We need signatures on our petition to allow pets in condos and other types of association-run housing.  Please go to www.petsincondos.org and follow the link to the petition in the upper left.

Increasing numbers of signatures will help us get grant money and also , in our experience, really does influence legislators.

Members of this list will like the Health Benefits section and the fun page on our web site.

Citizens FOR Pets in Condos www.petsincondos.org is a 501-c3 tax exempt private operating foundation dedicated to increasing acceptance of companion animals in condos and other types of association-run housing.  We educate the public about the health benefits of having animal companions and also advocate for responsible pet ownership/guardianship.  Our motto:  “creating a win-win situation for both people & pets.”

I own a duplex and the last two tenants, the first one was there for 7 yrs. and the second one for only a yr. both had pets. The carpet smelled of cat urine from the first tenant, and the second tenant also slipped a cat in and also a puppy who never went out, only used the pee pads. So, even though i have two quite large dogs I don't think owners should have to take tenants with pets. IF my pets had left a urine smell on a carpet i would have offered to replace it = that's called pet responsibility in my book and unfortunately not everyone is that way.

In my experience renting, I always gave a $2000-$3000 deposit. That should cover replacing a carpet in a rental unit (which usually don't have the greatest quality carpets to begin with).

Volunteering for a rescue, it's been heartbreaking to see the animals abandoned because of the mortgage crisis. The numbers of animals in shelters this year has been much higher. Countless are dying. I recently heard a statistic that 1 in 10 houses in the US are in foreclosure. That's an astronomical number of people, many of whom have pets, who are seeking rentals. With all the other losses in their lives, many people don't make it a priority to find a place where they can have a pet. They just drop the dog or cat at a county shelter. In my county, the dogs and cats are being killed as soon as they came into the shelters. The overcrowding was just too great.

If someone changes their mind and comes back for their pet the next day, the dog or cat is already dead. It's just tragic. But it's seriously selfish and heartless for a pet owner to abandon their poor, defenseless animal in the first place.

Worse are the people who leave their animals in the foreclosed house. No or little food and water. They don't even leave the toilet seat up for the poor animals to drink. Realtors are coming into foreclosed homes, finding dead or half dead dogs and cats. Some of the rescue volunteers I know have tried to help animals they hear about found in these situations.

I'll do anything I can to help make more places available to take pets.
