Pet Cemetery RemovalThis has got to be one of the saddest stories of the week -- a developer in Florida is bulldozing a pet cemetery in favor of new development and the owners have only a few more days to recover their furbabies' remains.

"Between a few run-down homes and shin-high weeds sits a pet cemetery. Many area pet owners believed this site would be their companions’ final resting place. It appears they were wrong.

Pet owners, who buried their pets at what once was called the Cape Coral Pet Cemetery, have until Friday to tell their old friends goodbye or exhume their decomposed bodies and move them."

Re: Displacing the Deceased

How horrible for the families! I just really couldn't imagine! All for someone to make a buck! How could this have happend? Did the owners of the cemetery sale the land to make a buck? If that's the case, then that is even worse! Why isn't someone helping these people relocate, if they have to move their furbabies remains! So sad! My heart goes out to these families! I hope they are able to find a new, PERMANENT, resting place for their beloved pets.

This is incredibly sad, my heart goes out to these pet owners who have to go through this pain all over again. It gets to me how apathetic and greedy people can be to the pain of others when it comes to money!

Re: Displacing the Deceased

Unfortunately in Florida, the developers have the money to get what they want. I am embarrassed to say I live here sometimes. This is a terrible situation, and I wish I knew why no one is stepping in to assist these families. I'm not sure what agency could step in, but someone in the local government should be able to find some relief for these poor people. I have not seen this story until the mention here. Has the publicity found them some help? Usually, once the press gets wind of such a terrible situation, someone reaches out a hand. I will be saying a prayer for all those involved. It's hard enough to lose a pet. Moving the remains is going to be horrible.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

It's such a terrible thing. I had it happen to me when my pet cemetary got a building built on top of it. I didn't even know that it was going to happen since I moved to a new state, and didn't even think of giving a forwarding address or name to the cemetary. It leaves me wondering what happened. Fortunately I believe that my two cats that were burried there are in Heaven, and that is a comfort. I don't like the idea that their earthly bodies were dug up and maybe mutilated and thrown away someplace. It hurts. I'll be praying for this situation. I hope someone can come up with a solution before its too late.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

It is so hard to lose your pets to begin with, to be able to accept your best buddies are not going to be at the door when you come home, or to run through your ankles just to say hi. To have made the decision to give your companion a final resting place so you can visit if you would like, or to have them join in the dog, cat or whatever park in animal heaven then to find out for the sake of making money in a downward economy that you have to face this pain all over again!! It is so unfair.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

It's always so hard to believe how insensitive and uncaring people can be.
All we have to do is listen to or read the news to know that there are many people that just do not look at our fur kids as anything then "just" a dog or cat..etc.
I hope that I can never understand how those minds work.
I feel so bad for the people that had their "family members" (and they ARE family members) buried there.
Do we hope that there is karma? I do.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

This is awful, all in the name of making a buck. How insensitive and uncaring can people be? My heart goes out to all the families. They shouldn't have to go losing their beloved family members twice.

This is a sin! It absolutely amazes me how inhuman people can be when it comes to money! It is so hard to lose a pet as it is let alone to go thru this kind of horror. My heart goes out to these families.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

This is incredibly heartless, to be sure. However, it isn't the body of the deceased pet that is important. It is the soul. And I for one have to believe that these precious souls are happy and well at the Rainbow Bridge. I believe a pet's soul lives on after death, just as the human soul does. I hope the families who are unable to retrieve the physical remains of their furkids can take comfort in that. I have from time to time felt the presence of my pets who have gone on to the Bridge. They let me know now and then that they really aren't gone. The special bond we shared is there and always will be and no greedy developer could ever take that away from me. God bless and comfort all the families.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

Until I read this I was undecided, but now I know for sure that I will have my babies cremated and will keep them with me. This has to be the worst thing for any pet parent. My prayers go out to you all.

By itaugtitawapuddytat on  Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Re: Displacing the Deceased

If they've paid a fee, or bought the plot (just like humans), then the land owner had NO right to sell the land. Those pet owners own those pets' resting places and that should be illegal....so sell land a 2nd time. They should ban together and sue the landowner/seller and developer!!!

My heart and prayers go out to these ppl and their lost pets. :'(

Re: Displacing the Deceased

I had my beloved first furbaby cremated because I knew I'd be moving around and I wanted to keep her with me; hearing about the horrible situation in Cape Coral makes me grateful for making the decision to cremate her. I cannot imagine how awful it must be for the people there who have to re-live one of the most difficult times in their lives. Unfortunately, eminent domain rulings nationwide are allowing developers to displace families, homes, and cemeteries--both human and animal--in favor of developments that will bring in higher tax dollars. I am ashamed to admit that I work for a developer (jobs here are hard to find...) and in 2006 he won the right to raze a church and its attached cemetery in order to build two food establishments. There is something very wrong when the high court rules in favor of eminent domain, especially when it forces people to face the impossible, no-win situation of displacing a loved one from what was supposed to have been their final resting place.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

It is sad to hear , me and my husband had our two black labs cremated and their ashes are on a table where ever we go they will go without having to worry about something like that happening to them, I live in SE Georgia and we do not have a pet cemetery here one of our human cemeteries has a man buried there and he has a plot next to his with his dog buried beside him I couldn't believe they let him bury his dog next to him, Our labs were 11 y/o & 13 y/o we couldn't bare to have them buried in the back yard or the vet have them cremated and tossed away , we also have a lab/white english mix and a chi that we will have the same done for them. It is fairly inexpesive to have them cremated the cremation only cost us around $150.00 with the urn , the biggest cost was the vet bills. I think it is cheaper to cremate them , human cremation is also cheaper around 1,500.00 compared to a burial @ around $15,000.00 , the families of these animals there could still have their pets cremated all that you get of the pet is bone matter anyway so if the bones are still there it can be done so that the families do not have to worry about this anymore if they were to move the remains from the cemetery to another location someone else could do the same thing , so the best thing is to have a cremation done.

Displacing the Deceased

My heart goes out to those who's furry children are buried there! I have had all of my children (as they are) cremated. It has taken away the worry about their future. I don't think I could handle the anguish and heartbreak that would go with not knowing.
I also have a kitty rescue here in Ct. And, unfortunately, we do get in kitties that are suffering and with no hope of recoving or "quality of life" have to be euthanized humanely. I know that they have all passed on and are happily playing at the Rainbow Bridge - but - I still cannot let them be "thrown away" again!! So, ALL of these children are also cremated. They have an urn here.
I do believe in Karma and it may take time - but - ............
Thank you ALL for doing what you do for the Furry Children!!

Re: Displacing the Deceased

This is a horribly sad story!! My heart goes out to all of the families involved with this awful ordeal. My baby is buried at my parents house as I had not settled on my house yet and were still in an apartment when she passed on. I considered having her cremated so that I could always have her with me, however, when I looked into having it done, all the information told me that she would be cremated in a 'batch' of other kids. I would be garenteed part of her remains were included in the ashes. I just couldnt bring myself to have it done, knowing that parts of her would be spread out to other places. I know that, regardless, my KC, and all of the displaced babies in FL, are in a better place at the Rainbow Bridge.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

They keep developing & developing & destroying. They can't sell homes now but keep building more, it all boils down to greed. I reside in Florida & people are moving out of Florida because they say they can no longer afford to live here. I see so much land being sold for new developments & the new homes sit empty for a few years, with the developments comes displacement of wildlife & then they wonder why bears are coming into residential areas, they haven't got a clue. No respect for the living or the deceased animals. It's shameful!

That is horrible.I have had my pets cremated and they remain in my home with me, so no one can ever do this to my animal family.

So sorry to read that!

By Starr_Bright on  Thursday, June 19, 2008

Re: Displacing the Deceased

That shouldn't be legal. Can you imagine knowing that your pet is being bulldozed, or having your only other option digging him up and looking at him in a decomposed state?! AWFUL!

I'm not into burial, anyway. I hate the idea of decomposing or someone I love decomposing. Cremation is at least quick, sanitary and you can keep them near you, even if you move.

I still have my last dog's ashes. Every once in awhile my husband comes across the box and says, "This is a really nice box. What's in it?" and I say, "Fluffy." He gets a weird look on his face and quickly puts it down. But he always forgets and does it again a couple years later.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

How horrible. I would be very upset if I was them. Now the owners have to grieve all over again for the loved ones. It is as if they had asked them to dig up their own family member and move them. I think that is very cold hearted of the developer. Why do they feel the need to build more homes? Isn't there enough of them for sale and in foreclosure?

Re: Displacing the Deceased

Having moved to a farm in TN from S. Florida and being a Miami native, this story does not surprise me. It makes me sick! When one of our animals crosses the Bridge they are buried here now. Even our equines. They will never leave the farm unless it is to an approved, loving home. Period!

Re: Displacing the Deceased

The cemetary owners are committing a despicable act! This is an outrage! Who's burial ground is next? We have some very lovely cemetaries in my city. My father is buried in one of them, with an awe inspiring view of the mountains. What keeps the mortuary there from selling that property to developers? MORAL FIBER??? RESPECT FOR THE DECEASED??? And would the law even allow it?

By LukeLloydsmom on  Friday, June 20, 2008

Re: Displacing the Deceased

That is horrible, I have never heard of such a thing before. We have Pet cemetaries where I live and families who have placed their love ones are so grateful for having a final resting place for their fur babies. I had to put my little buddy down in Nov. 2005 and he was my everything. I did not want to have to go through losing him over again should I move or should something like this happen so I had him cremated and his ashes sit on my mantel in the living room so if I should move or relocate to another state he will be going with me. My thoughts and Prayers are with the families of these furbabies who have to relive losing the babies a second time. It is a shame money out weighs the love and respect for the deceased, remember this what comes around goes around and those who do that to these families will get theirs in the end.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

That is just horrible. I have never buried a pet at a cemetery but my grandparents have. I recently lost my 15 year old cat to old age and my 8 year old dog to a brain tumor. I plan on moving out of state in a year so I had my babies cremated because I could not stand having left them here. They were both cremated and then I brought them back home with me. Some people think that is morbid but to me it is a way of still having them with me. When it is my time, I will be cremated also and their ashes will be mixed with mine and scattered on the pacific beach. After reading this article, I do not think that I will ever have any of my pets buried at a pet cemetery, I will just continue to have mine cremated.

I am just appauled, and disgusted with these people and what the almighty dollar means to people these days.My heart and soul goes out to all of you. I lost my 17 year old shephard four years ago, last week, named GLACIER. He was my life,my everything. My husband and I decided to have him cremated,so things like this couldn't happen.I'm glad we did.Now we have him with us all the time.We light a candle for him every day in remembrance of him.It helps us to deal with losing him. And yes,I still feel him beside me all the time.God I still love and miss him ,so much.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

Is there any update on this since the original posting? As usual, the thinking seems to be "they're only animals." Would anyone ever seriously consider bulldozing over a HUMAN cemetery? What about the rights of the people who purchased plots for the loved ones? I'm appalled . . .

There has to be some legality issues! There are many animal lawyers who would aid these sad families. I hope and pray they are able to make peace with this tragedy.

Re: Displacing the Deceased

I would turn the cemetery in. I am not sure if there is any paper work that is created at the time of burial, if there was I would look into it, perhaps there is a way that the families can be paid back. I know it does not take the place of having the comfort knowing your furbabies will be at peace. I had my precious Fluffy cremated, I couldn't stand the thought of not being around, after hearing this I am glad I made that decision. My thoughts go out to those families that were involved, I could not imagine. I would completely protest the building that was going up. Whether it be a shop, restaurant, whatnot I would never place a foot in there, and I would notify all family and friends to do the same.

I cannot imagine how these pet owners must feel!!! My heart goes out to them! I had my "baby" cremated, he was almost 19, his name...KoKo & he was an orange tabby, just a stray we took in when I was a kid. I think that I will have him buried with me when I pass, I hope this act will allow him final rest!

Re: Displacing the Deceased

I've always suspected this kind of heartbreak possible were I to bury my pets. My decision was to have them cremated-they're in lovely little containers now that I can see in my home-where they'll remain until I pass. Then I'll be cremated and we'll all be buried together! As heaven is intended to be !!
