| Aug 28 Written by:aajoanne Thursday, August 28, 2008 America has voted and it looks like the best pet for the Obamas is a poodle!
"NEW YORK - It was a close race, but in the end the Poodle beat out the Wheaten Terrier in a survey for the most suitable breed for the family of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
The American Kennel Club said Thursday 42,000 people cast their vote during the seven-week survey to choose a family dog for the Obamas."
We're still pushing for the Obamas to adopt a shelter dog! Read More >> Tags: 33 comments so far...
Re: It's a Poodle!
I think that's fine. Poodles are great and the shelters are full of them. All colors, ages, and types. The Obama's should get on a list at each shelter requesting they be notified when a poodle or two are available. Then they can adopt one and give a happy home he or she. I hope even if Obama doesn't win, they get a dog anyway. Kids love pets and can learn a lot of responsibility from them.

Re: It's a Poodle!
I'm with myhoneybell. If they decide on a poodle, they need to go with a rescue. There are rescue groups that specialize in poodles. I'm sure they would find a great little friend.

Re: It's a Poodle!
Why didn't he get a dog earlier in his daughters' lives? Maybe it's just more "presidential" to have a dog ! Sounds like good publicity to me. Just a thought .....

Re: It's a Poodle!
I don't think a poodle would be my choice, but I didn't vote so I can't really complain!! I'd be more inclined to go with a shelter dog - more character. I'm thinking a Benji-type. I would recommend a larger dog, but I don't know how much time they'll have to spend romping on the White House grounds!! A bigger dog might be bored. Of course, any dog might be bored - what with all those Washington-types and cranky-looking Secret Service people around!!

I wouldn't do that to any breed, He would spend most of his time deciding what and when to feed it.....

Re: It's a Poodle!
I have an Idea!! Why don't they adopt a Michael Vick Pit Bull Dog that they siezed and give him a good home. I'm sure Vick and his friends would give him a vote for that.

Re: It's a Poodle!
A really intelligent dog like a poodle, (a standard might be best) would be a fine match for the Obamas, who are both so bright and accomplished as well as dear with their children. A shelter poodle would have a nice symbolic link, as well, since Senator Obama spent so much time after earning his Harvard law degree working to bring a better life to ordinary folk on Chicago's South Side. And for a family that will (if the best man wins) be entertaining all sorts of heads of state in the White House, a dog that does not shed and that is hypoallergenic would be the best bet.

Re: It's a Poodle!
Please, any self respecting animal would know that the last place an intelligent pet would want to be is the White House! They know instinctively that the humans inside are fully fools and idiots. Who would want to be associated with that kind of riff raff. I am going to see who my cat, Ralf is going to vote for before I decide. So far, he has not even registered. What does that tell 'ya?

Re: It's a Poodle!
I think that for them to get ANY animal would be a mistake. its CLEAR that the OBAMAS are NOT the type of people who like animals. If they wanted one they've had a long time to get one. Frankly, if they get an animal of any kind now, I would think it was ONLY to become more "Likeable". I think he is all about himself; he can't share himself with anything that won't further his grandiose amitions.

Re: It's a Poodle!
Are you kidding? The Obama's need a pit bull or American Staffordshire Terrior if you please! Just look at all the pretty babies available just at our local shelter > http://www.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?breed=pit+bull&tmpl=&preview=&animal=Dog&preview=&zip=44870 AND, what better way to show the world what a great breed it really is and help to heal the wounds made by the bad rep they've been given!?!

Re: It's a Poodle!
Why would anyone buy a purebred dog when the shelters are still full? If they've never had a dog before, they should get a rescue and have it trained or get a rescue who has been trained and then turned in. Puppies chew and have to be housebroken and do a whole lot of other things many people don't want to deal with. That's why the pounds are full. They need to be schooled on taking care of a dog and the dog needs to be schooled! There are also specific breed rescues where they can find an excellent dog.
I agree with Su that they aren't the type to even have a dog or they would have. If they do get one, it should be neutered. We don't need a bunch of inbread dogs because they are from a line that he owned. I once owned a Manchester that was of the lineage from a PA governor. That dog was unfit to be a pet. He was high-strung, mean, strong enough to bite and bring blood, which he did. We loved him and kept him, but it was a chore. A large dog with that personality would have had to be put down.

Re: It's a Poodle!
Well, if this poodle type dog is the family's choice, they may not know this right now, but their choice would best be served thru adopting a shelter dog.....many shelters would be so happy to help you and the dog find one another...my choices in adopting always were cats as I had most experience with cats....what I find was that the rescued animals seemed to know they were getting a second change at a forever home and I found the pets to be extra loveable, and even grateful for taking them to a loving home, where the full family allowed me (the full family) lots of patience to feel safe and comfortable.....They seem to know they have been chosen, loved so much they were wanted to join their family. Over the past25 yrs, I have rescued 5 different cats, all ages, all sizes, all types, all females. During the yrs, anywhere from 2 to 3 of them were with me, bvut sickness may take a cat after working with its vet....our 5 were names Sedona, after a visit to Sedona, another one was Chloe, a sweetheart, very shy but in time she came around, then we had Tessis, she only lived 5 yrs,,,abused extremely while a young kitten, some of the abuse caused her a shortened life, there was Lovie and her Mama Kitty, freal to homeless cats living under my porch, I faithfully daily fed them and when they trusted me enough, I took each to the vet for spaying and complete vet exams, got all their shots needed &cleaned up, they are still with me, now after 2 yrs with Mama and 1 yr with Lovey, they now trust me, and live inside, their lives were pitiful before trusting me to help them, an bring them in, up to then, they were completely on their own. They are much enjoyed by me. and now are hoppy to have their forever home. DO GET A DOG THRU A GOOD SHELTER, YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

Re: It's a Poodle!
This wasn't meant to be a political issue. This ia an animal forum and the concern should be for the animal. Having a dog is a serious commitment, not unlike having a child. Adoption would always be my choice but whatever they do, I hope the decision is made with a lot of thought and concern for the dog itself.

I might consider voting for him if he did adopt a shelter dog. Why don't any of these candidates talk about the issues of animals anyway? It's a problem that needs addressing also.

They should adopt a donkey since they're both two of the biggest asses in this country. A dog of any breed would be far too good for them.

Re: It's a Poodle!
Dear Hillary, I think YOU need a donkey!!! Hope they get a shelter dog. Obama promised his girls a dog after the election, win or loose. He was just waiting for them to become old enough to be responsible for the care and feeding. Sounds like a good plan to me.

Re: It's a Poodle!
How about the Obamas rescuing a retired racing greyhound? They are classic, beautiful, loving, and in serious need of rescue. They have a brutal life at the track, and when the racing industry is done with them, those not rescued are sent to labs or killed. Greyhounds are overbred, to produce champions, and despite the increase in rescue groups, there aren't enough homes for those discarded by the racing industry. It is uncertain exactly how many of these wonderful dogs are inhumanely killed when they are injured, or simply not good racers. They are sweet, affectionate, even-tempered, and make excellent companions for families or singles.
