<enter_an_alt_tag_message>I once read to write about what you know, so for me, it must be dogs. They are just the best part of my life, well besides my sweetheart, wine, chocolate, my kids, flowers, and cheese (in no specific order).

People who aren't animal lovers don't get it, and I find that sad. I don't mind the fur, the wet noses, the balls on the stairs. I've learned to look at the steps first to see if a ball or bone may have gotten left on them. I hold both the hand rail, and the other side of the wall when going down the stairs. It's not unusual for a stampede to occur while on the stairway. A good grip is a must. If they trail my every footstep it just goes with the territory. If they need to go out in the morning before I'd really like to be up, so be it. I may not like it, I may walk on sleepy feet to the door. I may have my jammies on under the coat, but out they must go.

I know my neighbors may call me the crazy dog lady. I have no problem with that. If pet's make us "crazy" people then I'd like a double dose.

I've adapted so well to living in a dog driven household. I can toss a tennis ball while catching a power nap and never miss a beat. I can identify each dog's "pile" in the yard, although I'm not sure it's something to mention in mixed company. I know which barks from outside are due to squirrels and rabbits, and which ones mean a stranger is in the area. I know that sliced cucumbers are like manna from the heavens to my dogs. So cucumbers do not follow the 'no table foods' rule.

So if you should look up and see balls on the stairs, more leashes than coats on the coat rack, dog toys instead of fine art (except for some dog related art), then welcome to the dog house.

Sign me, Owned by dogs, loved by dogs, loving 'em back with all my heart.

Re: Balls on the Stairs

As the proud mom of a rambunctious pug who has a love affair with wiffle balls, I too have learned the fine art of finessing my way around a room littered with his multi-colored obsessions, as well as the skill to walk being ever mindful that in a spilt second and from out of nowhere my little man can and will run me down on his way to his favorite ball of the moment.

I'll take a double dose of crazy for being so passionate about dogs. Some people don't understand and that is very sad. There is nothing in the world better than unconditional love and that is something we can't get from eachother. Only our dogs give it even when we don't deserve it.

Re: Balls on the Stairs

I absolutely adore my dog's, and my cat, I also do not mind the toys and balls strewn all over the house. You learn to always watch your step. The fur is commonplace, you clean it up and it's back moments later. They hang around your feet so you always have shadows, and you learn to navigate around them. They wake you up too early on Saturdays and occasionally you get your tummy pounced on in the middle of a power nap because they are eager to play. It's all part of being an animal parent and lover. I have been told by people who are not animal lovers that they could not tolerate the fur, and I have been accused on 1 or 2 occassions that I love animals more then people. Well, that's just not true. I see no reason why I cannot love both, there is room in my heart. I have children and grandchildren and they do not seem to feel unloved due to my love for all critters. It is a shame that some people are missing out on the joy of loving an animal, as well as the joy of the unconditional love and adoration you can only get from our ever faithful furry companions. As for me, I only wish I had a few more furballs around here. I am sure I will eventually.

Re: Balls on the Stairs

I can certainly understand the whole tennis ball addiction thing, but I've long since adopted a very strict policy of "no tennis balls in the house!" I have a hard enough time walking as it is, thanks to my disability, and I certainly can't afford to have such things rolling around underfoot first thing in the morning; I don't need any early-morning trips to Emergency, thanks very much!

I also know the different barks and noises; for other animals, Tas doesn't bark so much as he makes a "row, row, row," sound, almost like he's trying to sing, "Row Your Boat," while for any humans approaching our back yard too closely, he erupts in a full-throated, fast-paced barking! It's always very easy for me to tell one from the other. It's not that he's aggressive, so much as that, being half German Shepherd, he's rather territorial when it comes to our back yard.

We share the back yard with a couple of neighbours (we live in an apartment house, so there are three other units with access to the yard) and they've long since learned how to handle Tas when he does into his "strangers in the yard," good judgement and keep my doors locked and keep my burglar alarm system on the "instant" setting!

Re: Balls on the Stairs

You're exactly right, people who aren't animal lovers just don't get it. It seems I have a daily stampede down my stairs each day also-- I can relate! I can not imagine coming home without my pets to greet me-- it's something I always look forward to. No matter what kind of day I've had- when they all come running to the front door to greet me before I can even get it open-- it always puts a smile on my face.
