I just rescued a bluetick coonhound and would love to hear from anyone who is familiar with the breed. We've been feeding her for 1 1/2 years and only yesterday were able to catch her. She has been living in the woods and was probably left behind by hunters. I hope to be able to integrate her into the pack (great pyrennes, komondor and shihtzu ) Any suggestions would be appreciated.   Jan

As a rule, it seems most hounds can be pretty stubborn. How is she doing so far, since catching her?

From what I've seen, it seems easier to integrate an animal when you have a pack that is already well-behaved and trained. Is she aggressive at all towards you or your dogs?

She is very calm but she has just been spayed and isn't active yet. I have to keep her apart from the others due to her being in heat and even with the surgery she will attract male dogs for 2 weeks. I have a neutered male (komondor ) and she is not allowed contact.

My other dogs are well trained  but my male is alpha so I couldn't bring another alpha male into the pack. She has shown no aggression at the vets or with any of us...a good sign.

If it was me, I'd wait until she was healed, and then introduce her to the alpha male first. Once he accepts her, the rest will follow. Or that's how it should work at least... Dogs, like any animal, can be unpredictable though. Best of luck with your new hound! Hope everything works out! Keep us updated on here.

Yesterday I introduced Sugar (shih tzu) to her and she showed no aggression or prey drive so today my sister brought over her Australian Shepherd and we walked them together. She is curious but again rather laid back although she enjoyed her walk (Both dogs are female) In another week she will be able to meet Jazz and Beela..looks very promising...Jan

She is healed from the surgery and has finally joined the family. She is being very playful , inviting others to play with her. We've had no accidents in the house but then her natural instinct is to potty in privacy outside. Everyday day we see more of her personality emerging and she has learned the house rules from watching the other guys. She was at my sister's for the first week and was facinated with the TV...she'd just sit and stare at it. Now she is home with me she keeps looking for the TV and I don't own one. I think that's why she interacts with us....she's bored Jan

The only real problem with her is her extreme fear of men. The vet and farrier came for the donkeys and she was petrified. Both love animals and are not the least bit threatening but she was litterally terrified. The vet said she was probably abused by a man and may never be completely comfortable around them. This shouldn't be a big problem because I'm a widow and live alone. I just hate to see her like that.....Jan
