| May 16 Written by:aajoanne Friday, May 16, 2008 I didn't think he was breathing as he lay helpless and motionless on the side of the road. We were not driving in a safe part of downtown and as I turned my head slightly to the side I saw a large pack of kids coming towards the lifeless white cat, carrying large poles and sticks. I was horrified. My friend and I grabbed the cat from the edge of the road and drove off. The poor cat was limp, but I felt him let out a large sigh as I plopped him into my lap. He was so covered with fleas, bugs and dirt that you could hardly tell he was a solid white feline. Every bone prominently stuck out of his body and his eyes stayed forward, never flinching as I began petting him. We took him immediately to the vet. He was so patient and tolerant as they poked and prodded and hooked him up to fluids. Despite his meek condition, he was a fighter. Despite the terrible past he must have endured, he craved a chance at a real life.
We named him Snowflake, for the beautiful white fur that was contained underneath the filth of his past. The vet didn't have a positive diagnosis to give but we gave him the chance to be comfortable and know he was loved and cared for during his final days on earth. Despite his condition, he purred. He stood on his own and even walked across the room to stand next to me. His eyes moved back and forth as he watched me talk. He was only with us for 9 short days, but the beauty of it all is that he finished his life knowing that humans can be kind. Although it was for a very short period of time, he experienced the greatness of love. He experienced what it was like to have food, water, shelter and comfort. These basic things in life that we all take for granted, he had never known.
Snowflake's can happen anywhere, anytime. A living creature does not have to be on their death bed in order to need another's help. All living beings have basic needs- food, water, shelter and love. Many of us take these basic necessities for granted. Many of us wrongly assume that someone else will help the less fortunate, that someone else will carry the burden. The fact is that most of us are so consumed with our own lives that we can't see when another desperately needs our help. Snowflake's story can teach us all a lesson. He can teach us all that under the dirt and filth that the world may have dumped on us, there lays a sincere living being. Appearances don't always describe the quality of the creature. With a little love and a little help, even those who have had a dark past can blossom into beautiful lives. If we all take the time to help our fellow beings, we will achieve more greatness and happiness on this earth than has ever been imagined.
Snowflakes come in all forms, all shapes and all sizes. They may fall in front of you any day, any time at any place. Sometimes they may lay motionless along side of the road, other times they may be brushing past you on the sidewalk. It's time for our blinders to come off, to allow ourselves to open our arms and embrace those who need us most. All snowflakes were meant to be beautiful and to have a chance at life. In loving Memory of Snowflake and countless other pets who strive to know a good life-- to know they were loved. All pets deserve to have loving, caring owners- and a warm comfortable place to sleep, regular food and water... All living creatures deserve a chance at life. Please remember to have your pets spayed/neutered and do your part to help the animals. Tags: 31 comments so far...

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
That's so sad. I have a stray cat that i take care of. My step-mother doesn't like it but i want him to know he's loved. I don't think he's had a good past, even today he has his problems. He's had such a hard life that he's afraid of other people and other animals. He's such a nice cat I want him to know that people care and love him.

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
You are a very special person and I was so touched by your story. I took in 3 stray kittens approximately 3 weeks old. I bottle fed them and the vet said they were very lucky to be alive. today is their first birthday. They are beautiful, flourishing and full of love and compassion. I can only say thank you for being the person you and your friend are.

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
God surely blessedyou. I am sitting here crying. I have saved many dogs & cats over the years. At one time we had 15 dogs & puppies that I had found that were thrown out like trash. I like to be able to show these creatures(people) what that feels like. Bless you .

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
Your story of Snowflake is beautiful and tragic at the same time. I currently have two shelter cats (a year old and litter mates), and continue to adopt shelter cats as I have been doing for over 20 years now. I also adopt strays that seem to stay; have had as many as 5 cats in our family. They're beautiful animals and unfortunately taken for granted and abused by others with no feelings. Your kindness will be repaid many times over.

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
You were very fortunate to have an opportunity to spend some time with Snowflake. Kritters can teach us so much. Even in Snowflake's final days you had a chance to care for and love a furperson who returned that concern many times over. I wish there were many more humans that felt the way you do.

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
This is a very sad story that could have been much worse. At least Snowflake knew love and compassion and that he was not alone in the end- no matter how bad his life may have been up to that point. There are some terrible people in this world but then there are many wonderful compassionate people who strive to make a difference. This is how I can handle hearing stories like this.

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
People like you are what makes life worth living for people and animals. Whenever I come across an animal in need, I always wonder in the back of my mind, if perhaps they aren't angels sent here to test us; see what our souls are made of. You just never know. Animals are certainly the innocents of this world and deserve our care and attention. Helping out animals like Snowflake (RIP, little one), always makes us a better person than we were before.

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
We rescued a small kitten, only about 4 to 6 weeks old, from out of the middle of a country road. He had crawled out for warmth as it was a beautiful summer day and the blacktop was warm. He was very sick - fleas, caked food all over his fur, skin and bones. Also, had a hole from a warble and worms crawling all over him. He or she, only lived for 2 days but at least he knew that someone cared enough to try and save him. We brought him home, put him in a blox with a big fluffy towel and a hot pad, fed him with a dropper, but unfortunately, he left us. We would have kept him and put him in with the rest of our kaboodle had he lived. He was very tolerant of all the combing and washing him off, even meowed at me on the day he passed away as if to say "thanks for trying".

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
That was such a touching story. I would have done the same thing as you. I wish there were many others in this world that would do the same too. It's sad that Snowflake couldn't be with you longer but at least he wasn't alone and I am sure he will be forever grateful & watch over you from that better place he moved onto. I too took in a very hurt 4 mth old kitten that was hurt when her previous owner started the lawnmower when she was sleeping under it. Myself & another Vet tech drove to this house to pick her up & bring her back to give her help & xrays. The owner wanted to have her put to sleep & didn't want to get xrays or anything! I was so upset (I worked at the Vet hospital at the time). I went in to say goodbye to her & her little tail was moving back & forth which let me know that even though the amount of pain she was in she still wanted a second chance, she wasn't ready to go yet. I took her home with her broken jaw that was wired, a cast on her front leg, stitched pad on her paw, and her tongue was stitched because it was almost completly severed. I bottle fed her & made sure she was comfortable for the next couple of weeks. 7 years later, Lucky is happy & healthy with many more years ahead! It feels good to share these memories with other caring people. Thanks again for your beautiful story!

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
I am firmly convinced that there is a special place in Heaven for all animal lovers who go the extra mile to rescue, love and care for the furry creatures who are in need. I also believe there is a special place in Hell for those who abuse and neglect any defenseless animal! God Bless those who show love, compassion and kindness to animals!

Thank you for your love and compassion. Over many years of animal rescues, I have witnessed unspeakable horrors. I am so glad that you showed Snowflake that there are some beautiful humans in the world after all, and that at last he could know the same unconditional love that he was willing to give. God bless you.

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
I respect cat lovers and your story brought tears for snowflake and admiration for you to give her a wonderful home and all the love you could before she had to leave. I have owned and loved two special kittys, but must admit I am a dog person, it reminded me of a time when I found a very small puppy (shepard) under the porch of a duplex that had been abandoned when the people moved. I took her in and found she was covered in ticks, my friend and I took turns removing the ticks the best we could to get them completely out of her little body. We took her to the vet and he finished getting her back healthy as he could. She was beautiful and I named her "Gypsy". She was only with me for 6 months before the tick infection caused her to become ill and loose all her hair. She never stopped playing until the end. I have wonderful photos and a special place in my heart for her always. Thanks again for sharing Snowflake's story and it is sad that all beings on this planet cannot have such compassion. I love this website and the comments really show how great the peeple are that have joined it.

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
Your story brought tears to my eyes, not just for SnowFlake ,but for you also. You have a gift that so few people have, you can give love and strength to fallen animals. IYou can feel their pain and want only to comfort them and give them the dignity they deserve.. I believe as you do that all living creatures deserve love, food and shelter. Sadly most people won't get involved. Like you I have rescued and given love to fallen anumals that did not survive. Those animals had only love in their eyes as they passed. Please keep writing your story and Thank you for showing Snow Flake such love!!!

Snowflake's story is tragic yet beautiful. Thank you for making his final days peaceful after his terrible ordeal in life. I have rescued many cats also, many of who met with similar fates. But at least they knew what it was to be loved -- there needs to be many more people in the world like you!

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
If anyone deserves a crown and a place in Heaven, it is you and your friend. People who abuse innocent animals have no consience or reguard for animals or humans,or for themselves for that matter. I don't know how they can live with themselves or even sleep at all. To abuse a helpless animal is cruel and evil. God put every living creature on earth for a purpose. He has a plan for each and every critter.Even us human critters!!!! ....I believe what goes around comes around and there will always be "Snowflakes" Anytime of the Year. God Bless you for your love of animals.!! Perhaps God will some how intervein some day and not allow what he created to be destroyed by heartless people.....They should get the same treatment as their abuse and cruelty that they have inflicted on innocents.

Re: Snowflakes Anytime of the Year
I also rescue animals. My best friend found a kitten on the side of the road not moving. She scooped it up and called me over to take a look at it. I picked it up and it was full of maggots. I called an emergency vet to see what to do so we followed her advice. We shaved off her hair to find the wound. Then I put her under the water to wash the wound and get the maggots off. The following morning I brought her to my vet. The maggots were eating her alive. She underwent surgery to remove the dead tissue and put her on antibiotics. We didn't know if she would live through the day. She was blind and deaf from the toxins of the maggots. She was in the hospital for a week. We went to see her everyday. The day finally came for us to bring her home. She lived for 3 more weeks. We were told by our friends at the vet's office that she was brought to us so we could show her kindness and love for her final days on earth.

God bless people like you!! A beautiful heartwrenching story. I adopted a pregnant stray she had 5 babies in my house along with the 3 cats I already had. That's a lot of cats! But I found great homes for mama and 4 babies; now we have 4 cats.
