Thanks to member Labdp for her contributions to our blog!
Two of the four dogs in this household love the water, the other two want nothing to do with it. Maddie, our English Springer Spaniel, and Decoy, my son's black lab, love playing in the water. So we went to the lake last night for some fun.
Decoy has participated in a few Dock Dog Competitions. Dock Dogs is a distance jumping competition for dogs. The plan last night was to work on training jumps. Much to our surprise the dock was about 12 inches under water due to Friday night's storm.
Maddie and Decoy will retrieve as long as you will throw. Probably longer, we wore out before they did. The ball I took for Maddie floated, but was heavy enough it didn't ride very high in the water. She looked like she was bobbing for apples out there.
I have to admire the ease with which dogs swim. I failed beginners three times and have always known there are two kinds of people in life. Swimmers and sinkers. I'm the later, not the former.
Next time we take them to the lake we plan to bring the camera. They looked so beautiful swimming side by side back to shore. One with a ball, one with a training dummy, just their heads above water. So happy, so in the moment, that we couldn't even fuss about the wet dog smell on the way home.

Re: Dock Dogs
Cute story! We have a black lab, but we've never had him in the water and always wondered if he'd like it. Our daughter has a shepherd mix who enjoys their swimming pool more than she and her husband do. He loves to snap at the water he kicks up as he swims and makes the wildest barking sounds. It sounds like he's in distress and a neighbor called and was worried that he was in pain. The vet said his swimming might add extra years to his life. He is very difficult to get out of the water and has to be watched when he's let outside because he tries to sneak in the pool when he's not supposed to. Her other dog doesn't want to have anything to do with the water and circles the pool all the time he is swimming. They both make quite an entertaining pair when we visit and we get a kick out of just sitting and watching them--much better than any tv show or movie.
