Water Safety for DogsI was watching an episode of "Petfinder" on Animal Planet recently and learned something I never knew - not all dogs immediately take to water. The dog featured in the episode accidently ran into a backyard pool and sank to the bottom. Thankfully, the host jumped right in to save him!

So when I came across this article on water safety for dogs I thought I'd share it with you - just in case you find yourself in a similar situation with a pup in need.

"There are certain things we assume dogs know by instinct. Sniffing, for instance, sometimes in embarrassing places. Barking, too, and begging for food scraps are also downloaded onto dogs’ internal computers at the factory.

Then there’s swimming. It seems so integral to being a dog that we’ve even named a stroke after them, the dog-paddle — so you’d assume that’s another thing that every dog is born knowing how to do."

Re: Water Safety

I have a French Bulldog, and their "warning labels" include information about their lack of ability to float. They are a dense little dog that can easily sink and drown when not supervised around water. Quite the opposite of the Labrador I also have.

I have a Bichon Frise and when he gets near water he tries to run away so I can never bring him to the beach with me.

Re: Water Safety

I'm so glad to find this out. My Maltese, Max jumped into our pool and I freaked. My husband said don't worry all dogs can swim. Max did swim to the top but I hava another Maltese that weighs 16 lbs and I'm afraid he 'll sink to the bottom. I will definitly keep an eye on him around the pool. Thanks for the info.

Re: Water Safety

Thanks for the info. I have 2 Shih Tzus and the boy doesn't like water but swims great and while in the water does not freak out. But the girl is scared to death of water and I was not sure how to get her into the pool. So this article is helpful.

Re: Water Safety

My pug doesn't know how to swim. Whenever I put her in the water, she lifts her little muzzle off the water (apparently she hates any face contact with water), and that throws her body off balance and makes her sink. I bought her a little life saver and now she can move around in the water with no problem, although she still rather be on dry land.

I also have a pool. I bought life jackets for my Yorkies. They only go in the pool when my hubby and I go in. I am very cautious when they want to go outside. I have some pic's in on my site.

Re: Water Safety

This is so true. Growing up I have had so many types of dogs i considered my children. God Bless their souls. My mixed miniture lab use to go swimming in our pool any chance she got. Well our other greyhound/american stafford terrier mix (don't ask how that happen) wanted to do the same but was scared so one day to took that fear head on and jumped in. All you could see was her front paws and a whole lot of splashing. and her small little head trying to stay a-float My father had to hold her under her belly to keep her from sinking. It became a weekend ritual after that.
