| Aug 1 Written by:aajoanne Friday, August 01, 2008 Wow, the seemingly bizarre pet laws in other countries are coming out of the woodwork! Take this one from Saudi Arabia - no walking your pets in the capital of Riyadh.
When you read the article, you'll understand why this ban is being enforced, but it just really highlights the differences between cultures - even though we all love our pets! "The Saudi religious police have reportedly vowed to strictly enforce a ban on the sale of pet cats and dogs in Riyadh and walking animals in public. The claim is that men were using their pets as an excuse to meet women, which is banned in places like restaurants and cafes between non-married people." Re: No Dog Walking Allowed
Talk about BACKWARD THINKING!!!! This country should really think about stepping out of the DARK AGES!!! This goes to show you how a society refuses to remove the blinders of ignorance and close-mindedness. And to think about how much a society is missing out on some of the most precious things in life...

Re: No Dog Walking Allowed
Wow! If they can't walk them, why should they even have them? How do they get exercise? Wonder if they are allowed to play with them in their own yards???? Amen to God & our troops for making me American! As a single mother of 2 with 3 dogs - needless to say - I'D NEVER MAKE IT OVER THERE!!!!!! I'd be stoned to death the 1st week I'm sure!

Re: No Dog Walking Allowed
I dont believe its necessarily fair to not be able to walk your dog, but that is their culture, and that is what they know, muslim women are not all desperate to 'date' or meet men, this is a sensitive issue requiring compassion and slow cultural shift, women need more rights to vote, drive and run and own their own businesses or work this is where it should start, with support of womens rights to these basic freedoms, read 'kabul beauty school' and other books to learn about how we can help women in this culture without sending in the troops. Support their right to remain muslim and go about life differently than we do while asking what freedoms do they want?

Re: No Dog Walking Allowed
I TRULY BELIEVE THAT THE WHOLE COUNTRY AND ALL OF IT'S SO-CALLED LEADERS AND THE STUPID, MORONIC POLICE WHO ENFORCE THE STUPID IDIOTIC LAWS ON IT'S OWN PEOPLE ARE GOING TO GO TO HELL IN A WASTE BASKET, WHERE SUCH TRASH SHOULD BE PUT...I BET THAT THE SO-CALLED LEADERS DO THE VERY THINGS THAT THEY FORBID THEIR OWN PEOPLE TO DO...I THINK THAT THE REAL DOGS IN THIS STORY ARE ON 2 LEGS, NOT 4...I HAVE NO LOVE WHATSOEVER FOR THE SAUDIS AND THEIR RELIGION, IF YOU CAN CALL IT THAT...IT IS AMAZING TO ME THAT THE WOMEN ARE SUBJECT TO SUCH HARSH TREATMENT SINCE THEY ARE THE MOTHERS WHO HAVE HAD THESE SO-CALLED MEN WHO HAVE TURNED ON THE WOMEN AND FORGOT ALL OF THE UPBRINGING INVOLVED IN RAISING KIDS IN SUCH A HARSH AND BACKWARD COUNTRY...SAUDI ARABIA WILL SURELY BE THE FIRST COUNTRY TO BE DESTROYED BY GOD AT THE SECOND COMING...

Re: No Dog Walking Allowed
I can't believe that. It would be understandable if people refuse toclean up after their dogs, but not allowed to walk dogs iin the city capital, well I won't be part of that I belong to a wlaking club and we walk with out four legged friends all over the place cpital cities towns woods everywhere. We do clean up after out four legged friends. I am proud to be an American Our troops are doing a supper job I wish they could come home let Suadi fight for their own freedom. If they don't want freedom they get what they deserve. Bring our Soldiers HOME...

Re: No Dog Walking Allowed
There's something else behind this. Muslims of all stripes consider Dogs filthy creatures and most are terrified of them. Remember the pictures out of Abu Ghraib prison and how the prisoners were threatened and teased with dogs? What I find strange in this story is that there are any Dogs kept as pets in Saudi Arabia at all.

Re: No Dog Walking Allowed
It is horrifying to think that many people across the world live in such repressive societies. Believe me, I am very grateful to live in a country where people, and women in particular, can make choices for themselves. What you see in Saudi Arabia is a continuation of thousands of years of repression. But before we swell up too much with pride, consider that women in the U.S. have only been able to vote for a bit over 100 years. And it took us over 70 years from the first suffrage demonstrations to get that. Many of our current freedoms were fought for in the 1970's - only 30 years ago. While the push for humane treatment of animals has been around for a long time, our level of active involvement in animal issues, and pets' importance as part of our families is fairly recent.
Awareness of other cultures and systems of belief has only been "web-easy" for 20 years, at most. I think we need to give them a chance, and the support, to find their way in their own time. They just better not come after me or my pets!
