Thanks to member Labdp for her contributions to our blog!

I absolutely believe you can depend on the kindness of strangers. They will do anything for you. These same strangers are probably angels in human clothing. When these same angel/strangers are dog lovers awesome things happen.

Our new foster dog, who is pending a name change, flew in by plane today. A good hearted man, with 6 dogs of his own, shared his time and talent to bring this young pointer to Omaha.

I have never handled a dog to scared to move. They lifted him out on to the wing of the plane and he literally clung to it. No amount of coaxing would induce him to move. Imagine a dog velcro'd to a tiny plane. That was our boy. I had to almost peel him from it by lifting him. Now that's scared. Tail tucked clear to his nose. Bless his lucky paws.

He walked (loosely used phrase) off the runway, posed unwillingly for photo's and then we made way to our vehicle. I lifted him in and he hunkered in a crouched position for the ride home. At home I lifted him out and we let him sniff around the yard. We tried to entice him into the house with liver treats - but he was not falling for that. In the end, he was carried over the threshold like a reluctant bride.

He did wag his tail when he met some of the resident dogs - that was a good sign. As I write he is napping in his new crate. Even that took time. It was a good 30 minutes before he would lay down. He was nodding off and fighting sleep the whole way.

For now he's resting. His journey here covers more than the miles between Erick, OK and Omaha, NE. It covers many frigid nights, countless hot hopeless days. It covers the mystery of why he was a stray and it will cover the road to a forever home.

He's safe, he's resting, and he has a second chance. This is what rescue is all about. And we all give thanks for that.

Re: The Journey Begins

WHAT A WONDERFUL STORY. IF I WERE CLOSE ENOUGH I WOULD FOR SURE BUY YOU A CUP OF COFFEE.I LIVE VERY FAR BACK IN THE WOODS, AND PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS DUMPING THEIR UNWANTED DOGS OUT HERE. IT SEEMS LIKE I HAVE A RUNNING TAB WITH MY VET, [ SPAYING, NUETERING. ] SOME OF THESE DOGS WERE AT ONE TIME VERY EXPENSIVE BABIES. I HAVE ONE [ CATAULA CUR ] THAT HAS MENTAL PROBLEMS. I AM THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN TOUCH HER. WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PLACE SOME OF THESE DOGS, SOME WE HAVE NOT. WE ALWAYS HAVE A PACK OF DOGS, I CAN NOT SEE A HUNGRY ANIMAL AND NOT FEED IT. I DO BELIEVE THAT DOGS ARE ANGELS IN DIGUISE, SENT HERE TO BE OUR BEST FRIENDS. MY HOPE IS THAT WHEN WE MAKE THAT FINAL TRIP TO MEET OUR MAKER THAT IT IS ONE BIG DOG, AND PEOPLE WILL HAVE TO ANSWER FOR THEIR ACTIONS CONCERNING THESE MOST NOBLE CREATURES, BONNIE

Thank you for the update!!!
Brought tears to my eyes.
We'll be keeping him in our hearts and prayers that he relaxes soon, and can "feel the love".
What a lucky baby.

What wonderful people, you, the pilot who gave so freely from his heart.
Looking forward to pics!
Good Luck to all!

Re: The Journey Begins

I've been thinking about him and wondering if he got to you finally. So glad to see that he did. We can only imagine what is going on in that little mind and what he has been through. Such a heartwarming story. Please keep us posted on his progress and his new name.
You are a special person They are special creatures.
I am right on board with Bonnie's hope, "MY HOPE IS THAT WHEN WE MAKE THAT FINAL TRIP TO MEET OUR MAKER THAT IT IS ONE BIG DOG, AND PEOPLE WILL HAVE TO ANSWER FOR THEIR ACTIONS CONCERNING THESE MOST NOBLE CREATURES, "

That is a visual that I will hang onto!
Hugs to that special boy that you are giving a chance for a happy life.

Re: The Journey Begins

God bless you and all of the members here who are involved in animal rescue, you are an unbelievably selfless group of people who deserve such admiration for the work that you do. I'm sure this pup is in the best of hands now and will have a bright future.
I just adopted my third rescued cat and he is a wonderful loving baby who was removed from an unfortunate situation, luckily he was given special attention and socialization by a wonderful woman involved in his rescue. I can't imagine what would happen to all of these beautiful animals without the extraordinary work done by rescue groups.
Best wishes and luck with this pup's rehabilitation.

Re: The Journey Begins

Awww. I have boughten dogs like that.
My boston was in a cold barn in November. I brought him home and put him in a little bed. I put a bowl of food by it. And every day I would move the bowl farther away. In two days or so he came out and started to act normal.
He is 8 years old this month. And when it is too cold or too rainy out he stays in his bed. I waited to him to go to the door. I figure he remembers those cold nights back then. I just think how lucky I was to get him that day. I don't know why those amish people would keep his mother and babies out in the cold like that. But, I am the lucky one he has been the best

Re: The Journey Begins

I am glad that your new dog has a new home and yes, it is an adjustment for him as well as you. You have to remember that Love never fails. He will open up when he feels loved and trust. Just begin a routine and try to keep close to it. Then he will warm up to you and his surroundings. The kennel should be his haven to go back to when he feels scared or just wants to lie down, so make sure that you train him to go into the kennel and reward him. My dogs were potty trained with smarties and do not have accidents in the house. So encourage everyone to be patient and use positive training.

Re: The Journey Begins

I adopted my dog Bella when she was about 5 months old. She was terrified of everything, being outside, grass, doorways, windows, blinds, stairs...you name it...she was scared of it. The organization that rescued her from a Kansas shelter arrived a day before she was scheduled to be euthanized because of severe shyness. When I met her for the first time, she turned her back to me and stood there shaking and drooling. She was completely 'shut down' emotionally. Ideally I should have introduced myself to her slowly, but since I was only given 10-15 minutes with her, I did my best to show her I meant her no harm. From the moment I saw her, I knew she was going home with me. She spent her entire short life in a small cage without human contact before being seized by the authorities. I had my work cut out, but also knew I could do it. I wanted her to discover the world and feel confidence, love and security instead of fear and anxiety. She drooled and threw up several times on the drive home and once inside the house, tried in vain to find someplace to hide. She was even afraid of our cat. I was told to expect months before she trusted me and connected with me, but am happy to say within days she was on her way of healing. With a consistent routine, unconditional love and acceptance, she is a joyful, happy and balanced dog. I have since adopted a companion for her, Champ, who ‘special needs’ since he had his leg amputated a month before I adopted him. They are wonderful dogs! These special dogs, who have suffered emotionally and physically, deserve love, patience and time to heal and the security of knowing they are home forever. Thank you for rescuing him and helping him rehabilitate. It won't be long before others see what a fabulous dog he is and offer him a forever home!

Re: The Journey Begins

God bless you and your new pup. You have brought tears to my eyes that are rolling down my cheeks at this very moment. I too believe in angels on earth and am so very thankful for them. I think you may count yourself as one along with all the others who care so deeply and compassionately for our furry friends. They were created for a reason by the powers that be and deserve every bit of love they can possibly ever imagine. The people here on animal attraction are my kind of people. You and your new pup are in my thoughts and prayers. Enjoy that baby as I know he will(already does I bet even though he's too nervous to show it or even know it). Furry hugs and kisses.
