Cat Killer SentencedA big win yesterday in the fight for justice for abused animals. Thank you, Judge Spurlock!

"An East Boston man was sentenced yesterday to 2 1/2 years in prison by a Suffolk Superior Court judge who had been urged by cat lovers to impose a tougher sentence on Luigi Epifania for killing a cat and setting its corpse on fire in 2007.

In letters sent to Superior Court Judge Charles T. Spurlock, five cat lovers demanded the maximum sentence of five years in jail for the June 13, 2007, attack. One letter warned that Epifania could be on his way to becoming a serial killer."

That is so sad I don't know how people can be so cruel to innocent animals. He deserved a tougher sentence for sure~

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

It's a shame humans can be so cruel to animals. It's not like animals do the same to us. They only do it out of instinct "fight or flight" or to eat! Not because the animal may find it funny or amusing! People like that disgust me and I'm happy he got sentenced!!!

YES!!!! Thank you Judge Spurlock. Now if we could only get all judges in all states to hand down tough penalties maybe the madness would end for our furry friends who have no voice but ours.

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

Anyone that finds humor and entertainment in causing an animal to suffer is not wired right! These people are, also, a danger to our children and people in general.
In my opinion, the world would be better off without them,
I think we should send Judge Spurlock a letter of thanks. At least, if the sentences become firmer it sends the message that this behavior is NOT ok; not acceptable in a civilized society.

I am sorry but I believe that time served is never a good enough punishment, I believe he should have been treated just the way he killed that poor, innocent, defenseless, harmless cat. An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth...

There is no viable excuse for cruelty to animals or other people.
What's next on his agenda...children?

No human being would do such cruelty to an animal. It is, however, people who are disgusting enough to perpetrate such a heartless act. I hope the cat did not suffer. I hope Luigi Epifania does for his crime.

All I can say is, it's about time! It is a proven fact that anyone who is cruel to animals will be the same to a helpless person. As Gandhi said, A society is judged by the way it treats animals.

I also believe an eye for an eye. Sad part he will come out to do it again and sooner or later he will become a serial killer
Sentenced for 2 1/2 years only. probably be out even sooner for so called ( good behavior)
He is a monster. However, I am glad to hear he will be in jail.(hope the other convicts get him)

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

How can you trust anyone that treats an animal like that to be a upstanding citizen in your community. I sure wouldn't want him in my neighborhood, even after 2 1/2 yrs in jail. I wouldn't let a child molester in my neighborhood why a animal torturer. Hang the SOB save us all the time and money to support this idiot.

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

The comment his attorney made was really stupid..."We think more of animals these days than people". Well yeah, duhhh...animals don't do that kind of stuff. The horrible part was that this jerk said he used to feed that cat. So the poor cat walked up to him, trusting it would be treated well, and got that. If his sort aren't eliminated they should at least be neutered, we sure don't need that in the gene pool, we have enough weirdos now.

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

In the future I hope out judges continue to do the right thing in animal abuse cases whether anyone else goes to speak out for it or not. Respect for all living things needs to be taught to children early on. Children who are abused grow up and abuse helpless victims, animal and human, often those that trust them the most. This person no doubt has suffered abuse himself at one time. Abusers are damaged and defective personality types that need careful consideration and attention from our law makers and law enforcers. We need to pay full attention to the research being done on these kinds of psychopaths. These people are usually damaged for life and their crimes only escalate in severity.

THANK YOU JUDGE SPURLOCK FOR DOING WHAT IS RIGHT. THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES HAVE NO VOICE AND NEED US TO TALK FOR THEM AND PLEAD FOR HELP AND JUSTICE. I WISH WE COULD DO TO THE CRIMINALS WHAT THEY DO TO THE ANIMALS. I HAVE TRAVELED TO MANY OTHER COUNTRIES AND THEIR JUSTICE IS MUCH STRICTER AND HARDER AND INFLICT THEIR CRIMINALS SO THEY SUFFER AS THEY HAVE CAUSED THE ANIMALS TO SUFFER. SO I ALSO HOPE THIS TERRIBLE MAN MEETS LOTS OF ANIMALS LOVERS IN PRISON SO HE WILL KNOW PAIN LIKE THIS POOR CAT SUFFERED!!

By CAROL on  Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

Whatever punishment this "B" gets isn't enough. He should have the maximum prison sentence handed down, all of his belongings given to an animal charity (and I do mean everything he has - house, car, clothing, money, etc), he should be registered as an animal abuser, and somewhere along the lines he should be made to "pay" for his crime by the other prison inmates. There are some things that even prisoners won't put up with. And finally, lawyers to feel the need to defend these types of slim should enjoy having their tires on their cars slashed at least on a month.

I AM TRULY HAPPY HE IS GOING TO JAIL. BUT HE SHOULD DO MORE TIME. I THINK THAT PEOPLE THAT ABUSE ANIMALS SHOULD HAVE THE SAME THING DONE TO THEM. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, IT WILL BE A CHILD . AN ANIMAL ABUSER WONT STOP AT ONLY AN ANIMAL.

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

Unfortunately, we just had a similar incident on Long Island. We sent out a petition for letter writing and the letters were hand carried to the courtroom. I'm not sure the outcome, but I do think letter writing helps emphasize the brutality and severity of animal abuse and how it DOES lead to abuse of humans.

Personally, I think that the concept of "an eye for an eye..." should definitely be applied to these psychos who abuse and murder innocent animals! I'd like to see this monster strangled and have his body burned to ashes on national television! I and my three kitties would certainly cheer for the appropriate justice meted out, as well as for the fact that by eliminating the perpetrator from the planet AND the justice system, the poor taxpayers don't have to support him in luxury for the next few years! Problem solved - PERMANENTLY!

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

And then, in Canada, two teenagers got slapped on the wrist for microwaving a cat! OMG! They also did a lot of damage to the cat owner's home.

"But youth court Judge Shauna Miller .....ordered that the boys serve one year of probation, during which they must perform 100 hours of community service, must see a therapist, and each pay $250 restitution to cover the deductible the victims paid to their insurance company, which otherwise covered the cost of property damage. A curfew was also imposed for the probationary period. The boys must be home between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. The family of one boy has two months to get rid of a dog recently bought for the boy's younger siblings.

The psychological assessments were not able to determine a motive. "We are perplexed," Crown prosecutor John Laluk said. "There is certainly no evidence of mental illness." The two boys, both 15 at the time, have admitted that on the first night they put holes in walls, smashed the family's belongings, and stole a guitar and a paintball gun. When they returned the next night, they broke more things, causing up to $25,000 in damage. Then the two boys grabbed the family's cat, named Princess, and stuffed it in a microwave."

Not only are these boys brainless, the judge seems to be brainless, too! And the boys are "not mentally ill"? Huh? What could be the definition of mental illness then?

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

Unfortunately society in general will always have to deal with these future serial killers in the making, but there is too much leniency with animal cruelty sentences. People like this have no feelings or empathy for others so they will do it again and again for a bigger thrill, only being behind bars or death sentence will ever stop them.

By Barb on  Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

I just can't understand why anyone harming an animal doesn't get much harsher punishment, Recently there were two boys that put a cat in a microwave and listened to it scream for 10 long minutes until it was cooked.
We have people in positions that are supposed to listen to us, we the public are crying for tougher sentencing for horrible crimes like this
Why arn't you all listening???
When I hear of something like this, the first thing that comes into my mind when I wake up and the last thing in my mind when I go to sleep, it haunts me constantly

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

I am upset that people would abuse animals like this. I have several cats, and love animals period. I would never hurt them, and I would certainly not put them in harm's way. These people who are abusing animals are pyscho, but are definitely not wired correctly. Plus their upbringing has alot to do with it. And the kids that microwaved the cat? They are not mentally ill??? Hmmmm, personally they are mentally ill, and where were the parents in this home? Who was watching them? Who was reprimanding them???? Obivously no one was around to watch them. I think it is a great idea for the person to be "tortured" the same way the animal was, an eye for an eye. I would be the first one in line to start the process, for all of the animals that were/are tortured by bad humans. I can't watch Animal Cops on Animal Planet, because it is too emotional for me. I am an extreme animal lover, and would never do anything to harm my cats. They give unconditional love, and at times, alot better than people do. So let's start a new revolution on animal abusers and make them pay for what they do to these defenseless animals who can't fight for themselves, or let us know to stop hurting them.

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

I totally agree with some of the other comments...and this is a sick man and needs help as well as being punished to the fullest extent of the law and NOT a SLAP on the hand!!!!.
Most serial killers started out torturing and killing small animals.
The punishment should fit the crime. When an animal is tortured for fun and amusement of others...I truly believe that if the person is caught he should have the same kind of torture inflicted upon him/her!! I'll bet if that was the punishment for torturing and killing animals...people might think twice before doing such sick things to such loving creatures.

Greenburg said "In this day and age we like pets more than people"....Well Mr. Greenburg, this is exactly WHY we like animals more than some people...because of whacko's like this!!!

THANK YOU JUDGE SPURLOCK for doing the right thing!!

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

I am so glad to see so many animal supporters are out there. There is no excuse for animal cruelty and the punishments need to be stiffer. Sometimes I wish I was a judge because it would be an eye for an eye. It sickens me how people get enjoyment out of torturing innocent creatures who will provide you with unconditional love given the chance. This guy is a sick SOB and I hope the other inmates have a field day with him!

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

I agree with everyone here!! I appreciate what the judge has done...it should have been longer. I believe in "an eye for an eye" but our society has become so soft and politically correct that it's sickening at times. I have 8 cats myself and if anyone harmed them in any way I will be writing things like this from the prison library. I would have no problem putting a bullet in one's head for doing such atrocities, especially those boys in Canada. But I think I would give them a taste of their own medicine first. People like this do not deserve to walk around enjoying their freedom. And my family wonders why I can't stand the human race. Give me a cat any day!!!

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

His lawyer says he's not a "monster", that he was having a little problem with his addiction to heroin. Yea, I'm sure the cat's in his life are responsible for giving him the dope and the forcing him to use the stuff.
The thing that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside is that the hard core inmates not only hold child killers at the bottom of the system but animal killers also. I know this monster will be treated with the same respect he gave the animal he killed. I will look forward to the light in the night sky being that of his stomped body being the flame that lights it up.
I also know that there is a special place in hell for people like this-probably a gang of cats as heroin dealers and him needing a fix.

My cat and dogs are my best friends. They don't talk about me behind my back, syphon gas out of my car or steal my money.
I empathize with all the above letters and in part, agree with them. But remember, if we do what he did, we are the same as him.
Some states now have a law forbidding a convicted animal abuser from ever having an animal in his possession again. That's a good step in the right direction, like child molesters have to register and report their whereabouts.
Thank all the above folks who wrote in and gave a voice to a helpless animal.

I do NOT believe in "an eye for an eye", as it's that sort of thinking that is responsible for many similar acts. Yes, punish him to the fullest extent of the law. Hate him and scorn him and cry for the life he took. But please, never think that more killing would solve anything.

Years ago I arrested a cat killer, he would catch them then tie them up and bury them in the ground with only the head showing. Then trouble you (13) would run over them with a lawn mower. The judge slapped his wrist and let him go,his father was a retired military man.
15 yrs later he was tried for murdering a young lady, he had told her he was a photographer. He tortured her to death, along with the other unspeakable acts. Now he sits in Flordias death row, waiting for the electric chair.
No one cared for the poor cats and no one cared for the poor girl.

Yes, tougher sentencing regulations need to be created for persons found guilty of anyway abusing defenseless precious animals. He got off too easy! People like him are a menace to society and deserve to be separated from those who respect and cherish all life forms. Hopefully, tougher sentencing will be enforced as those with the power to condemn, realize that it's just a grave enough crime to be compared to crimes against people and properties. Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

The judge was wrong about one thing. He said, "Drugs are his problem." I don't think drugs are his biggest problem. There are lots of drug addicts who don't torture and murder innocent animals. His real problem is that he is an evil, violent person, and that will never change. Thank you, judge, for sentencing him to prison. We all need to continue lobbying our legislators to pass stronger laws against animal abuse, and our judges to enforce them.

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

We're on the right track. I agree that the sentence should have been harsher. A murderer is a murderer, species notwithstanding. We have liberals who cry out against cruel and unusual punishment of prisoners, even murderers. Well, what do they consider the torture and murder of a cat, dog, other animal, or a person? This murderer and others like him need a taste of their own medicine, so to speak. There must be a way to teach them the pain of torture and murder without sinking to their level. Thanks Judge Spurlock for getting the ball rolling!

His attorney needs to realize that animals are defenseless and for someone to intentionally hurt an animal is in truth the animal. I was a single parent of three children and we always had cats and dogs. I raised them to never abuse a woman, a child or an animal, in other words do not abuse at all. Some people just have a violent nature regardless and drugs are no excuse for violence. The one letter writer who said that he was on his way to becoming a serial killer was dead on. Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

Often, this serves as a trial run for bigger and "better" crimes such as abducting and murdering children and women. It is unlikely that psychological "help" will actually enable this defective individual to become a productive and socially accepted member of society. Too bad he didn't do this in Texas. They don't fool around with these types.

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

I live in New Hampshire, but sometimes I get the Boston Globe, as I am originally from the Boston area, and remeber e-mailing the author of the article regarding this! Luigi got off way too easy in my opinion!!! But at least he is being punished. He should be made to work in an animal shelter leaning cages after someone in prison claws him. What gives him or anyone else the right to mistreat an animal and blame it on drugs or anything else??????? What was he planning to do next and use drugs as his exuse?? Mothers, hide your children!!!! Thanks to the judge!!!!! And may he be thinking about what his final judgement days will be like, as I believe that there is a special place in hell for people like him!!!!!!!!11

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

THANKYOU KUDO'S TO THE JUDGE, BUT HE SHOULD HAVE GIVEN HIM A TOUGHER SENTENCE. OR OFF WITH HIS HEAD AND CASTRATE HIM ALSO. I HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE CRUEL TO ANIMALS OR ABUSE THEM. REGARDLESS OF THE LAME EXCUSES THEY GIVE FOR DOING IT. THERE IS NO EXCUSE. THEY SHOULD EXPERIENCE THE PAIN THEY INFLICT ON THE POOR ANIMAL. THIS WOULD INCLUDE POACHERS AND TROPHY HUNTERS TOO.

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

For this piece of slime to only get 2 1/2 years plus time off for time served is absolutely outrageous. This animal needs to be put in a cage and left there on display so the rest of society can see just exactly what type of mosnter he truly is. That poor unsuspecting cat trusted him and then he goes and does THAT?! No 2 1/2 years plus time served IS NOT JUSTICE, IT IS A TRAVESTY!!!!!!!

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

To the judge in Canada that let the two boys off on probation with community service AFTER they ADMUITTED that they deliberately put the family cat in the microwave and then stood by for 10 MINS while the poor helpless thing screamed for it's life while it was being cooked alive, WHAT IN GOD'S NAME WERE YOU THINKING these boys need to be an example of the one thing I do agree with in regard to the judges decision is that these two monsters NEVER BE ALLOWED TO HAVE OR BE AROUND ANY ANIMAL EVER AGAIN END OF STORY!!!!!!!!! I hope for all of their sakes that they do not have any "encounters" with any real animal lovers because if they do then the person or persons should not be held responsible or accountable for their actions. For these types of prople to be walking among us is a frightening thought, because if they will do something that horrible to a helpless and defenseless animal one can only imaging what they would do to a person. Then for his "mouthpiece" to make the kind of remarks he made was utter stupidity(on the attorney's part)he just proved that he has no credibility whatsoever especially if he is willing to defend the likes of this man. Herion addiction or not that does not excuse his actions, the best thing for him would be chemical castration. Same for those boys in Canada they should also be chemically castrated so they will be able to get beyond their monsterous deeds, in fact they should be forced to look at a picture of the cat AFTER THEY WERE FINISHED for the rest of their lives so they will NEVER forget what they did.

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

I am SPEECHLESS and SICK to my stomach after reading about the 2 boys in Canada that got probation for what they did to a cat. I guess I should be happy that the other Monster got 2 1/2 years, after reading about the two boys. If these Judges would start handing down the Maximum SENTENCES maybe these ---holes would think twice about hurting a helpless animal. I would love to know what the parents of these two boys in Canada did? Maybe we should start doing an "EYE FOR AN EYE" I think if you are that HEARTLESS to hurt a innocent animal then you should have to endure the same punishment you put the animal through. I would love to put those 2 little B------- in with a couple very HUNGRY BIG CATS. Let them feel the terror and pain that poor cat felt. Their parents should go in right after them. I am so tired of hearing how people/kids are getting a slap on the hands for torturing helpless animals. And then a Judge thinks telling them they can never own or be around animals is going to stop them. HELLO ... Most serial killer started out torturing small animals, that is how Hitler started out. If kids are capable of this at a young age, What are they going to be capable of at an older age? When are people going to wake up to the fact that if you can hurt a helpless animal GOD only knows what you can do to another human. If you can knowingly hurt and torture a helpless animal I feel you know longer should have rights just as if you knowingly hurt and torture another humans, you as a human do not deserve to have ANY RIGHTS. Animals don't even treat each other as we do, they have respect for each other. I hope and I pray that KARMA is real and they get theirs 10 fold. It is pretty sad that we will put a dog down in a minute if it bites a human but put a cat in a microwave and get probation what is wrong with this picture? And I would love to be" ONE OF THE ANIMAL LOVERS" that comes face to face with these little HEARTLESS ---holes. And as for the Attorney who says we care more about animals then people. Your client is not a person he is a heartless coward that should be put in jail and labeled a child molester in general population and let the inmates do what they will to him. Animals love us unconditionally all they want is to love us and this is how these sick heartless ---holes treat them. AN EYE FOR AN EYE !!!!!!!! Lets see how many sickos will hurt an animal if they know they will get what they give ! !

Re: Cat Killer Sentenced

hey no cat lover, were you dropped as a child, or maybe your mama drank too much while pregnant? lol, you just sound soooo ignorant - a crime is a crime, that's why we have laws in this country defining crimes. this guy broke the law, regardless if you see animal life as unimportant, criminals in society need to be punished - get an education regarding people who abuse animals and the increase in their criminal history severity before you make yourself sound so dumb again
