| Aug 21 Written by:aajoanne Thursday, August 21, 2008 Thanks to member Labdp for her contributions to our blog! Over drive, drive time, drive-able, play drive, pray drive, prey drive. Drive you crazy, drive you up the wall, drive - it comes in many shapes and forms.
What drives you? What drives you to distraction? Is it chocolate? Is it work? For the dogs......well, for Mickey, a squirrel in the tree is the ultimate. For Maddie, a ball to chase after is her bliss. For Kobe, well, his nap drive is on over drive. But, as an old dog who's had a rough life I believe he's earned that privilege.
We're still learning what Sidney's drive is all about. I can say his prey drive is every bit as active as his play drive. The bunnies in the garden need to be warned. Sid knows they are there and given the chance fur is going to fly. Naturally it makes me wonder if exposure to hunting was somewhere in his past, or if it's just the bird dog in him. It makes me wonder if when we get to training him on the invisible fence, if his prey drive with make him a slower learner. With a young pointers spaz-like tendencies, he doesn't need any extra challenges.
Funny what a difference two weeks can make. Two weeks ago I was worried if he'd ever walk over the threshold of the door. Now I'm wondering about his prey drive.
All of this, of course, comes in answer to the pray drive that got him out of that nasty shelter and into a safe foster home. If everyone who worked to get him out, helped him in any way, and prayed for help to come could see him now - you would be amazed.
If Sid could speak......he'd be speechless......if he could write....words would elude him.......but he can and is thriving - thanks to all who had the drive to get him here.

Re: Drive
Is that a grey-faced Vizsla I see there? If it is, there is no question about their prey drive! What a gorgeous dog!!!

Re: Drive
Sidney is a lemon and white English Pointer. None of the photo's I've taken of him do him justice.

Re: Drive
Sidney is a definitely a good looking dog. Have been so thrilled to read of his progress. What a big heart you have! Wish there were more like you out there! Good luck w/the whole prey drive thing! My 11 y/o German Shorthair is only just now starting to slow down! She's never been hunted but she didn't need any kind of training when it came to prey! A few bunnies in the yard haven't been quick enough & that was all she wrote! She will also stand under a tree baying/barking for ever when a squirrel dares to enter the yard, keep telling her they won't come down when you yell at them, but...... Anyway, I'm so thrilled that Sidney is doing so well!

Re: Drive
What a great story and what a beautiful dog!! I love these "happy endings"!!! No matter how down I get, I can log on here and there is always a story (or several) that bring a smile to my face and reminds me that not all people abuse our special friends!!!!! Thanks for always being able to restore my faith!!!

Re: Drive
Sidney is precious and reminds me of my lab named Plato (we called him Playdo) he was so playful. He did meditate though when it came to watching birds, etc.
It is the best feeling knowing you have given a new chance for happiness to a pet that was confined to a kennel. (Not to knock the kennels that do take these animals first and find the home.s)
Have you seen if Sidney likes water? A small play pool is a favorite of many water dogs for play and comfort in the warm weather. I am speaking from a Texas point of view. Of my two pups a "Rooster" Schnauzer and "Daisy" American Brittany the Brittany is all bird dog and Rooster will sit and watch the squirrel for hours.
Good job on offering Sidney the choice to follow any of his drives.

Re: Drive
PS Meant to add the day I brought Daisy home from the animal shelter she spent a good five minutes just running fast laps around and around my big backyard. I set in a lawn chair in the center of my yard under my big tree and just watched her doing circles around me. It was great!

Re: Drive
Oh, I know the feeling. My shepherd drives me Crazy at the pool. Non- stop jumping in for what ever toy. And when the prey drive comes into the scene, just as horrible. But, she can be lots of fun. So, I stay away from the pool when I don't have the energy to blow her steam off. lol. Dogs are so cool. They are all different just like us. By the way nice dog!
