I am the only human in my household with 4 dogs (ages 9, 8, 7 and 16 mos) and 7 cats.   I work Mon-Fri 8:15 a to 4:45 p and usually go straight home and am home in the evenings.  Saturdays and Sundays I spend from about 10 a to 3 p helping my elderly mom.  I find myself not being as social as I could because I feel I should be home with my pets, after all I made the commitment of having them in my life for the length of their lives.

My question to you is what do you think the minimum amount of time is to spend with pets?  I understand about their basic needs of food, exercise and pottying...I'm referring to companionship time.  In working with rescues I despise the excuse of "I'm not home enough" when folks turn in their dogs but maybe in some cases it's valid.

Thanks for your input!

There is really no SET amount of how much time you should be spending with your animals. You dont have to spend a lot of time with them you just need to make sure you let them know that they are loved. Before bed time, maybe take a few minutes to brush each cat for a min and give them plenty of pets. A little time here and there to play with them is another way, if you dont feel like brushing them. As for the dogs, if it is possible, maybe take them all on a long long walk once a day or a few times a week(at least once). Thats one way to bond with them and most all dogs love a good walk. Most animals are happy with a min. show of affection. Some require a little more but most are pretty ok. Even if when you get home, all you do is pick up each cat, give them a kiss or two, maybe a few pets as well, that works perfectly fine. The dogs, maybe each a little treat and a good boy/girl. Even if you just let them all sit in the room while you are watching TV @ night before you go to bed or durring the day a little bit, they will be perfectly content with that. Dogs are a little more social than cats, so they would prob enjoy that a little more than the cats would. If you have any more questions, let me know and maybe I can help. Good luck and I hope this helps!!!
