Any ideas on getting a year and a half old Rottie socialized. He is afraid of strangers and especially men and children.  He is better but really acts scared when there are lots of people around. He is fine with dogs and cats..and is a big Mamma's boy.

The socialization peroid for dogs ends at the latest 16 weeks old! At this point, getting the dogs comfortable around people is what your goal is. Sounds like your dog may be a bit fearful. This can be due to the lack of socialization early on, or just plain weak nerves due to genetics. Since I haven't seen the dog, I don't want to be unfair to the dog. Do you have control when distractions are near?Ultimatly, the dog needs to obey you in any situation. You can try to turn your friends into "treat machines" when they are around the dog. I would just have them drop the treats where the dog see them. I would NOT force affection by having your friends feed the dog treats. This process is very slow, and may get a percentage better.

I have a standard poodle that would run every time I said " sit" This dog was sick and abused when I decided to adopt him. I clicker trained him to be comfortable around me, now 18 months later he approaches my guests as well as sits for his treats and food and praise. He's about 8 or 9 yrs. old

Good evening! I have a 3yr old rottie whom I had to do some extra socialization with since he's not a "run up and lick the stranger" kind of dog = ). A lot of obedience training has helped with his focus (when he's paying attention to me then he isn't concerned about what's going on around him) and also exposes him to other dogs and handlers in a less threatening manner. My rottie is very well behaved in public but that doesn't mean that he likes for other people to approach him & start petting him. I can have a close-up conversation with a complete stranger and he will gladly sit and stay right next to me, but he doesn't want that person to bend down to pet him. I used to think that his lack of fondness for strangers was due to something I was at fault for...but now I understand that it's just his personality and I'm okay with that. Hanging out with other rottie people has really helped me to understand my dog better and they've been able to help with with issues like socializaion. Our local ARC group would dole out the hot dog pieces and my dog would mingle with them to sniff out the treats. No one starred at him or approached him, but when he approached them calmly then he'd get a bit of the treat. I made hot dogs the extra special socialization treat and now when I have workers or delivery people coming to my home I get out the hot dogs and he runs to greet them at the door.

Maybe finding a local ARC group in your area or a good trainer who has experience with rotties would help to lead you in the right direction with your rottie. Good luck & pls keep us posted = )
