I have had my german shepard-hound mix since he was a puppy. He is very good around people but we didn't socialize him well with other dogs. I recently took him to a dog run to let him play with other dogs. The other dogs tried to provoke him by jumping on his back or licking his face but he kept avoiding them and running away. He even showed his teeth once- something I have never seen him do. He seemed more interested in the pet owners then the dogs. He is know 3 years old and I am wondering if it is too late to get him to play with other dogs or if I should bring him back to the dog run more often. Any ideas/opinions? Thanks!

My dog is an american eskimo and they tend to be shy around people.. He likes to be with other dogs as long as they don't touch him. He hangs out with them but doesn't interact with them, and he will growl and snarl at them if they jump on him. He's 5 yrs and doesn't look like he'll change. His doggie friends accept him anyway!!

Sporte, you might have a chance of getting him to socialize with other dogs, since he hasn't shown much aggression towards them. I'm not an expert, but you can probably find some info on socializing him online. Starting with short frequent exposure that gets him used to other dogs without getting him agitated might help.

Good luck!

Dogs dont have to have other dog friends in order to be happy. If your dog isn't fond of other dogs - No sweat. he gets the fun of enjoying play time with you all to himself.

Have you tried emailing the dog whisperer?  You can reach him at his website cesarmillaninc.com

Sounds like your pup was overwhelmed going from no other dogs to a dog park where he got jumped on and had multiple dogs milling around him. Showing his teeth doesn't sound like aggression in this case, but rather his way of saying 'back off, I'm not enjoying this.' Dog parks/runs can be very overwhelming to many dogs. If you truly want to see how your dog interacts with other dogs, then maybe asking a friend (who has a mellow, not pushy dog) to go on walks together. See how your dog reacts. If he likes the dog then set up some dog play dates but if not, don't sweat it, not all dogs are comfortable around other dogs. I had a husky who was the same way = )

Melissa's answer seems to be right on, and just what I was thinking. Meeting one well tempered dog, maybe walking on leash then letting off leash if possible to see how they do. Even well socialized dogs don't always do well the first time at a new dog park, where other dogs have already established themselves.
