| I was just thinking about a favorite poem, I could not recall every word but most of it...
| William Ernest Henley. 1849–1903 |
| |
| 7. Invictus |
| |
| OUT of the night that covers me, |
|
| Black as the Pit from pole to pole, |
|
| I thank whatever gods may be |
|
| For my unconquerable soul. |
|
| |
| In the fell clutch of circumstance |
5 |
| I have not winced nor cried aloud. |
|
| Under the bludgeonings of chance |
|
| My head is bloody, but unbowed. |
|
| |
| Beyond this place of wrath and tears |
|
| Looms but the Horror of the shade, |
10 |
| And yet the menace of the years |
|
| Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. |
|
| |
| It matters not how strait the gate, |
|
| How charged with punishments the scroll, |
|
| I am the master of my fate: |
15 |
|
I am the captain of my soul.
Greg

| Interesting idea, Greg. I suppose I have a "few" words I can share although it's rare that I get to write anything really fun so it will be a good opportunity to stretch that side of my writing. As far as my handicap, I will be fairly busy for awhile so you might be lucky enough to catch me in a distracted phase. And though Ma Cherie has yet to grow opposable thumbs, learn to direct her tail to the keyboard or come to really understand the human language and such, she is quite the muse for me at times. I'm sure her hilarious personality will be the inspiration for several "letters". JJ, yours was quite cute. Charlee - your letter was not only most decent but very lovely. This competition is not going to be easy, even for me. Chris may prove to be the dark horse and quite a contender - someone to watch for!! Recently this song has been on my mind and every time it starts to go through my mind and then turn on the radio, there it is. The lyrics are great but the music, oh, the music -the strings, the horns!! It's truly a classic by a classic group - Chicago. I prefer their stuff from the 70s, but they are one of the most noteable groups. In fact the lyrics are few to highlight the composition: If you leave me now, you'll take away the biggest part of me
No baby please don't go
If you leave me now, you'll take away the very heart of me
No baby please don't go
A love like ours is love that's hard to find
How could we let it slip away
We've come too far to leave it all behind
How could we end it all this way
When tomorrow comes we'll both regret
Things we said today
Cause I need you more than you'll ever know There are too many to choose from by Chicago. One more: brief but musical Now I need you
More than ever
No more cryin'
We're together
Tell me you will stay
Make me smile Lyrics to Show Me The Way :
Flying so high
Feeling so low
Fill my empty heart
Don't say no
Can I get through this night, with some lovin' to show
Won't you show me the way to go--I don't know
Won't you open your eyes
I know you really care
You see these games you play
They're just not fair
After all the good times and secrets we've shared
Won't you show me the way to go--I don't know
I wanna take my place
I wanna take my place
I wanna take my place with the loved ones
Well I still can't see how things were meant to be
Love me even for one day I'll treat you like a lady
In my heart you'll stay forever you know
Won't you show me the way to go--I don't know
Marching into your heart
Marching into your heart Jennifer

I Would Live in Your Love
I would live in your love as the sea-grasses live in the sea, Borne up by each wave as it passes, drawn down by each wave that recedes;
I would empty my soul of the dreams that have gathered in me, I would beat with your heart as it beats, I would follow your soul as it leads.
I love this poem. I hope you all enjoy! Charlee

| Chris, I have had some fantasies but football was never included. Charlee I love that poem, thank you so much for posting it. Greg keeps trying to rewrite his serious post. I think he needs inspiration. Do not let him fool you, he is highly competitive. Last night several of us got together to watch the olympics and we were most impressed by Michael Phelp's humility in such a great accomplishment. The Olympics can bring out the best in people and we saw many examples of good sportsmanship. I got up early to let the dogs out and to start the morning coffee for my friends. The mornings here are so peaceful in the country. You hear no sounds of traffic, or people or telephones. There is a soft fog like haze over the pond and occasionally you hear geese in the distance but no more. I love sunsets but a sunrise can also be a thing of beauty. There are moments in life you wish could last forever, but they never do. But O for the touch of a vanished hand, And the sound of a voice that is still! Tennyson

| Kelly that was a very nice post and yes, fantasy football is different. As Bob Dylan said, "those little dreams, they're only in your head." I also brought Incubus along and he wants to be outside with the dogs. He went out on the deck and got his fur filled with these little leaves from a honey locust tree. He noticed them in his tail and began chasing his own tail trying to get the leaves out. Ragdolls are oftentimes bred for their looks I believe. He has a great termperament. Brains I am not so sure about but his heart is pure. As one rose blooms another will die
It's always been that way
I remember the showers
But no one puts flowers
On a flower's grave ....................Tom Waits I thought of posting Frank's Wild Years by Waits but it is a song best looked up online. Greg

| I just found this and really like it.... What Is Love?
Love is a shy smile,
a sweet hello,
a soft caress...
Love is two hands entwined,
a lingering kiss,
a swelling of the heart...
Love is undeniable,
unforgettable,
unimaginable,
and what every heart yearns for...
- Sarah Ramirez - Greg, Incubus is too cute and I am sure he is smart too lol. He is just laid back and knows you will wait on him hand and foot. The dogs get along with him so great but maybe because he is like a puppy himself. He will fetch for hours and follow you around like a pup. I am glad you brought him along, but you do need another cat for companionship for him. I will help in the search. JJ

| Blues For the world
The better to see -
And big lips for the word
And Buddhahood
And death.
Touch the cup to these sad lips
Let the purple grape foam
In my gullet deep
Spread saccharine
And crimson carnadine
In my vine of veins
And shoot power
To my hand
Belly heart & head -
This Magic Carpet
Arabian World
Will take us
Easeful Zinging
Cross the sky
Singing Madrigals
To horizons of golden
Moment emptiness
Whither whence uncaring Jack Kerouac The Tense Muse at Midnight Your palace last
night in vodka
dreams
pretending I was
The King of Prussia.
You
the virgin princess
dark hair spilling
over the edge,
translating sonnets
on satin sheets.
In old darkness
I leave you
hating hotel rooms
while spending your lifetime
trying
to get the words
right. Scot Young Incubus does need a companion. Kelly

| I have looked for another ragdoll but so far no luck. Persians are close in temperament so that would be my second choice. I am suddenly feeling pressure to add a fourth pet to my menagerie but cats are easy. You just feed them regularly and let them do anything they want and all is well. One does not own a cat, they tend to own you. Guys are like dogs. They keep coming back. Ladies are like cats. Yell at a cat one time...they're gone. I hate small towns because once you've seen the cannon in the park there's nothing else to do. Miami Beach is where neon goes to die. There are no dirty words, only dirty minds. Lenny Bruce said these things. PS I have a hard time naming an animal, when I get a new cat I will ask for suggestions. Greg | | | |

| Chris, don't let me down! I think you have a great deal to express and could write a beautiful letter that would melt all of us gals' hearts! Great quotes, G. I don't have anything pet related, but there's a band out of Dallas my best friend took me to see ages ago and they play them here all the time on the radio and in concert - Old 97s. For a band that I didn't know any music of, it was one of the most fun concerts I've been to. It's up there with Better Than Ezra (at Trees, Deep Ellum in Dallas) for best live show ever for me. Stadium shows are never what they're cracked up to be, in my book. I like small venue - intimate. This is a new song and reminded me of when we chatted about dancing.....MONTHS ago! Je l'adore! Underneath the foreign stars
In a foreign place where they don’t love you
I do care,
In the pale moonlight
Your eyes are wide
And the band plays…
Everybody wants you
And he takes your hand tenderly
And he whispers
Sweet surrender, nothing
How he feels about girls like you
Your flip flop smiles,
And your big blue eyes
On vacation
Dance with me into the ocean
Roll with me into the sea
Don’t tell me the world is in trouble
Do you want to dance with me?
Go, changes hands as the big waves
Crash and dream don’t die
But I do
Where were you when I needed you
Right now
The telephone just rings,
I’m gonna find you…
Dance with me, into the ocean
Roll with me, into the sea
Don’t tell me the world is in trouble
Do you want to dance with me, oh
do you want to dance with me?
Underneath the foreign sun
With a foreign man who is gone and almost forgotten
Take everything you see
And remember us and wonder,
If you will be forgiven…
Dance with me, into the ocean
Roll with me, into the sea
Don’t tell me the world is in trouble
Don’t tell me the world is in trouble
Dance with me, into the ocean
Roll with me, into the sea
Don’t tell me the world is in trouble
Do you want to dance with me
Do you want to dance with me, oh
Do you want to dance with me? I promise I will have some time to get to writing "a letter". Greg is right, funny is tough. I think JJ won that one on her first try! LOL Good work! ~J

| I am bound to be right sometimes Jen. I did get around to writing a letter or two but I do not like them so far. One day before the end of the month I will have one. Ivet has an excuse since she broke a finger in a mountain bike mishap. I would limit her in the use of Q,Z, and X from what I recall. (pinky finger on left hand). Those law inforcement types are a tough breed though and I bet she suffers through the pain enough for a contribution. A Dylan song I like.... Well, your railroad gate, you know I just can't jump it Sometimes it gets so hard, you see I'm just sitting here beating on my trumpet With all these promises you left for me But where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Well, I waited for you when I was half sick Yes, I waited for you when you hated me Well, I waited for you inside of the frozen traffic When you knew I had some other place to be Now, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Well, anybody can be just like me, obviously But then, now again, not too many can be like you, fortunately.
Well, six white horses that you did promise Were fin'lly delivered down to the penitentiary But to live outside the law, you must be honest I know you always say that you agree But where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Well, I don't know how it happened But the river-boat captain, he knows my fate But ev'rybody else, even yourself They're just gonna have to wait.
Well, I got the fever down in my pockets The Persian drunkard, he follows me Yes, I can take him to your house but I can't unlock it You see, you forgot to leave me with the key Oh, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Now, I been in jail when all my mail showed That a man can't give his address out to bad company And now I stand here lookin' at your yellow railroad In the ruins of your balcony Wond'ring where you are tonight, sweet Marie.

| Ok I will attempt a serious love note post. I am writing extemperaniously without help of spell check or grammar check so please allow for that. Remembrance It was so long ago that I first met my Emily. My most vivid recollection is of a picnic in a small park, it had begun to rain and we sought shelter in a small stone building that was missing the window frames and doors. It was in there we found a small round stone that through the years had become dislodged from its purchase in one of the walls. Emily picked it up and said she would add it to her rock garden as a remembrance of the occasion. The thought touched me and I leaned over to kiss her for the very first time in hopes that it would indeed be a special occasion. We married but were never blessed with children and in their place we adopted a young puppy that we named Corky. We loved him as if he were our child and he lived a long happy life and it broke our hearts when he finally passed away. We buried him under an oak tree in the back yard and on his grave we placed the same round stone from the little stone building as a remembrance. A few weeks later the loneliness got the better of us and we again adopted a young puppy and being set in our ways, we named him Corky also. This tradition went on for five dogs and they were all just strays from a shelter but we gave each of them a good home and when the next Corky passed away, we moved the stone to celebrate the life of another wonderful dog. Every couple of years we would go back to the small park with Corky and let him play as we visited the old stone building where we first kissed and learned about love. As a tradition we would touch the small cavity that once held the stone we had kept all those years and now rested as a marker on the latest Corky's grave. Finally the last Corky died and it was as if the spark of life left my sweet Emily also and she followed soon after. After all those years, I was left alone with only a stone, a remembrance of what had been. It will be my time soon and I will be joining Emily but before I go I must make one last trip to the small stone building where my love was born. I will return the stone to its resting place and behind it I will leave this note... Whoever finds this stone, please know that it is not your ordinary stone. It is a stone that marked the beginning of a wonderful life with a woman named Emily. It is the stone that marked the passing of so many great dogs that we called Corky. Please treasure it as we did and may it grant you the blessings that I held for so many years. It is not just a stone, it is a remembrance. Greg | | | |

| I agree. Very moving, Greg and your spelling was pretty darn perfect! It's nice to see my competition beforehand. It's like going last in the gymnastics all around - I get to see what I need to beat. This will be tough. I haven't been in much of a writing mood - seeing as I write all day. So be patient. Inspiration takes time.
Welcome back Halle!

| Ok I just erased my latest effort. Greg this is not fair!!!! You take an object like a stone and write something like that.???? Uggggggggghhhhhhhh. WELL done, darn it!!!!!! (I am cussing as I write this and thinking my efforts now look like a third grader wrote it lol.) I am going to have to resurrect OLD YELLER to win this thing.

| Greg I loved what you wrote!!! I do agree with JJ though, this is making it tough on the rest of us. It could have been written more like a love note but then it ended with a small note. The love was then evident and yes I did cry. There are not many who could turn such a simple thing as a stone into such a fine story. I need to rethink my plan for a love note. You do know how to touch people, that has always been obvious. Kelly | | | |

| You all are most kind, now I feel bad for not putting more effort into the post. Cacky (Carolyn) you are most welcome to post an entry, but If you do not, would you like to tabulate the votes? People could email you here and you can announce the winner Sept. 1 if you like. It is only one vote per person and I doubt you would get more than six or seven emails. Now that my post it out of the way, I wait to see who will post next. JJ good luck digging up Old Yeller lol, that was funny. Greg | | | |
