Driving with PetsThis is one California law I can agree with - it may soon be illegal and cost you a $35 fine to drive with a pet on your lap.

I'm all for keeping pets close by, but when we stopped for gas just north of Santa Barbara recently, I counted four Chihuahuas sitting on or around one driver - two perched comfortably behnd her neck while she struggled to remain upright!

Is this a California phenomenon or is it as out of control in other parts of the country?

Re: Don't Drive While Snuggling

I agree that for the safety of our pets and others on the road, having our pets snuggle while driving could be hasardous. I actually tried it once, going a short distance and decided it was not safe at all.

Guilty! I'm going to buy two pet seats. I have experienced my Sugar crawling into my lap while driving, it's a major destraction. Not a good idea at all. Once was enough for me.

Re: Don't Drive While Snuggling

I remember when our dog, Skylar, was a puppy. My husband let her stay in the passenger's seat when nobody else was sitting there, but often she scrambled over to his lap. It took a lot of work to get her to stay in the backseat after that experience. I guess she liked being a driver. Anyhow, in the time she was allowed in the front of the car, she learned how to roll down windows and even turn on the air conditioning by stepping on controls. Just another reason not to have pets snuggle while driving...

Guilty! I have also had my dog jump into my lap while driving. I bought a dog seat belt at WalMart. She doesn't like it as much as riding in my lap but I feel that we are both safer with her belted in. I would like to also buy a dog car seat to put in the backseat so she could look out.
