| Jul 23 Written by:aajoanne Wednesday, July 23, 2008 This is another head-shaker.... K9 police in the U.K. have new guidelines to follow when it comes to using their dogs to catch criminals.
Among the new rules are to be thoughtful before releasing the hounds in case the criminals are frightened by dogs or if they could be allergic. What??? I might be a bit old-fashioned, but I thought criminals kind of lost their rights when they broke the law??? "The whole point of police dogs is to frighten people rigid, at least those who have just committed a crime and would otherwise make a clean getaway,’ a sergeant told the magazine Police Review." Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
Are you kidding me?!
THEY'RE the ones who obviously stirred up enough trouble to constitute the use of the dogs...why should we care if they're scared or allergic? They're just going to jail afterward.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
Well, this "politically correct" way of thinking regarding the police dogs just follows, given the fact that a criminal can actually SUE a person if he should get hurt during the commission of a crime on that person's private property!!!! H-E-L-L-O-----I DON'T GET IT!! What ever happened to JUSTICE? Let the dogs do what they want to these jerks.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
Wow, there sure is a lot of hostility towards perceived "criminals," here, isn't there? Someone even suggested that criminals "loose" their rights when they commit a crime, but that's just wrong; "loose" is the opposite of "tight."
Human rights must apply to ALL people, regardless of whether they're engaged in criminal activity or not; this is so that your rights can't be taken away from you just because someone accuses you of doing something wrong...especially if you didn't do it!
I can understand having reasonable guidelines as to when an officer can release their K9 partner to pursue a suspect; that said, I really don't think that things like potential "fear" and/or "allergies" should EVER enter into the equation. If there's a legitimate reason for turning a K9 loose on a suspect, the officer shouldn't have to worry about the suspect being "afraid of dogs," or "allergic to dog hair"; that's just silly!
Unfortunately, I have seen the drastic consequences of mis-use of police dogs; during a G8 summit several years ago in Ottawa, certain Ottawa Police officers deliberately set their dogs on unarmed protesters (none of whom were breaking ANY laws!) one protester was severely mauled by a K9, and required hospitalisation and over 100 stitches! That was CLEARLY wrong, and was a major violation of the protesters rights!
Or should a protester also "loose" his rights for exercising their constitutionally-protected right to make their opinion known?
Where we draw the line determines our fairness as a society; when we sanction the use of powerful, dangerous dogs to bring down criminals, we should make sure those dogs are only ever used in a (righteous) lawful manner, just like when a police officer uses ANY OTHER WEAPON, because that's exactly what a K9 is...a very powerful WEAPON! If an officer sets his dog on an innocent person, it's exactly the same as if he shot an unarmed, innocent man, only maybe even worse, since the amount of damage an enraged K9 can do has to be seen to be believed!
Was that Ottawa police officer right to set his dog on an unarmed protester? No, he was not, and he was later severely disciplined...not that that made any difference to the protester who had his leg torn wide open, and suffered severe damage to his face, neck and chest!
Police K9's can be extremely dangerous weapons; it's only right that there should be very strict guidelines over when an officer can set his K9 partner on someone, because those dogs could easily kill someone, especially if the officer loses control of the dog, which is exactly what happened to that poor protester...the officer in question lost control of his dog, and it took four big officers to pull the dog off the protester!
Should fear and/or allergies play ANY part in determining when an officer can unleash his K9 partner to take down a suspect? Heck no! Should an officer to allowed to unleash his K9 partner on unarmed or innocent people? ALSO "heck no!"
That's why there have to be rules, and why EVERYONE has to have their rights protected and guaranteed...within reason!

Oh! What could we be thinking!!! To do something that might frighten the criminals...Poor babies... Perhaps I'm a tough old broad and need to dig deeper to find the sympathy I seem to be expected to have...I can't seem to come up with it... Nah! I dug deep and I'm still saying, let the dogs scare the crap out of them! Maybe if they don't like the consequences they won't do the crime.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
I agree with MahonMacRi. We all share the same rights and they should be followed but to be concerned over whether or not the alleged criminal has allergies or a fear of dogs...no. I feel that is over the top and unnecessary. Besides, whether the alleged criminal is afraid of dogs or not is beside the point. K-9's are terrifying when let lose and you are the target.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
I say let the dogs go on them! They need to be taught a lesson here. DO THE CRIME, DO THE TIME! It's called JUSTICE!!! And unfortunately, we're seeing less and less everyday. What is going on these days? Why is everyone so soft? A criminal is a criminal regardless what they did and need to take responsibility for their own actions. What's next? Ask if they're allergic or affraid first? Or better yet, look for a medical bracelet on their arm?. People need to stop thinking too much with their hearts and more with their heads.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE MARICOPA COUNTY SHERIFF ( ARIZONA ) AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN. WHY? BECAUSE HE'S TOUGH ON CRIME.
This is an excerpt of an article: Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. 'Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.'
The same day he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: 'It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!'
SO, FOR THOSE OF YOU CRYING ABOUT HUMAN RIGHTS, DON'T forget that this "so-called humans" forgot about human rights when they murdered, raped and robbed innocent civilians.
Don't forget that these criminals are the ones that kidnap, rape, sadomize and kill children, murder women and the elderly, without thinking ONCE ABOUT THE VICTIMS' HUMAN RIGHTS. JUST THINK THAT IT COULD BE ONE OF YOUR KIDS OR FAMILY MEMBER WHO IS THE VICTIM OF A CRIME.
Let's not forget that it is us taxpayers that feed criminals in jail. So, remind again, why do we have to be nice to these maggots of society?
I HOPE THE UK GET STRICTER LAWS AND I HOPE THE U.S. NEVER FALLS FOR THIS "HUMAN RIGHTS CHEAP STORY"

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
I agree with you alphadog 150%, we all need to speak for the victims of their crimes. Criminals LOST their rights the minute the broke the law. They are the roaches, the garbage of society and police officers DO NOT have to be considerate towards criminals. What about the safety of officers protecting all of us. It's an outrage that the UK is doing this crap.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
Great feedback everyone. In this day and age with the disrespect of the law and the disregard for police officers lives as well as civilian lives there has to be a way of stopping criminals in their tracks. This may mean a dog that is trained to defend and apprehend. Officers are safer with the help of their K-9 partners and have proven to be more successfull in the apprehension of criminals.
As far as a suspect being afraid, Good, as far as allergic, bullcrap, give him a alllergy shot. What a bunch of bull. Let's get reak UK and let your law enforcement do their job with your support. Turning dogs loose on a crowd is unfortunate and I don't hear of that very often. So weigh the pros and cons in this issue and realize that you really can benefit from our faithful K-9 partners.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
According to Muslim's, dogs are unclean and should not be touched. Should the polilce inquire as to the suspect's religious persuation before setting the dogs on him or her? We are definitely getting too politically correct in this world.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
As we said before, criminals lose their rights the moment they break the law. If they are so religious, why are they committing crimes in the first place? Who gives a damn what religion they practice. Think about it, if they are good people (NO MATTER THEIR RELIGIOUS BELIEF) they would not commit heinous crimes.
Shibaqueen, you may have a valid question, but think about it, apprehending criminals is not a walk in the park, a lot of action and emotion happen in the split of a second, so, do you think a police officer is going to ask him first whether he's allergic, religious or afraid? And as for dogs being dirty, I think criminals are dirty rats for all the despicable things they do. Just think of the victims!
Therefore, there should be NO consideration for these people at all!!!! Why are people still defending these criminals? How come nobody says anything about the punishments criminals endure in certain parts of the world, (i.e., cutting their hands for stealing). I know this is extreme but nobody complains, and guess what? muggings and burglaries are non-existant in these places. Do criminals ask their victims if they are allergic to bullets or knives? Come on!!! Good people need to be protected by our police officers and that includes dogs, who are officers too.

Um...shouldn't we look at the fact that if the person is "innocent" he/she wouldn't be running from the police in the first place?? Jesus mary N Joseph!!! If someone broke into my house....I'd sit back with a nice cold glass of Sweet Tea and watch my dog rip the !@#! outta the SOB! Sorry just how we do it here in the South. Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
If they hadn't committed a crime then they wouldn't have a K-9 dog after them. What about their victims who may need medical help & mental help after after their ordeal with these criminals, many will need mental help after being traumatized by these lowlifes. The next thing they will be saying is that they are allergic to jail.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
It's nice to see that the people posting have not gotten sucked into the "criminal rights movement." They are criminals, they have broken the law. If they haven't, they are running from the police for some reason or the dogs wouldn't be sent after them. Let's face it, in most cases, the dogs probably have more sense then the criminals. I'm so tired of their rights being talked about. Talk to me about the victims. It's a sad thing when the criminals are given more rights then victims. If they stop and drop the dogs will not hurt them, how smart do you have to be to figure that out....Most of the time people that break the law do what they do because they think they CAN. When they are caught they want a reason to whine. I'm leaning more towards thinking like Texas...if you kill me I'm going to kill you back... And don't mess with the dogs, they are doing their job. Good dogs!

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
No, criminals don't lose their rights when they commit a crime, at least in the US. There is a thing called the Constitution - with Amendments, no less! It applies to all of us, criminals or not! Luckily, the former criminals I have met (both robbery, seperate and unrelated incidents) were scared straight by prison, and are hearty victim's advocates. They admit that what they did was wrong, and both are now devoted family men - although maybe a little nuts about home security! This is ridiculous, though - who gives a crap if they have allergies - if they are that severe, then an epi shot can cure that - and if they are minor, they pay prison doctors to take care of that. And "frightened of dogs"?! This has to be a joke. Sir? I know you just raped that woman over there, but before you run away - are you frightened of dogs? I've got two words for this: Bull Crap !

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
That was a great comment darlasdogs, I'm still laughing. I feel sorry for the K9's that have to live in such stupidity. Maybe they should use hampsters or turtles, an animal that most are not afraid of or allergic to. It will be a win win situation, the criminal won't pee their pants or puff up, and the police won't be sued for "the victim" being hospitalized. And if the police get hurt, well at least they protected the criminal - that's what is important right....

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
Criminals are criminals when they break the law, the K9 Police Officers have the right to release their dogs on the criminals. Allergic I am allergic to dogs and cats fur but I dont get a sudden attack(well I never) But I still love dogs & cats( I own them). The only way they would break out if the fur is all over their face and that barely ever happens when a dog is doing his/her job. So screw that Release the dogs on them. For the scared part they are the ones who did wrong and they probably scared the crap out of the people(depending on what crimes they did) so let it be done to them. If you commit the crime Face the Consequences. For the dog & the Police Officers or Department shouldn't be sued(the criminal would never be in that situation if he/she would obey the law). That is the most stupidest law I ever heard "new rules are to be thoughtful before releasing the hounds in case the criminals are frightened by dogs or if they could be allergic."

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
This is just another reason why so many criminals move to the U.S. They get more than the law abiding citizens. They break the law, they suddenly have "rights" they get a roof over their heads, free food, television, a gym, games makes me want to go rob a bank so I can "retire" to jail. They even get health care. That's more than I get now working three jobs.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
Unclean? Unclean? The only unclean beings in these K-9 criminal control & apprehension cases is the human criminal, no matter what his or her hypocritically professed religious leanings. To any & all who erroneously believe that only human beings have souls, & all other beings have not, should try laying some logical reason to their thinking, & strip away any blinding ego. When someone can start to do this; then the real light of truth starts to shine forth...That the One & Supreme Creator of all that exists, loves all in that creation "EQUALLY". To those who, somehow, buy the thought that dogs are unclean; then you would also have to buy that all of the great services & unconditional friendships that they have rendered to the human race, are unclean acts...the invaluable assistance that they gave in the search &/or rescue of countless many human souls after the murderous act of war committed against this Nation on 9/11 is just one of countless others that comes to mind. Anyway, just some thoughts on this issue.

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
Yeh, well sometimes they try to get the dog to bite them. I knew a police officer who said one guy actually pulled on the dog's tongue. He said why did you do that. He said he thought it would be fun and if the dog bit him he would sue the police department. The only thing I have to say to the criminals out there: "YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN'T HIDE"

Re: Be Nice to the Criminals?
I wouldn't want to be accidentally bitten. Have seen some nasty bites. I think letting the dog bite would have to amount to having to use brute force. A man actually taking aim at innocent people or getting ready to throw a bomb of some kind. If you stop and get down to the ground there is no reason to turn a dog loose. But, like I said people do stupid things to dogs to see if they will bite. The dog who got his tongue yanked on let out a whine, didn't bite. The guy probally would of got what he deserved but the dog must of had a great temperment to him. So, to those officers who use common sense and stay within the law. Good. I think it was cool when I seen some officers down south decide to adopt and train the pit bulls instead of them being shelter kills. I wish I could find that photo and post it. Now, that made me feel good to know someone cares about the pit bull rap sheet they have and do something good out of it. You guys rock wherever you are.
