Obama Family DogWhen Barack Obama announced that they would get a dog after the presidential election was over, the AKC started lobbying for five breeds that best matched the family’s lifestyle. Best Friends has a better idea – adopt!
Now you can show your support homeless pets and help one lucky dog find a forever home in the best house in the country. Take a minute to sign the Best Friends' petition to urge the Obama family to adopt the next first dog!

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

I am an advocate for shelter rescue....but there is nothing wrong in "buying" a dog! Just because it is not something you want to do does not make it wrong! There are respoinsible breeders...not all breeeders abuse. I am an extremely responsible pet owner...my puppies(children!!) live better than many human children....yet I have been treated so poorly by rescue groups in the way some scrutinize prospective owners! I have tried to adopt a particular breed...but chose to buy a puppy after being subjected to a ridiculous screening process. If the rescue volunteer would have come to my home, I GUARANTEE they would have found conditions better than in their own homes.
So....do not judge!

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Yes, I think the Obama family should rescue and adopt a dog from a shelter - I just learned at a lecture last night that the AKC gets money from puppy mills! Shelter animals need more homes than anything - give them a chance to live a happy life and to find a wonderful home, PLEASE!!!

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Either way you still have to pay for a for the dog. Plus buying it your still adopting. I do think It's great when someone adopts from rescues or shelters. But I don't see anything wrong with buying a puppy.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Please, please just go to a shelter and your heart will do the rest. If your family would adopt a shelter dog, you would be helping many dogs with the PR and the example you would be setting. Remember, there are many full-bred dogs there, too, but some of the most lovable and adorable are the mixed breeds. I have three and they are all beautiful and wonderful, loyal companions. Please do this really cool thing.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

I hope that they will at least look at some shelters or rescue groups since many of these dogs need loving families so badly, but if they cannot find a dog that suits their needs, hopefully they will contribute of one of these groups to help them carry on their wonderful work. Remember that their pet will not have a quiet lifestyle and many of these dogs have been thru so much that it could be hard for them to adapt. But wouldn't it be wonderful to show that they care enough to at least check out some of those wonderful dogs and the people that have worked so hard to save them.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

I am all for adopting dogs from a shelter. However, Barack probably won't want to adopt a mutt since all former US presidents have had pure breds like JFK's Welsh Terrier, Eisenhower's Jack Russell, Nixon's Yorkshire Terrier, FDR's Scottie, LBJ's Beagles and the list goes on. I bet he'll let his daughters choose, therefore they will go to a pet shop. He does not seem the dog type, he's just doing it for his daughters and because this was a televised promise. I hope I am wrong and I hope he adopts from a shelter.

By Robcat on  Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

You can get a purebred at a shelter or rescue group Robcat!

And for those that say buying a puppy is ok....what is a responsible breeder? Who decides who is responsible? The AKC certainly doesn't police breeders.

Personally I believe, with so many dogs and cats dying in shelters, anyone would choose to buy from a breeder period is doing a major disservice to those trapped in the system.

I hope Obama does choose the right dog for their family, but that they wait until their right adoptable dog is found.

P.S. To crzyfurluvinu.....the cost difference between a shelter re-homing fee, and what you would pay for a "purebred" dog is incredibly different. If a breeder is selling you puppies for similar prices, he/she is not a reputable breeder.

By Dog Daddo on  Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Dog Daddo ...I beg to differ!
" P.S. To crzyfurluvinu.....the cost difference between a shelter re-homing fee, and what you would pay for a "purebred" dog is incredibly different. If a breeder is selling you puppies for similar prices, he/she is not a reputable breeder."

I used to raise and show Lhasa Apsos and was known to sell pet puppies at greatly reduced prices if the prospective parents passed my strict screening process but didn't have the money and I made it very clear I would be following up on all puppies I sold. I was even known to refuse to sell to people then give the puppy to another individual I felt was a responsible parent to be. And, my prices were CONSIDERABLY LESS (even for show puppies) than the re-homing fees I have seen. Wasn't I a reputable breeder? It would seem you have decided what a responsible/reputable breeder is.

Don't make such statements/generalizations as facts, you are definitely entitled to your opinion but perhaps you should preface your remarks as such.

By PitterPatt on  Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Do you really think that your story is the norm Patt?

Or do you think there are thousands of backyard breeders across the country just trying to get paid back for what they paid for their pup, and then think there is some cash to be made on the deal by having the dog breed more and more?

Any time a discussion comes up about breeding, responsible breeders come out to defend themselves, but rarely chastise the scores and scores of completely irresponsible breeders.

I would never argue that their aren't some people out there very concerned about the animals they breed, and the numbers as such. But I can promise that the millions of dogs dying in shelters every year show that there are far more unscrupulous breeders.

The one thing that always confuses me, is the lack of AKC intervention on this issue? Why wouldn't they want to clean up the puppy mills and backyard breeders to protect people like you Patt?

And of course, this is all completely my opinion :)

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

I really do hope that Obama and family choose from a shelter or rescue, fabulous for those of us working tirelessly to save just one more dog. Why breeding can go on unchecked with animals being euthanized by the thousands every day, I will never understand. If you are going to breed, there needs to be a set limit. Some type of check and balance needs to be done so we can get the dog population under control. Spay and neuter needs to be law, not an option. You need to have a license to breed, with fees and taxes etc............ You need to pay for the privilage to do that. No one should ever be allowed to have 700 dogs on their property(what kind of insanity is that), like the recent puppy mill bust here in TN. Don't tell me that there was not one person who knew what was going on and they just turned their heads and walked on.....pathetic. Ok that's my 2 cents.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

I think it's pointless for bloggers to be fighting about where Obama should get his dog. Let's face it, Obama WON'T read this site. We are all animal lovers here and want him to adopt from a shelter but the reality is that he'll do whatever he wants in the end. He will please his daughters. We should be more concerned whether he will be a good president for our country which is in shambles or will he be worse than Bush. And before anyone writes something nasty about my comment, let me remind you that we are all entitled to our opinions. That's what makes us thinking individuals. I am not pro or con Obama, all I want as a concerned citizen is a good president that will make the US earn again the respect of the world instead of gaining more enemies.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Adopting is the way to go!!!

Out of all the dogs I have ever had...THE MUTT is the best!!!!

All they would need to do is walk into a Shelter and guaranteed they will leave with one! ;-)

But, if Obama and his family are set on a purebreed pup, 25% of all the dogs in shelters are purebreed's. Use www.petfinder.com or look for a local dog rescue in your area. If all else fails, only use an AKC approved breeder. These people breed the correct and humane way and are doing it for the love of the breed, not for money like so many others.

Since his daughters are so young, I would definitly go for a lab or lab mix. Or even a Golden Retreiver. These dogs are very tolerant and have the same mentality as kids so they mesh great. Either way, look for a breed that can tolerate hair and ear pulling, lots of activity, has an outgoing personality, and it highly trainable. When you finally get your pup, enroll in a training course or two, especially if you have never had a canine companion before.Training early and correctly is the key to a long term, well behaved pet.

Good Luck!!

(P.S.) Once you start with one and you have a better understanding on how to raise a pup, you can get another one so they can be buddies!! Dogs are like potato chips, you can't have just one!!

By Kelly on  Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Hopefully someone in the family besides the daughters really wants a dog. It seems like so many dogs end up in shelters because "the kids wanted one but wouldn't take care of it". Animals of any kind are a responsibility and it shouldn't be left to the kids in the family to make sure they are being well cared for. Kids can certainly be responsible pet owners but most need oversight of some kind. Pets are the greatest things in the world but they need time, attention, money, space, nourishment, etc, etc. That's a lot to expect from kids that will already be under a lot of pressure from their dad's job. Regardless of what kind of a dog he picks I hope he does the right thing and gives consideration to having a pet before taking one on. I have 4 large dogs, 16 indoor cats, 1 horse, and 2 goats. Needless to say I have little time, no money, and some really beaten down grass in my yard, but I love every one of them and wouldn't give any of them up.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Most of the comments already sent to Sen. Obama urge the use of Rescue Dogs as pets and I certainly concur. One additional suggestion occurs to me: Why not, after choosing a rescue dog, proclaiming that dog to be the "American Poster Dog", just like the Easter Seals Organization has a poster child? This would be excellent PR to show the nation that he is a regular guy with family relevance and altruism that we can all relate to.

I have had purebreeds, and adopted animals. The adopted animals have been less hassle (they seem to know that they have a better life) and have less of the genetic problems. Neither of my labs have hip dysplasia. All three of my dogs, including the deaf and blind one, is a great lover.
Adopted animals realize the choice you made to take them home.

I have and have had over the many years both purebred and adopted animals. All have been loved and very loving and I wouldn't have traded any of them for the world. With so many animals in dire need of loving homes especially after so many natural disasters over the last few years, it would certainly bode well for the Obama first family to welcome into their home and reinforce the diversity I know they understand about life in the real world !

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Buying a puppy from a reputable breeder is great for some. Adopting a pure bred dog from a rescue is great for some. I have done both, but my shelter dog is by far more socialized and happy - I think she knows she was wanted even with fleas and lyme disease and she is greatful to be in a happy place. The Obamas should do what is right for them. I absolutely think they should try a rescue first! Adoption is a very personal thing.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

It would certainly be to the Obama family's benefit, the animal's benefit, and society's benefit for their pet to be adopted. Sending a message by example is always better than lip service. Both my Ridgeback and my Weimereiner were rescues who came from shelters and the fees were completely within reason. I would hope that these parents would use the opportunity to educate their daughters about the overpopulation problems this country has with animals and allow them to decide to save a life rather than purchase one.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

The hardest part about adopting a dog from a rescue/shelter is the amount of choices. Choose one (or two or three) and not only will you get a very grateful family pet (rescues and shelter dogs seem to know if you are going to give them a forever home and will pay you back with more love than you can possibly imagine!), but you will also make it that much easier for others to choose their next family member! ADOPT! ADOPT! ADOPT! Help save a life!

Re: Help Obama Choose a CAT

Personally I have a deep aversion to dogs and I am sick and tired of seeing dogs pushed by the media while cats are losing their lives as people run each other down in their frantic search to be "trendy". Cats, not dogs, are the nation's most popular companion animal (88 million estimated, to 74 million dogs estimated, in domestic households) and they are far more beautiful, cleaner, quieter, smarter, more elegant, more powerful (size-wise), and superior in every way to dogs. So I would encourage the Obamas to adopt multiple CATS from their local shelter, making sure they are spayed/neutered. And I would also encourage them to advocate for cat adoption and for cats in general.

Hello, its up to the family to decide on a dog, getiing one from a breader or shelter, He does have young children and if this dog thing is all new to them its better to start with a puppy, so they grow up together, you don't always know the TRUE reason a pet is at the shelter!! My mom got a doberman that was fine with kids when she went to look at the dog, a week later the dog bit my niece and gave her 200 stitches in the face, she was 2, SO thats my main reason with starting with a puppy, and yes some shelters have puppies but yoy dont know the parents background on the puppy, Ok thats it, just my reasoning on the subject, And yes I love my babies. :)

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

As President of the United States, wouldn't it be fitting to have a great "all-American" dog? Most Americans are, to say the least, of mixed heritage. The dog in the White House should reflect that aspect of real Americana. Go to a shelter. Look into the dog's eyes. You'll find the right one that way. Let the dog speak to your heart. It's the only way for ANYONE to get the right dog. Besides, as the leader of a nation, you'd be setting an example for the rest of the country. And please, don't forget to neuter or spay!

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

There will never be a dog like a shelter dog! They are the most loyal of all. Obama should get a shelter dog for each of his girls. Dogs need a lot of love and companionship. I am sure the girls will give them that, as well as the dogs will give their love and devotion to the whole family.

Get you'r dog from a shelter/humane society cause there are a ton of great dogs there who need forever loving happy homes! Just make sure you treat you'r dog with all the best care in the world but even more, and give him or her all the attention and love in the world, but even more! In other words, treat you'r pet like you would want to be treated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do something great.....adopt a homeless dog and/or cat from one of your local shelters or rescues. Please DO NOT promote the senseless breeding of animals by buying from a breeder or pet shop. Think of it as a service to your country. Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Adopt from a shelter has got to be first choice for this new first family. Rescue would be second choice. For the candidate of change, I think it important that this be the first that is what is commonly called an American "mutt." Perhaps two, one for each girl would be cool, too and the dog would have a companion of his/her species as well.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

I agree that the Obama family should get several dogs...the White House is big enough, and it's a fact that caring for animals and having animal companions around does wonders to alleviate stress and foster calm and compassion in humans which will can only help make Obama's presidency more successful..,and let's face it, given the mess he's stepping into, he'll need all the stress relief and calm he can find!

Of course, I highly recommend he include at least one PUG among his adoptees...after having, knowing and caring for many different dogs, both purebred and mutts, I can unequivocably say that there is nothing quite like a pug, and your life can only be enriched by adding one to your family.

I think it's wonderful that Barrack Obama mentioned getting a dog, and it will be wonderful for all of us when he does, because it will help draw attention to the importance of animals and their treatment to our culture. Plus, unlike his opponent, he'll be able to remember he HAS a dog. :o)

I would like to recommend a few; any of the terrier breeds, they have enough love and affection to go around. A yellow retriever, they are sedantary and will cause no trouble, as the same for a goldie.
You have not seen the look of relief and joy on the face of a dog that you take home from a pound, it exilerating for you.

You actually think he'd lower himself to get a dog from a shelter? Heck-he's gotta keep up his rich image. As far as I'm concerned he won't look twice at an animal rescue. He'll want only the best for his children to keep up his high classed values which do not impress me from the start! I hope he gets a pit that bites him in the ass! But that's probably a Muslim thing too! God Bless our animals and keep Obama away from them. It will only be a big scene and a thing to make him look good. Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

I have adopted two dogs that where on their way to the SPCA, the first was a Pek mixed w/beagle and she is my protector all 22 lbs of her, she was 4wks old when the woman that had her decided that she wasn't gonna keep her, I sent my daughter to ask the woman if we could have that little ball of black fur, she is now 13 yrs old and still snuggles with me like she did as a baby. The second one is a Jack Russel mixed w/ Fox Terrier, she was 31/2 months old when her owner just didn't want to be bothered with training her. His daughter told me that he was taking her to SPCA, I called him and asked if we could have her as a companion for my Cocoa, we went straight to his home and got her, we have had both of our girls spayed and they have enhanced our lives. To adopt a pet is more then rewarding, they give you back more love just because you love them.

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Obama, I feel confident that you will do what's right. Adopt your new family member from a shelter. By doing that and having your pet spayed or neutered; you will lead by example. If your heart is big enough (and I think it is) why not make it 2 or more? You will never regret the decision. I have found that shelter animals actually seem to know that they have been given a new chance in the world. And they want nothing more than to repay the person who gives them that chance. Please let that be you and your family. You have a lot to offer and so does the abandoned animals at the shelters. I look forward to seeing your newest family members.

Mr. and Mrs. Obama, Please adopt a pet from the local animal shelter. I have worked at 2 different shelters and it is so hard to believe all the great dogs that are there. Start looking and wait till you see the one perfect for your family. They get all kinds of dogs in daily/weekly. People move and cannot take their pets with them and they bring them to the shelter. It also makes room for another pet so that would be one less dog euthanized. It would also draw attention to all the shelters if you would adopt a dog. Many other lives could be saved. PLEASE ADOPT

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

In MY OPINION, there is no such thing as a "responsible breeder", given the number of homeless animals in the U.S. and throughout the world. Anyone purposely breeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, lizards, birds, turtles, and anything else sitting in shelters and rescues is sorely mistaken if they think they are "responsible" breeders. They are responsible for one thing, though. Each puppy, kitten, whatever they sell is taking a home from a shelter animal, literally a death sentence for hundreds of thousands of homeless animals EVERY YEAR. I believe there are some very good people breeding animals, and I believe they are misguided thinking they are breeding "purebreds", which are totally different than the mutts in the shelters. BULL! They are breeding for the money - they would not be breeding and giving the litters away for the love of the breed. Need a few bucks? Have another litter! There are simply too many companion animals in this world and not enough homes. These companion animals are a dime a dozen, and that mentality has fueled the animal over-population crisis. People are breeding Pit Bulls like crazy. Have you been to a shelter lately? There's alot of good people trying to make a difference, to find good homes for as many as they can and they are fighting a battle for which there is no end. Don't contribute to the over-population of companion animals - if you're not part of the solution, believe me, you're part of the problem. I want a Red Doll-Faced Persian so bad I can taste it, but you know what, I won't buy one. I won't buy one because that kitten makes room for a new one at a breeder's house. MAKE MONEY SOME OTHER WAY - don't perpetuate the misery that exists by putting your dog and bitch together. There, I said it and I'm glad.

With cities cutting back on funds one of the hardest hit are our local animal shelters, As a volunteer at the South Central Shelter in Los Angeles, hours of operation and jobs are being cut. Animals lives are being cut even shorter. Whomever our next president is could help start the new administration off on the right foot and become more aware of animal welfare issues. And maybe we could start having no-kill shelter legislation!!!!!!

Re: Help Obama Choose a Dog

I doubt that many elitists like these people adopt from shelters or rescue, however it's a moot point re: first dog since this will NEVER be the first family--had we not been at the hands of manipulators like Dean and Pelosi, perhaps the Clintons would have found another kitty at their shelter, given that we have been robbed of that opportunity, perhaps the McCains will find room for yet another (they have LOTS) pet, and will adopt from a shelter or rescue group after he is elected
