My sister-in-law called me the other day and she found a stray cat in her
yard so she took it to local vet. and had it scanned and of course it was not chipped and had no collar.

The cat was very sick & they would not look at the cat without her paying the bill and she is working two jobs and was unable to pay the bill they turned her away.(the office use to be a private vet. who sold to a coporation & they are collecting money through jars at the local stores for animals who need care in office, yet they turned this cat away.)

Well I told her to bring it to my house and we would take it to the no kill shelter where I got my dogs and one of my cats.

I did call head but no one returned my call we walked in with the cat and the person there was very rude.

She told me I should have called first and I told her I did her reply was she was very busy and didn't have time to check the calls.

We tried to show her the cat and she didn't even want to look at the cat.

She said that the cat was not found in her area and looked in a book and handed us a paper who was to be called for the cat to go to there facility.

We kept trying to tell her the cat was dying, and she kept telling us that we couldn't leave the cat there.

My sister-in- law took the cat home and a neighbor came and cailmed the cat and said the cat was old and aways looked like that.

The cat was very thin all of its ribs were showing,as was its entire back bone, it had diarrhea.

Now I have an 18yr.old cat and yes he has lost muscle tone but other then that he is in perfect health.

Around 4:30pm someone else from the shelter called me to see why I called and told her what happened and she seemed like she was sorry about what happened I asked to speak to someone in charge,

The person told me that you can't just walk into the shelter with a stray you have to own the animal and they will make the desicion if they will take it or not?

She said they take animals from other shelters and the ones people  give up and try to place them so strays should go to local shelters and I told her the local shelter was a kill shelter and it didn't seem to make a difference that the cat would probaly die!

Again by telling her the cat would die it didn't seem to make a difference.

She told me they basically pick and choose what comes in that shelter so they to me are not there for the animals thank god mine to them were adoptable or god knows where they would bi?

I got my two dogs and one cat from this shelter and after this I defineltly have a different opion of this shelter and will think twice about the next  time they ask for donation!!

What do you think should have happened in this situtation?

Wow!  What I want to know is what happened to the poor cat.  Also, I hope you didn't let it near your cat incase it has feline distemper or some other disease that is catchy.

I agree with you that I would never go to this shelter again.  Unfortunately people who work with animals all the time get insensitive.  I've seen it happen when i used to work at a vet clinic.  Even vets turn away potential patients, or sick patients if they don't have money.  It's all about the money.

It's too bad this happened to you.  Please let us know what happened, ok?

Bring the cat to a vet again. Ask them if they have a payment plan where you can pay a little amount each week and/or month. When you refused the first time to pay because of money shortage on your part, the vet's hands seemed to be tied. You should have requested that you would be willing to pay the bill in installments -- if you showed some good will, they probably would have taken the cat. When in an emergency, such as the one you described regarding seeing the cat's ribs, etc., there is no time to look for free service -- it is just more difficult to find, unless you really luck out. I really hope you were able to save this cat because it seems that she/he needed medical attention. Do not worry about the money -- I'm sure you would have been able to handle $10 per week or maybe even per month. This would have been well-spent money in the long run. Once again, I want to hear what happened to this sweetie.

It sounds like a very horrible experience for you to go through, all to help a poor little animal.  The people at those shelters should not have been rude to you.  I have worked at a shelter, and understand why staff gets insensitive, but it is still inexcusable.  First, they should have explained to you the reasons why they have those strange sounding policies.  Some people will take someone elses animal and try to turn them in.  Sounds crazy but it happens more often than you would think.  They often lie and say they "found" it, but then it will turn out to be a neighbors, or a parents animal they just don't like.  Second, the rule about location has to do with giving the proper owners the opportunity to find their animal in the shelter of their own region.

That said, there is something called the "Good Sam" policy.  A person finds an injured animal, or stray that looks unhealthy, this policy allows for the treatment of the animal, and the funds come out the account just for such instances.  This is through the ASPCA, and they have an emergency vet or hospital that will take such animals at no charge to the finder.  This allows for people to feel more comfortable helping strays, instead of worrying about getting footed the bill.   So, next time, ask about their "Good Sam" policy when you find an injured stray.  Hope this helps!

I'm appalled that a shelter would refuse any animal. So many animals are abandoned in cruel ways. All shelters should be encouraging of anyone who would willingly surrender an animal instead of just leaving it at the side of the road.

There's just no excuse for a shelter having such rude and uncaring people. I'm sorry for that poor cat with an irresponsible owner.

I don't know where you live, but I volunteer at the Michigan Humane Society Detroit Shelter, & I can tell you we NEVER turn animals away. We are not, unfortunately, a no-kill shelter & if an animal comes to us as a stray, by law, we have to hold it 4 days before it can be evaluated UNLESS the vet determines that the animal is in pain & can't be saved, then we can euthanize the poor thing. We do the very best we can & you will never find a more dedicated group of people. No one likes euthanaisa, but we're bursting at the seams with animals, & we have to sometimes have to make a decision. It really sucks too, but if people would just be responsible pet owners, this wouldn't be happening - more so now with the economy.

I am so sorry to hear about how difficult it was for you to properly care for that cat. It's a bit ludicrous to think that in just trying to do the right thing & help the kitty you came across so much animosity and lack of caring!

We have found strays and luckily we do have a good no kill shelter in our area. That being said, it's difficult to get them to take a stray. They & all the other shelters are being overwhelmed by all of the pets being dumped by folks losing their homes.

So if anyone can, please take a foster in from your local shelter. It will mean 1 more spot open for an animal that desperately needs a chance.

-> Sabrinacatdancing - There doesn't seem to be any hard & fast info on the good sam policy. The info I did find was related to how to find good Samaritan help:

http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/what_you_can_do_if_you_are_having_trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html

There was a link www.goodsamfund.org, but it appears to be defunct & just a holding spot for links till someone starts it back up.
