Dog KarmaI never really took time to ponder karma. I was aware there was good karma, and bad karma. I've seen someone with a really bad case of karma. It was not a pretty sight. I've wished it on people before - haven't we all?

I heard someone at the dog park today mention poop karma. That's when you know your dog left a pile, you thought you knew exactly where it was deposited, but you can't find it for love nor money. So you do the next best thing, you clean up some other dogs pile. Any pile cleaned up is one less to step in.

What would the world be like if we all went that extra step and not only took care of our 'chit' and helped someone else with theirs? Reminds me of an approach to relationships I heard years ago at an engagement encounter. The suggestion was made to attempt to give 100% to your relationships. Granted, it is not always possible to succeed at that. But if you attempt to go 50-50 and fall short, you may be giving say 30% on a bad karma day. If you strive for 100% and step in some do-do along the way, you may only be able to give say 80%. I'd much rather give my best 80% than my best 30%. Why all this comes to mind at this particular time is of course a mystery. All I know for sure is that good karma begets good karma, bad karma will find you if you walk away from your messes, and yes, poop happens. So I'll try for 100%, clean up the messes I can, carry an extra (empty) poop bag, and offer a helping hand along the way.

Re: All Kinds of Karma

Best comments on karma I've ever read, and yes, wouldn't it be a much better world if more people believed.

Re: All Kinds of Karma

My old Irish Grandma used to wisely say; "If everyone swept the sidewalk in front of their own house, then the whole world would be clean"! If you take that a step further & try to help out our fellow man/dog, then not only would the world be clean but alot happier as well. Kudos to you & good Karma too.

Re: All Kinds of Karma

I loved the thought of helping others ... I truly believe in Karma or maybe something spiritual ... then I looked at my cat and thought litter box ... :0)

Re: All Kinds of Karma

I whole heartedly believe in karma. Sometimes it seems to take longer to occur then we think it should...but in the end, if we wait long enough, it usually does, good or bad.
I love the idea of thinking of it as piles of poop! LOL! There is so much in life that we can compare that too! I'm going to tuck that picture away in my mind for future reference!I have a couple of "piles" going on in my life right now that I need to scoop up! ;)

Re: All Kinds of Karma

Best I've ever read on Karma. Wish that there were more people like that around me, it would boost my Karma up moore and make me try harder for a helping hand for those who needs it.
Have a good one! :-)

Re: All Kinds of Karma

I always carry plenty of extra bags when we go to the dog park; what's more, I do "go the extra mile," by buying these wonderful vanilla-scented "poop'n'scoop" bags, and sharing them with my fellow dog owners. As I always tell them, "it helps to make an unpleasant task just that little bit less unpleasant!" They certainly don't cost any extra...a box of 60 of these vanilla-scented "poop'n'scoop" bags only costs $1 at a nearby dollar store, considerably less than those "bags on board" brand bags...you know, the ones in the cute little "garbage bin" shaped dispenser? I always buy a few dollars' worth whenever I get to that end of the neighbourhood, so that I always have plenty to share.

Although Tas will usually only "go" once or twice per trip, I always carry 10 bags just in case our friends need any; after all, it never hurts to carry spares. As an old friend who served in Vietnam always used to say, "It's better to HAVE and not NEED, than to NEED and not HAVE!"

I pick up after my dog religiously! What's more, ever since he was little I trained him to "sit and stay" beside his "product" until I can retrieve it, which generally makes for a lot less trouble finding them, especially anytime he "goes" in deep grass or bush! Although I can usually just "follow my nose," it's good to know that it's always within three feet of where he's sitting (usually on the downwind side, of course!) since that spares me having to hunker down and search through waist-high grass and weeds!

I also pick up after quite a few other dogs, whose owners obviously don't appreciate the absolute GEM of a dog park we have! Usually, I only pick up after them if they've left the pile where people are likely to step in it, on the trails or out in the wide-open field...I will NOT go searching through the waist-high grass and weeds in the NCC's big vacant lot adjoining the dog park looking for unclaimed piles, LOL! Instead of scolding owners who don't "scoop," I try to make sure they see me picking up after their dog, and just hope it gives them the right idea.

Other than that, there's really not much else I can do to convince them of the need to keep our wonderful dog park clean, although there are times when I'm VERY sorely tempted to dump their dogs "stuff" on their own front lawns! Strangely, it's almost always those people who live really close to the dog park who don't really seem to appreciate it; I guess they just take it for granted since it's practically right outside their doors. We, on the other hand, have to walk nearly a mile just to get there!

I guess all I can do is hope that they learn to appreciate our wonderful dog park, because it really is a gem among its kind; it's a huge, wide-open field right by the banks of the Rideau River in the heart of central Ottawa, with TONS of space to play and romp and run, as well as loads of places to "take the plunge" and cool off in the river! All in all, I think it's by far the best off-leash dog park in town, and like most other owners I want to make sure that it stays that way, so it's well worth picking up after a few negligent owners' dogs. I just hope they DO get some "dog poop Karma" in return for every time they fail to pick up after their dogs!

Re: All Kinds of Karma

It makes for good karma, true. It also makes us good neighbors, and that's something that's sadly lacking in the world today.
