day,
My, how you have grown!
Cast my memory back there, lord,
Sometime Im overcome thinking about
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium
With you, my brown-eyed girl,
You, my brown-eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
Laying in the green grass
Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah
Dee dah dee dah dee dah dee dah dee dah dee
Sha la la la la la la la la la la la la
Dee dah la dee dah la dee dah la
D-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d...

and :

Well, its a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
neath the cover of october skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And Im trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the nights magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

Chorus:
Can I just have one a more moondance with you, my love
Can I just make some more romance with a-you, my love

Well, I wanna make love to you tonight
I cant wait til the morning has come
And I know that the time is just right
And straight into my arms you will run
And when you come my heart will be waiting
To make sure that youre never alone
There and then all my dreams will come true, dear
There and then I will make you my own
And every time I touch you, you just tremble inside
And I know how much you want me that you cant hide

Chorus

Repeat 1st verse

One more moondance with you in the moonlight
On a magic night
La, la, la, la in the moonlight
On a magic night
Cant I just have one more dance with you my love

I have several favorite song writers but Van Morrison is very near the top.

I can remember saying the first words to the greater doxology, Gloria in Excelsis Deo but thinking

Gloria, G..L..O..R..I...A  Gloria

Like to tell you 'bout my baby, you know she comes around,
Just 'bout five feet four a-from her head to the ground.
You know she comes around here just about midnight,
She make me feel so good, Lord, she make me feel all right.

> And her name is G-L-O-R-I,

G-L-O-R-I-A GLORIA
G-L-O-R-I-A GLORIA
I'm gonna shout it all night GLORIA
I'm gonna shout it every day, GLORIA
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah.

She comes around here just about midnight, ha
She make me feel so good, Lord, I wanna say she make me feel all right.
Comes a-walkin' down my street, then she comes up to my house,
She knock upon my door and then she comes to my room,
Yeah an' she make me feel all right,

G-L-O-R-I-A GLORIA
G-L-O-R-I-A GLORIA
I'm gonna shout it all night GLORIA
I'm gonna shout it every day GLORIA
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah,
Looks so good GLORIA
All right, feel so good GLORIA
All right, yeah now.

and then there is the U2 song

I try to sing this song
I...I try to stand up
But I can't find my feet
I try, I try to speak up
But only in you I'm complete

Gloria...in te domine
Gloria...exultate
Gloria...Gloria
Oh Lord, loosen my lips

I try to sing this song
I...I try to get in
But I can't find the door
The door is open
You're standing there
You let me in

Gloria...in te domine
Gloria...exultate
Oh Lord, if I had anything
Anything at all
I'd give it to you
I'd give it to you

Gloria...Gloria...

I adore shel silverstein and dickinson!

We laid down under the stars
under the dead of night
there in a field of wildflowers
we finally made things right
where no bands of gold or diamond ring
or wishes of well could hold
more than our hearts of good intent
more than our promise told

Hope you all had an amazing weekend!

Very nice Jennifer I hope you had a good weekend also. Last night was my first full nights sleep in a while but it is always fun to visit with friends.

Late yesterday afternoon we were trying to name the goslings that are living at my pond. It was nearly impossible since they all look so much alike and we could never keep the names straight except for one. One has a problem with his left leg and although he seems to walk all right, and swim well, he never seems to be able to tuck the leg under him like the others do. Therefore he is suddenly special and needs the most attention and deserves a name. If a boy he will be Andy, if a girl Anna since they are of the family anatidae.

FACT 1: As each Goose flaps its wings it creates an "uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.
LESSON: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

FACT 2: When a Goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.
LESSON: If we have as much sense as a Goose we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

FACT 3: When the lead Goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another Goose flies to the point position.
LESSON: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership. As with Geese, people are interdependent on each other's skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts, talents or resources.

FACT 4: The Geese flying in formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
LESSON: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of other) is the quality of honking we seek.

FACT 5: When a Goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, two Geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.
LESSON: If we have as much sense as Geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

I love fact five about two other geese helping the injured one. Such pretty creatures. I have a vet who will visit and look at Andy/Annas leg and see if anything can be done. You are forever responsible for that which you tame.

Deaf Donald is my favorite Shel Silverstein poem. The text in italics means he's using sign language.

Deaf Donald met Talkie Sue
But I Love You was all he could do.
And Sue said, "Donald I sure do like you."
But I Love You was all he could do.
And Sue asked Donald, "Do you like me too?"
But I Love You was all he could do.
"Good-bye then, Donald, I'm leaving you."
But I Love You was all he could do.
And she left forever and she never knew
That I Love You means I Love You!

sigh

Sometimes it is hard to communicate the essential.

Greg, thanks for the photos of the goslings...they are so CUTE! I liked the poem as well...sad but good.

JJ, It was nice to meet ya, I heard alot of great things about you, we will defintely have to speak again sometime.

Ok, here is one of my favorite songs

People are strange:

People are strange when you're a stranger,
Faces look ugly when you're alone.
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted,
Streets are uneven when you're down.

When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain.
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange,
When you're strange,
When you're strange.

All right, yeah!

People are strange when you're a stranger,
Faces look ugly when you're alone.
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted,
Streets are uneven when you're down.

When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange
Alright yeah
When you're strange
Faces come out of the rain
When you're strange
No one remembers your name
When you're strange
When you're strange
When you're strange

The Doors

Another great poem by Maya Angelou:
Remembrance

Your hands easy
weight, teasing the bees
hived in my hair, your smile at the
slope of my cheek. On the
occasion, you press
above me, glowing, spouting
readiness, mystery rapes
my reason

When you have withdrawn
your self and the magic, when
only the smell of your
love lingers between
my breasts, then, only
then, can I greedily consume
your presence.

and the final poem:
Human Abstract by William Blake

Pity would be no more,
If we did not make somebody Poor;
And Mercy no more could be,
If all were as happy as we;

And mutual fear brings peace,
Till the selfish loves increase;
Then Cruelty knits a snare,
And spreads his baits with care.

He sits down with holy fears,
And waters the ground with tears;
Then Humility takes its root
Underneath his foot.

Soon spreads the dismal shade
Of Mystery over his head;
And the Caterpillar and Fly
Feed on the Mystery.

And it bears the fruit of Deceit,
Ruddy and sweet to eat;
And the Raven his nest has made
In its thickest shade.

The Gods of the earth and sea,
Sought through Nature to find this Tree,
But their search was all in vain;
There grows one in the Human Brain.

Lala, you have such beauty and such depth, if only you were not an alien!

I particularly loved the Angelou poem, I will have to read more of her. Like you, the poem is very very sexy.

JJ took the gosling pics and I will try to post more as I get them or she can. I want to get back this weekend to see how they are doing, the one pic in my profile shows the one with the bad leg, it is in the upper left in the bottom of three goslings.

Part of a Harry Chapin song I love:

So I tried to teach her a couple of chords
and an easy melody;
but it always turned out she'd rather listen
to my guitar and me.
I could hear her old man laughing in the den,
playing stud poker with the boys
while I sang so soft in the living room,
to scared to make much noise.
I came one week and the den was dark
and she met me at the door.
And we sat on the couch and we sang and talked
till I could not sing no more.
The silence kept on building,
her eyes grew much too wide;
and I could her both of our heartbeats,
but there was no place to hide.

She said, "I wanna learn a love song full of happy things."
She said, "I wanna learn a love song; won't you let me hear you sing?"
She said, "I wanna learn a love song, I wanna hear you play."
She said, "I wanna learn a love song before you go away."

and :

Dripping streetlights
darkened buildings
wandering
head hung down low.
Where will she go?

Woman child, your eyes are wild.
The rain runs down your hair.
Woman child, mercy mild.
What will you tell your teddy bear?

I turned you on my solid body
my electric Gibson guitar.
My clever fingers searched
and found exactly where you are.
You went too far.

also:

He came home to Dayton and was questioned by his friends.
Then he smiled and just said nothing and he never sang again,
excepting very late at night when the shop was dark and closed.
He sang softly to himself as he sorted through the clothes.
Music was his life, it was not his livelihood,
and it made him feel so happy and it made him feel so good.
And he sang from his heart and he sang from his soul.
He did not know how well he sang; It just made him whole.

and finally:

It took a while, but she looked in the mirror,
And she glanced at the license for my name.
A smile seemed to come to her slowly,
It was a sad smile, just the same.
And she said, "How are you Harry?"
I said, "How are you Sue?
Through the too many miles
and the too little smiles
I still remember you."

It was somewhere in a fairy tale,
I used to take her home in my car.
We learned about love in the back of the Dodge,
The lesson hadn't gone too far.
You see, she was gonna be an actress,
And I was gonna learn to fly.
She took off to find the footlights,
And I took off to find the sky.

If anyone does not know the song Taxi, it is worth discovering. It reads like a poem.

Very nice Greg, and Lala I am glad you liked the pictures. We will talk soon, I have some stories to tell about Greg lol. He nearly got goose bit trying to help the baby with the bad leg but we all wanted to try to do something. A vet will know better what to do. I will think of words to post later.

Lala - I'm thoroughly enjoying your input.

People are Strange is a great song. The Lost Boys reminds me of hot summers in my hometown, riding my bike with friends all day long, sucking down "suicides" from the local Quick Trip, going to the movies to stay cool and sundown curfews! (If you don't know what a suicide is think a Long Island Ice Tea but with soda and clearly no alcohol!)

Speaking of childhood, these both always bring me back to a time when imagination led me into writing, dancing, reading, running around the back yard for hours, watching the clouds, laying on my parent's bed singing at the top of my lungs and picturing where my life would lead me one day, imitating various scenarios through my barbie dolls! Of course, life hasn't turned out to be anything I expected (my greatest desire was to make River Phoenix fall madly in love with me), but I believe wholeheartedly that the reality is much better.

Young child with dreams
Dream ev'ry dream on your own
When children play
seems like you end up alone
Papa says he'd love to be with you
If he had the time
So you turn on the only friend you can find
There in your mind

Shilo, when I was young
I used to call you name
When no one else would come
Shilo, you always came
And we'd play

Young girl with fire
Something said she understood
I wanted to fly
She made me feel like I could
Held my hand out, and I let her take me
Blind as a child
All I saw was the way that she made me smile
She made me smile

Shilo, when I was young
I used to call you name
When no one else would come
Shilo, you always came
And you'd stay

Had a dream, and it filled me with wonder
She had other plans
"Got to go, and I know that you'll understand"
I understand

Shilo, when I was young
I used to call you name
When no one else would come
Shilo, you always came
Come today

The very lovely John Denver:
Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

If I had a day that I could give you
I'd give to you a day just like today
If I had a song that I could sing for you
I'd sing a song to make you feel this way

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high

If I had a tale that I could tell you
I'd tell a tale sure to make you smile
If I had a wish that I could wish for you
I'd make a wish for sunshine all the while

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high
Sunshine almost all the time makes me high
Sunshine almost always

Cheers!

Fire and Ice
by: Robert Frost

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if I had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say thay for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice

who doesn't know this song:

my favorite lyrics:

Everybody knows that youve been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows youve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes

please do read on:

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that youve been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows youve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that its now or never
Everybody knows that its me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when youve done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old black joes still pickin cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that its moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But theres gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that youre in trouble
Everybody knows what youve been through
From the bloody cross on top of calvary
To the beach of malibu
Everybody knows its coming apart
Take one last look at this sacred heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows

Everybody knows youve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes

One of my favorite Cohen lines Lala I would post Chelsea Hotel but there are a couple lyrics that are a little dicey. Speaking of which, JJ, what happens in the hottub should stay in the hottub.

Lovely songs Jennifer, you do know such a broad range of music, Neal Diamond now. I may have quoted a John Denver song, if not here is one:

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that youll wait for me
Hold me like youll never let me go.
Im leavin on a jet plane
I dont know when Ill be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

Here is one by a folk singer I doubt many here know, it is a little obscure but I love the lyrics. The song is Pleasures of the Harbor

And the anchor hits the sand

The hungry hands

Have tied them to the port

The hour will be short

For leisure on the land

And the girls scent the air

They seem so fair

With paint on their face

Soft is their embrace

To lead them up the stairs

Soon your sailing will be over

Come and take the pleasures of the harbor

In the room dark and dim

Touch of skin

He asks her of her name

She answers with no shame

And not a sense of sin

Until the fingers draw the blinds

Sip of wine

The cigarette of doubt

The candle is blown out

The darkness is so kind

Soon your sailing will be over

Come and take the pleasures of the harbor

I particularly love, "the cigarette of doubt"

a few more lines:

It's always the old to lead us to the war
It's always the young to fall
Now look at all we've won with the sabre and the gun
Tell me is it worth it all

For i stole california from the mexican land
Fought in the bloody civil war
Yes i even killed my brother
And so many others
And i ain't marchin' anymore

words by Phil Ochs

My dad is quite the liberal, I was brought up listening to Dylan, Ochs,Baez, and Paxton.

A favorite Paxton song:

LAST THING ON MY MIND
(Tom Paxton)

It's a lesson too late for the learnin'
Made of sand, made of sand
In the wink of an eye my soul is turnin'
In your hand, in your hand.

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
Well, I could have loved you better
Didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind.

As we walk on, my thoughts keep tumblin'
Round and round, round and round
Underneath our feet the subways rumblin'
Underground, underground
CHORUS

As I lie in my bed in the mornin'
Without you, without you.
Every song in my breast lies a bornin'
Without you, without you.

CHORUS

You've got reasons a-plenty for goin'
This I know, this I know.
For the weeds have been steadily growin'
Please don't go, please don't go.

A few Baez lines:

How long since I've spent a whole night in a twin bed with a stranger
His warm arms all around me?
How long since I've gazed into dark eyes that melted my soul down
To a place where it longs to be?
All of your history has little to do with your face
You're mainly a mystery with violins filling in space

You stood in the nude by the mirror and picked out a rose
From the bouquet in our hotel
And lay down beside me again and I watched the rose
On the pillow where it fell
I sank and I slept in a twilight with only one care
To know that when day broke and I woke that you'd still be there

Greg - I love this line:

"All of your history has little to do with your face"

Here's one for Lala. I came across it today. Her words are rules to live by.

People will forget what you said
People will forget what you did
But people will never forget the way you made them feel
Maya Angelou

I've just seen a face,
I can't forget the time or place
Where we just met.
She's just the girl for me
And I want all the world to see
We've met, mmm-mmm-mmm-m'mmm-mmm.
Had it been another day
I might have looked the other way
And I'd have never been aware.
But as it is I'll dream of her
Tonight, di-di-di-di'n'di.
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
I have never known
The like of this, I've been alone
And I have missed things
And kept out of sight
But other girls were never quite
Like this, mmm-mmm-mmm-m'mmm
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
I've just seen a face,
I can't forget the time or place
Where we just met.
She's just the girl for me
And I want all the world to see
We've met, mmm-mmm-mmm-di'n'di
Falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
Oh, falling, yes I am falling,
And she keeps calling
Me back again.
The Beatles

And finally,

The beauty that addresses itself to the eyes is only the spell of the moment;
The eye of the body is not always that of the soul.

Jennifer, lovely words, you do have a great depth as so many others in this post. That quote reminds me of this one:

Voici mon secret. Il est très simple: on ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.

  • Here is my secret. It is very simple: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

or

Mais les yeux sont aveugles. Il faut chercher avec le cœur.

  • But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart...

another favorite by the same author,

Vous êtes belles, mais vous êtes vides.... On ne peut pas mourir pour vous.

  • You're beautiful, but you're empty.... No one could die for you.

And my very favorite:

Les hommes ont oublié cette vérité, dit le renard. Mais tu ne dois pas l’oublier. Tu deviens responsable pour toujours de ce que tu as apprivoisé.

  • "Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed."

Le Petit Prince...........Antoine de Saint Exupéry,

This is one book I  never tire of reading, thanks for reminding me of it Jennifer.

PS. Part of Chelsea Hotel, Leonard Cohen

Ah but you got away, didn't you babe,
you just turned your back on the crowd,
you got away, I never once heard you say,
I need you, I don't need you,
I need you, I don't need you
and all of that jiving around.

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
you were famous, your heart was a legend.
You told me again you preferred handsome men
but for me you would make an exception.
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
who are oppressed by the figures of beauty,
you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
we are ugly but we have the music."

And then you got away, didn't you babe...

I don't mean to suggest that I loved you the best,
I can't keep track of each fallen robin.
I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel,
that's all, I don't even think of you that often.

Words written about Janis Joplin

All of us have regrets, we are human.

She alone does not compete,
And so the world can never overcome her.

(Lao Tzu)

From a person
comes a family,
And from a family
comes a community;
From a community
comes a nation,
And from a nation
comes the world

(Lao Tzu)

Jennifer, I love that quote..words to live by indeed.

Another one that I like:
Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.
Maya Angelou

You're beautiful, but you're empty.... No one could die for you.---I really like that quote Greg.

JJ, great quotes--Have you read "Tao Te Ching"?

One of my fave verses:

Quiet the Mind
Be Still
And watch the breath of God
Rise and fall
In all things.
Allow God's breath
To be your breath;
All God's nature
To be your nature.

The nature of God
Is to love and be loved;
Your desire to love creates intention,
Intention focuses attention,

Attention illuminates understanding,
Understanding manifests forgiveness,
Forgiveness is the fountainhead
of Love.
Intend to be Love
And know death for what it is:
The inbreath of God.
---Lao Tzu

Some more quotes:

Center yourself first in Wholeness
And all the parts will be yours.
Quote from The Tao of Healing-translated by Haven Trevino

How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours.
Wayne Dyer

And finally:
You must be the change you want to see in the world.
Mahatma Gandhi
