Pet EvacuationWe're so thankful that Hurricane Gustav weakened and didn't deliver the impact to the Gulf Coast that we had all feared. And in other good news, it seems that this time pets were taken care of as well as their owners when it came time to evacuate.

"Thousands of pets accompanied the estimated two million people who fled inland from the U.S. Gulf Coast this past weekend as Hurricane Gustav hurtled toward the region.

"This is the first time in history that pets have been a priority in an evacuation," said Ana Zorrilla, CEO of the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LA-SPCA), based in New Orleans. "

Great job one and all!

I was glued to my TV durring this storm and was so happy to see how well this time they took care of the animals as well for people i just know I couldn't live a day without my Rylee, she may be my service animal but she is also my best friend and companion as well.

Thank you for sharing this news. It makes my heart feel good! And it makes me think there just might be hope for humans after all! For me, leaving my two little boys behind just would not be an options!

Re: Evacuation Success

I was paying close attention to how Louisiana officials handled emergency preparation, from a pet-owner's perspective. I was delighted to note that animals weren't just left behind to fend for themselves.

We were evacuated here in Gulf Shores, AL. I stayed with friends in Montgomery and just got back to town this morning. The first thing I looked up was how the Gulf Coast Zoo fared (all the animals are fine, and no damage to the zoo) and how the animal evacuation went in (especially) New Orleans.

It looks as though not only are government officials and volunteer efforts doing a better job with hurricane emergency preparedness, but civilians are actually LISTENING and following the advice. Here on the Alabama Gulf Coast, there was great respect for the way local law enforcement worked to help with evacuations, and a clear message from the Governor's office. I am so thankful to live in an area that is prepared for hurricanes and dedicated to saving lives, human and animal!

Kudo's to LA. officials for learning a valuable lesson from Katrina and implementing it this time.....and for the citizens who left town and took their furbabies with them - kudo's to you all!! But I was very touched to see how the officials this time helped the misfortunate to get out on a timely basis and allowed them to bring their furbabies too!!! Mother nature at times isn't very kind - but when people come together and work together its amazing what good can be accomplished!!!
