| Sep 5 Written by:aajoanne Friday, September 05, 2008 Snuppy, the first cloned dog, is now a proud papa. And the mom? Well, there are two -- both cloned Afghan Hounds themselves.
"SEOUL (AFP) — Snuppy, the first cloned dog, has become a father after the world's first successful breeding involving only cloned canines, South Korean researchers said Thursday. The Afghan hound impregnated two cloned bitches of the same breed through artificial insemination, a Seoul National University (SNU) research team said in a statement." Everyone loves a cute puppy - but what are your thoughts on this second generation of cloned dogs? Read the Article >> Tags: 14 comments so far...
Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
With the problem of dog over population in the pet world why would anyone want to clone them?

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
I think it's great that we have the know how and technology to do such things, but do we really need to? As 'thecrazycatlady' said, with the world-wide over poplulation of dogs, we don't need any more by cloning. But I understand also that they are breeding them to see how much they have achieved in the field. Even though we CAN clone, why would we ever need to? What purpose would it serve?

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
Of course, they are all cute and wonderful. I have a problem with cloning when there are so many cute and wonderful dogs awaiting a loving home and so many being killed because they don't find one. I might feel different about it if all dogs had a loving home and there was a need for more. That will probably be never.

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
This is a totally ridiculous use of time and money, not to mention what torture it is to the animals. This is the first "successful" cloning. Many many dogs before these have been cloned but with major birth defects, diseases, and other problems that kill the animals. There is no reason to clone animals - or humans - not even for research. Cloning donated cells is fine - but no one should ever mess with the lives of animals or people.

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
I PERSONALLY THINK WE SHOULD LEAVE THE MIRACLE OF BIRTH TO GOD AND THE NATURAL CYCLE OF LIFE . . . STOP CLONING AFTER ALL WHAT EARTHLY PURPOSE DOES IT SERVE? OK SO THEY PROVED CLONING CAN BE DONE - THEY SHOULD BE FOCUSING THEIR RESEARCH FOR THE BETTER ON MAN AND WORK ON HEALTH CURES WE SO DESPERATELY NEED TO SAVE LIVES.
AS FOR ALL THE ANIMALS THAT NEED TO BE RESCUED AND SAVED IS WHAT WE THE PEOPLE SHOULD FOCUS ON. "THE GREATNESS OF A NATION AND IT'S MORAL PROGRESS CAN BE JUDGED BY HOW IT'S ANIMALS ARE TREATED." GAHNDI "SAVING ONE ANIMAL WILL NOT SAVE THE WORLD . . . BUT SURLEY FOR THE ONE ANIMAL THE WORLD WILL CHANGE FOREVER."

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
Maybe for an endangered, threatened species or breed...but with all of the poor puppies, cats, dogs, kittens being euthanized DAILY, YTF would ppl be spending money to CLONE!!?????? That's just stupid and selfish.Great...we have the technology...well whoop-dee-doo.....Start cloning AFTER every animal has a forever home!
If more ppl would STOP giving money to these clinics/scientists (i.e. the birdbrain woman who had her rott cloned), they'd quit spending their time on these cloning projects for media attention and money.

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
Even though the puppies are so cute. HOWEVER, I DO NOT AGREE WITH CLONING AT ALL. THERE ARE SO MANY ANIMALS THAT NEED TO BE RESCUED. STOP WASTING MONEY ON THIS.

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
I am definitely against cloning any animals. There are so many homeless dogs and other animals that the only reason I can think that these dogs were cloned if for the money. Who knows what kind of medical problems they will eventually have. Or how long they will live. Leave recreation to GOD. Please stop this practice. I would never support a cinic that does clooning.Nor would I buy one of these dogs.

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
Wow - does this raise a host of questions! Are these pups considered "experimental", "llab property"; what regulations do these poor pups fall under? Do they serve as further lab material and subject to atrificial environments and testing? Who supervises their treatment and care? This situation is so worrisome and alarming to me and many others! Someone start adopting them please!

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
I imagine these lovely animals will spend most of their lives in a laboratory being prodded, probed and injected on a daily basis. How nice to be a clone. These research studies will only send their findings to greedy groups such as the one who stole the Best Friends name. They will botch many attempts in order to "sell" cloned animals to unsuspecting owners who just want "fluffy" back.

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
I too have to agree that cloning puppies when there are so many dying for want of a good home. They also don't mention hw many defective and deformed dogs came up first that they destroyed. Birth is not for us to duplicate. When they cloned the sheep, Dolly, there were a lot of failures and she didn't live that long. Research on animals is against God's ordination that we are to care for them, not abuse them. These poor animals will not know a real home, because they are lab material.

Re: Snuppy Has Puppies
I agree that cloning of dogs, however cute they may be, is a waste of technology, money and time. Whatever happened to natural born dogs? We have so many to choose from, and what is wrong with the proper breeding of pedigreed dogs to provide a pure breed? We should not meddle with God's creation.
