Last night, Charlie came home from the war. No, he's not a soldier fighting bravely but rather a Border collie who provided companionship to a military unit serving in Iraq, including Sgt. Watson who led to charge to make sure Charlie wasn't left in Baghdad.

The first pup to be transported to the U.S. as part of the SPCA's Operation Baghdad Pups, Charlie was exhausted, but happy to be in his new home. While Sgt. Watson's tour isn't over until March, Charlie will head to Phoenix to stay with Watson's family until they can be reunited.

Re: Operation Baghdad Pups - What happened to Cinnamin ?

This story about Charlie is so "heart warming". I am wondering what ever happened to the other beautiful dog with the sweet face in the video named Cinnamin. The only comments are that they tried to bring her here; but she was lost in transit. Did they ever find her ? What happened?

Awwww what an amazing story!!!!! Lucky for Charlie there are so many dog loving soldiers in the Middle East. Ive read many a story about some of the dogs over there, its just very touching to know they want to bring them home and give them a forever home.

It's so nice that people aren't forgetting that the animals are affected by the war, too. This is a great story!!! Thanks for publishing it!!!

Re: Operation Baghdad Pups

It's good to see that some people are looking out for these true innocents, many of whom would otherwise be left to die of abuse, neglect and starvation. It's sad but true; dogs are among the most despised and least cared-for animals in that part of the world because they're considered "ritually unclean" by Islam, in much the same way that pigs are unclean to Jewish people. While we can't force our beliefs and way of life on the people, the least we can do is try to save these innocents from the ravages of war, and give them decent lives here in the West. More power to ANYBODY who rescues animals, and especially anyone who goes the distance to get such a precious life out of harm's way! Best of luck to Charlie, and I sincerely hope and pray that his buddy gets home safe and sound too. I had a working-stock Border Collie for many years, so I can tell you that there's no finer four-legged friend than a good Border Collie/mix...smart, loyal and full to overflowing with love, fun and friendship.

Re: Operation Baghdad Pups

Yes! This is a great story!

I’m owned by one of the Lebanon Dogs that Best Friends brought out of Beirut during the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. I also volunteered with the “Lebanon Dogs” for several months. Dogs that come out of war zones are intelligent survivors and still very capable of being loving pets! Vega, Champ, Vodka, Mr. Hope and Flower are a few of these wonderful, intelligent animals that had not yet found homes when I left Best Friends in November. I’d recommend any of them for the right family. They certainly are worth considering for anyone wanting to give a life-long home to a fabulously furry refugee.

Re: Operation Baghdad Pups

I think they finally found the other dog Cinnamon. She wound up coming home like 2 months later. I saw the story on another website. There's a book about it and everything. 44 Days Out of Kandahar. Looks like a good read. It's so great what these soldiers are doing for these animals that bring them love while they are out sacrificing their lives....and what the dogs are doing for the soldiers. Nice to have feel good stories around now and again.. Should have more of 'em.

Re: Operation Baghdad Pups

Just wanted to thank yall for the nice comments. We are so glad to have Charlie back in the states. He is doing great and we are looking forward to seeing him again when we get back. To the questions about 'Cinnamon' sissyluvsdogs hit it on the head. She did make it home safe and sound and that is the name of the book. Cinnamon and her owner Mark Feffer as well as his sister who actually wrote the book '44 Days Out of Kandahar' were at Dulles Intl. Airport to meet and greet Charlie on his arrival home. Apparently Charlie was interested and friendly but Cinnamon was not interested in him! hahah If yall want to know more, visit http://baghdadpups.com which is the SPCAs program to help get other dogs home. If you google 'charlie dog iraq' and look for the Washington Post article you can go there and they ahve a few good pictures including one of Charlie and Cinnamon.

Re: Operation Baghdad Pups

Wonderful story, I am so glad it was shared. Sounds like Charlies dad was where he needed to be at just the right time. I will say prayers for his safe return home to join his best buddy. Sometimes in the darkest places, our furr family members can remind us what true humanity is.

In response to luvscats, Cinnamon did make it home to the U.S. after 44 days. Check out Baghdadpups.com for more info on the book chronicling her story. 44 Days Out of Kandahar. Click on the link that says "Learn more about the book" and it will also lead you to a You Tube video of her. She' so beautiful and loveable.
