Adopting a DogOr a few final instructions.

Tomorrow, we have a special visitor coming to see Pete.  A prospective adopter is flying in to meet him.  He will be freshly bathed, nails clipped and hopefully ready to have his first meet with his forever owners.
I'd like to mention a few things to Pete to make it go well.  First of all, a cold nose in an unwanted place may appear a bit too forward.  Secondly, try to remember some of your manners.  I understand there is a bit of a spaz under the liver and white coat, so do your best.  I don't expect you to be perfect, but give it your best shot.  That said, show them the true Pete you are.  If you behave too well, it may be a shock for them to see what a Pete you can be under normal circumstances.

Remember that you are loved, and totally lovable.  You had the worst of homes prior to rescue, and a taste of what a good home can be like.  Quite possibly it's time for the God's of Adoption to smile on you and the door to your forever home to open.

If you are adopted this weekend there will be lots of changes in your life.  They will include flying to a new city, adjusting to live in the big city and all that entails.  I am trusting you will encounter all of that with your usually curious "WhatChaDoing, WhereAreWeGoing, CanISeeIt" attitude.  Some of it may be more bizarre that the peacock call you heard in our front room.  But if a gentle loving hand is on your leash all will be well.  Show the older dogs you meet a degree of respect.  Especially if they are female.  An old female is still a bitch and always will be.

You have come so far.  Remember the stairs that looked like Mt. Everest?  Remember barking at yourself in the mirror?  Remember the joy of racing through the house with socks (or the Victoria's Secret bra)?  Remember savoring (or maybe that was inhaling) your first Liver Treat, OMG Liver Treats!!

Be yourself and you will do us proud.  Know I love you, that if you go I will miss you....and thanks for all the laughs.

Re: Best Behavior????

Being a foster mom myself, I know the difficulty of letting go. However, I have to say that your advice to Pete is some of the best and most loving I've ever heard. If this is Pete's time to go to his forever home, it will happen and he will begin what will be a long and fulfilling life in a place that is his from now on. If it's not his time, I have no doubt that eventually it will be -- when the right family is open to him. And whenever that happens, he will have a strong foundation to build on having already experienced the love in your household. I think that dogs, once given a taste of true love, will remember that over all the other bad experiences they may have had. And they will carry the capacity to return that love to their new home and their new family. When I think back to foster dogs that have moved on from my home, I always remember them fondly (even their less than perfect behaviors) and know that I've given them a chance to find the true happiness and love they deserve. The pain of losing them fades over time, but my loving memories of them and the memories of the love they brought to my house remain forever. So, my thoughts go out to you in what will probably be a difficult time (especially since Pete just learned cartwheels!), and to Pete in what will hopefully be just the beginning of a life well-deserved -- and hopefully filled with Liver Treats, OMG Liver Treats! You made that possible for him.

Aww Pete looks like such a loveable little baby. You made me cry reading this letter to him. I am sure if someone if flying out to meet him they are willing to give him lots of love...I wish the best for Pete and lots of love.

Re: Best Behavior????

I have really enjoyed getting to know Pete through your blogs. I hope he finds his forever home. You have been a wonderful and loving foster parent and he was lucky to learn from you that he deserves love and will take that to his forever home. Dogs need people like you!!! Keep up the good work.

Re: Best Behavior????

Good luck Pete! I hope you find your forever home where someone will love you for who you are for the rest of your life. I wish you the happiness that you deserve!

I too, was a foster parent several years ago. I took in an older Lab mix from the shelter that nobody wanted. She was a lovely girl and I adopted her six months later. Six months after that, she passed away and I cried as though I had her for her whole life. I'll never regret taking her in and giving her the love she deserved, even though it was for a short time.

Re: Best Behavior????

Being a foster mom can be heartbreaking when they go to their furever homes, but sooo joyful when they find their perfect family. I have 6 liver and white furkids here - 5 of my own and one foster. There is nothing like the joy and laughter that pointers bring to your life and nothing like the feelings that saving one gives you. Good luck Pete and know that you are loved for who you are.
